What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Just got my 4Runner back from RSG Offroad for a new steering rack, but I also had a panhard bar correction kit welded on. Holy ****, that PCK might be the single biggest improvement I've made to the vehicle. After the lift, if I hit a bump or pothole the back end would jump and dance around due to the angle of the panhard bar. Sometimes, if I was going fast enough it felt like the back end was going skip sideways and cause me to lose control, especially on one expansion joint on a bridge on my way home from work. On my drive home from the shop with my panhard bar now parallel to the ground, this thing just floated over bumps and potholes on I-70 and I-25 at 75mph. Back end felt planted again and I didn't feel like I was going to die from the back end kicking out. If you have a 4Runner that's lifted, I cannot stress enough that you should add one of these to your rear suspension.

Nice! Curious how much of a lift you have on yours? I have a 3" lift on mine (Sonoran Steel), and it has a little bit of a wiggle going over a whomp at speed, but it's not all that bad. Is yours lifted more than 3?

I ordered some Tundra calipers from my favorite wrecking yard.

I'd have to check what springs I have, but they're OME and after the bumper/spare/fuel can it probably settled around 3". Mine was downright scary over bumps at highway speeds. Now it's smooth as can be.

Replaced my CV axle seal; I'll need to replace the CV axles too (both) as the boots are torn but that's for another day.

Changed the front diff oil. I'm not sure if it had ever been done before but it didn't look too bad on the way out so it must have been done at some point. More than 10 years ago most likely. I don't remember ever doing it, frankly.

The fill bolt was very loose but it was a little hard to crack the drain bolt loose. I hit it with PB for a few days and took a torch to it today. And after beating on the 1/2" socket wrench with a mallet and using a creative bottle jack angle to add some force to the wrench I was finally able to crack it without stripping the bolt's hex socket.

For the refill I used the Lucas 75W-90 since that's what was on the shelf at my local AutoZone and looked like the best deal for a daily driver. They had the Royal Purple too, but it was about twice the price, if I recall. I can't imagine that I'd see much of a benefit from Royal Purple during my 13,000 miles of twice-a-week commuting each year.

Next on the list are the oil for the transfer case in a few weeks, change the engine oil, and add some new tires next month or in October and I should be all set for the winter.

I'm pretty sure it needs a rear main seal too but I don't think that's anything that's urgent. It's putting a couple of drops of oil on the ground a day -- an annoyance more than anything.

Onward to 300K!

It's more likely a valve cover gasket leak that's dripping down, that's a FAR more common occurrence. Mine looked EXACTLY like a rear main seal.

My dad finally brought over his Fixer-upper 97 5-speed 4WD SR5. He is helping out a friend that can no longer keep it so we can get a decent resale on it.

Yesterday I cleaned up and painted the replacement junk yard 3rd member and installed the new (junk yard) brake booster. ( I haven't tested the booster yet as it was too late to start the Yota without a Cat lol)

Today i plan to install the "new" 3rd member and replace the side view mirror.

Major issues still to fix:
  • Cat was stolen - any one in the Phoenix area have an extra Cat? We wont pay OEM prices, but will pay something fair. :)
  • Interior needs a good detail job, luckily just a dirty interior and not a smoker's interior.

minor issues still to fix:
  • Windshield sprayer lines are cut
  • interior hood release tab is broken
  • I am sure there will be more little thing as I look around more

Possible, I guess. But I just had the VCGs done in January so I doubt they would have gone kaput so soon. The interesting thing about this one is that it's so little. A couple drops here and there. Enough to know that I have a leak but not enough to get all worked up about. I'm tempted to just let it go but the OCD in me keeps telling me that no leak is acceptable. And the OCD always wins. :noidea:

I was having a few drops every day or two even after doing valve covers. For me it was cam plugs. YMMV and best of luck!

Lots of ways to mess up doing a valve cover job... like not doing the cam plugs (or seals on the front), failing to put FIPG in the right places, or simply having those pesky cover bolts working their way loose.

My point was that main seals aren't common enough that I can remember seeing anyone talk about them in the couple years I've been here. It's certainly small potatoes to the valve cover gaskets... so, Occams Razor and all, your leak is most likely from the top. If it's not enough to bother you, then Great!! I have the same situation with my wifes '66 bug (needs a fairly major overhaul to fix the dozen drops a week it likes to deposit, not worth the money or effort... yet), we all get to pick our level of tolerance.

monday afternoon and yesterday:
denso radiator and flush, distilled water and asian red fluid
upper and lower hoses
fuel filter
oil change
trans filter, flush and add a magnafine
clean up wires to block and trans pan heaters
diffs and tc/oil changes ...everything is synthetic now

need to take a few days off for a building project then
hopefully this weekend get to LBJ's, OTRE, taco whip, and a full tune up ( plugs, wires, clean maf and throttle body, pcv and replace drive belts) and see if I can get back up camera working that the previous owner installed since I have to pull radio for taco whip ( electric one is dead and broken off mast)

then I need to get my trailer hitch back on, have not figured out how im gonna get to the ones nearest the rear diff...how to get the nuts on the bolts....nearest bumper are weilded inside frame, those front ones are not....strange

monday got a remote start installed ( very helpful up here)

then I should be ready for winter ( well in a month or so get my snow tires on as snow usually starts around october)

on my 97 the sunroof/map lights wire plug just plugged right in to my connector, I think the 99+ has a different connector, see if you can snag a 96-98 connector at a junk yard.

I had issues figuring out the female connector for the outside air temp sensor, but found a small number on the sensor male connector and it help me track down the corresponding female connector.

I replaced my steering rack bushings today with the Energy Suspension Kit which made my steering much more responsive which was amazing. While I was under there I greased all the zerk fittings from the axle shaft which will make me sleep at night good (first time greased in 10+ years). Inspecting both lower ball joints while I was under there, I found the right joint leaking grease out the boot which made me realize I need to replace at least the right side ASAP. Other than that it's been a great day :)

Today I 3D printed a threaded oil funnel. I am not sure how I have functioned without this prior to today.

Handy funnel! That threaded portion of the funnel helps oil pouring out of the valve cover when pouring in the oil in a rush.
Yah, I'm impatient.

today. one of my contractors could not show up. so I did a tune up instead.
new ngk wires, ngk plugs, new Denso coils ( preventative) pulled the throttle body and cleaned, removed ICV and cleaned it all out. replaced the throttle body gasket with the big O one ( dont know if that really does anything), pcv valve and grommet and did the ISR delete., I just like the clean look without that big box sitting there....dont know if it really helps...Adjusted the cables., they were pretty loose.

the plugs were so worn out ( bosch platinums) and no idea on the age of them, and one was in only hand tight, and that kind of worried me, but new one torqued in just fine. the wires were original and had a 2000 date on them. Compression test was right on the money for what id expect at 223k. 190-210
rig idles much better now and back up to normal idle....was idling real low with an occasional hickup.
stethoscope shows I have one noisy injector, compared to others I could get to.
was gonna replace drive belts, but they all look real good.
