What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Today I learned how close I was to dancin' with the devil with the LBJs I had on my 4runner. They were very loose and had a lot of play. I have only replaced one side so far. Have OE Toyota ones I'm putting on.

I can't post a new thread and need some help. I have a 1999 Sr5 that the wipers don't work. They work when you spray the windshield for bugs, but the switch for intermittent doesn't do anything.

Seems like either a relay or a switch issue. I found the thread on replacing the relay on the 4th gens, assumed this would work but can't get the steering colum apart. I have the screw on the bottom and the two that you have to turn the wheel to get to. But it still feels like something is holding it together.

Any help or pointing me in the right direction would be awesome.

Brute1100, try looking at the fuse in the panel to the left of the steering wheel (inside the cab). There is a fuse on the lower left for wipers. I would check that out first.

Upgraded my cb. Picked up this bearcat 880 at the pawn shop for $60. Really nice unit. Can change display colors. I really wanted a unit with a built in swr meter. Took some trimming and had to order a 90 rf adapter to get it to fit in there, but I like it

More LED work...

I took some time tonight to upgrade the center stack bulbs to white LEDs.

A few issues: It seems the climate control bulbs have burned the plastic cover a bit, because the places where the light shines through closest to the bulb show a bit of a yellow tint. Also, the A/C button has a green tint to it, even though I am using a white LED bulb - it must be a film/backing on the button. I broke the cigarette lighter ring bulb and got all the pieces out (as noted in the LED table) but couldn't get a #74 LED to fit in its place (too long). I also couldn't figure out how to remove the ash tray bulb - it twists but doesn't come out. That'll stay green for the time being. I'll have to see if the green clock bothers me enough to order a gel swatch set to convert the color.

Up next is a preventative radiator change sometime soon (15 years and 116,000 miles on it). Is the Koyo a1998 still the way to go? I can only seem to find it on sites I'm not familiar with, like go-parts.com and frsport.com.

Finished my Big 3 upgrade along with adding a blue sea fuse box. Redid all my auxiliary wiring, and added my rear lights to my WMW rack. That wiring harness was a pain to make and run. 25 feet long, all hand made... Then I had to run it under the truck along the brake lines which resulted in my face being covered in dirt every time I touched something. Shows I actually use it for what it's supposed to be though! Pictures coming sometime this week. It's too dark now.

I also really need to get a build thread up here. I think I'm worthy at this point in my build.

Nothing!!!!!!!!!!

Just posting because when servers where down I was finding out that this website is my crack cocaine and I was dieing.

I rebuilt the cabin equalization flap

found this while washing the truck...almost dismissed it as road trash...

I went and picked up some shower liner and cut out a couple of flaps

you will need to pull your trim from the bumper and remove the bumper end. The part rotates out, be careful not to break the plastic tabs that pulls it up tight to the fender well. I had read where someone posted that they packed theirs full of air filter material...however my sun roof drains out through this as well. I would figure it would turn moldy and smell up the cabin.

Hey guys I'm new here. I just recently took off my running boards and I have been thinking about getting a lift on it but I don't have tons of money to buy one and pay for someone to put it on for me. Any suggestions about that or how I can improve my 4Runner?

I think you already did....

Really depends on what you've got in mind to do with it. I ran mine stock for a number of years before lifting it, instead focusing on keeping it maintained and taking care of those things that get spendy when they fail, like the lower ball joints and (not me, I have manual trannies) a trans oil cooler to avoid the strawberry milkshake if an auto tranny. That way I had a truck in good mechanical condition, a better idea of what I wanted from it and maybe by then a little extra dough to lift (and maintain the lift) with.

Absolom's lift thread is an interesting read too.

Year and things like if it's got a locker or whatever might help, too. :)

I got mine ready for a long road trip. It probably won't make it back to FL until after the New Year, so I had plenty to do.

I gave it a Royal Purple oil change, rotated the tires, checked the rear diff fluid and checked all the fluids under the hood.

Then I changed the plugs, wires, and PCV valve. To my surprise they were the original plugs it left Japan with in 2000, with 210k miles on them. :suspicious:

That made a real difference! :bowl:

Today I:

took off rear cargo window panel. I used a flashlight to see a bolt was loose.

Now my window rolls down!

Ok thanks And its a 2001. What lift kit did you get on yours and how much in total did it so cost?

If yer talking at me on the 96 I've got a Sonoran Steel 1.2 and he's got a website you can look it up on. Not the cheapest, but the best for me and the type of stuff I do. On the 99 it's a stocker suspension-wise.

As for total cost on the 96? Welllll, time for you to do some researches. If you can turn a wrench and get a bit greasy it could be cheaper. A lift is the beginning of the hit to the wallet, again, depending on what you do.

Lots of info here to help you learn some hows and to check out people's builds and see what would work best for what you do. There's some really excellent stuff on here. It can seem overwhelming, but keep looking and reading and you'll get it squared away. That'll also net you some time to save some more pennies and get what you decide you really want.

I still think maintenance is first and foremost.

You do have a nice truck to start with. :)
