What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Is that spuds over on Alki beach? Miss Seattle been down Tucson way for 10 years now. Ugh miss the fresh seafood up there

Yup. That's the one. I love their fish. Although they are owned by Ivar's, they have a different batter that they use that is far better than most fish and chips I have tried. It was in the mid 90s with bright blue skies and beaming sun, so I didn't stick around too long down on the water.

Could've been worse...

The Country

I wondered about you when you told me never to leave a box of wooden, strike-anywhere matches lying around the house because the mice might get into them and start a fire. But your face was absolutely straight when you twisted the lid down on the round tin where the matches, you said, are always stowed. Who could sleep that night? Who could whisk away the thought of the one unlikely mouse padding along a cold water pipe behind the floral wallpaper gripping a single wooden match between the needles of his teeth? Who could not see him rounding a corner, the blue tip scratching against a rough-hewn beam, the sudden flare, and the creature for one bright, shining moment suddenly thrust ahead of his time— now a fire-starter, now a torchbearer in a forgotten ritual, little brown druid illuminating some ancient night. Who could fail to notice, lit up in the blazing insulation, the tiny looks of wonderment on the faces of his fellow mice, onetime inhabitants of what once was your house in the country?

B.C.
Your self-medicated profundity has left me removing all matches from our house in the suburbs.

Ordered new carpet for it today. Will also be ordering new plugs and wires for it this week.

Once that's squared away I will drive it until I find a 5th gen Trail that I want. After driving this for the past ~9.5 years, it's time to move on to something newer! I will be sad to see this go, but it's got 264k miles and has spent most it's life in Rhode Island and Minnesota... so it's rusty. Otherwise, I'd definitely keep and maintain it.

For old times sake, here it is shortly after I bought it with 140k on it. Bought it in GA where I lived... not realizing at the time it was a Rhode Island truck -- read: I didn't check for rust. I moved to Minnesota shortly after buying it.

Not sure if I'm going to go with a 2010-2013, or 2014-current.
If I go 2010-2013 it'll definitely be the silver TE, or black TE.
If I go 2014-current it'll be either magnetic gray or black TE.

I really like the magnetic gray.. but all my Toyota's have been black! So, I'm not sure if I should break the cycle.

Totally. FSM and I watched a YouTube video a couple times. Had a mechanic buddy come help actually place the heads, but I've done the rest.

Nice man, I'm proud of you. Hopefully you button her all back up and theres not like a grinding camshaft noise or something from misalignment, lol.

What did you do again? Replace heads or got the heads machined? Crack in the head right?

Had a cracked driver's side head, so replaced them both.

She's all back together and seems to be running like new =)

I love the red on black for your truck... front bumper and the hood scoop are sick too.. nice work.

My exhaust looks about as shitty as yours. It's funny how the frame can be clean and the exhaust looks like its a rust bucket truck.

I struggled with the same 02 nut, except I got mine off without breaking the stud after 3 minutes of the mini torch, I see you weren't so lucky :)

So the new bolt you put in, it just threaded into the old hole without issues or did you tap a new thread?

Sweet deal.

I'm sure you feel awesome after going through that...

The only real thing that seems scary about the job is the proper valve adjustments and all that, or maybe its easy and its just me never being exposed to it. Also there is some order to the camshaft details on removal and putback that I'm sure you remember in the FSM etc.

I just don't like using feeler gauges, so checking the clearance was my least favorite part. However, since my new heads were "loaded" I was able to salvage shims out of the old heads to get them dialed in.

The camshafts were not an issue. Just have to make sure the tensioner spring within the gear is "loaded" and insert a bolt into the service hole. If the spring is not loaded, just turn it with a pulley holder to where the holes line up, insert a bolt.

My BIGGEST lesson learned from this whole ordeal is that nothing is as difficult as the internet makes it seem. Time consuming as hell, but it's all essentially just loosening and tightening bolts, and cleaning sealing surfaces.

And having the right tools helps.

We're your cams badly out of adjustment ?

Nothing on a car is really that hard once you get inside and starting learning. Its all wrenching.

The real issue is when you do all this work and your head gasket goes. Or you reused head bolts that stretched. Thats when it becomes a PITA!!!

Brought it back to pavement ready again...Sob

Spent the entire weekend stripping it back down, changing out the wheels/tires, changing my color from Desert Tan to IJM again - not that I don't like Desert Tan. I'm definitely looking forward to the next little trip. Just need to keep the Husqvarna and KTM's away from it.

They were not out of adjustment at all.

Totally agree. Because of that, I bought all new Toyota gaskets, and all new Toyota head bolts and had an experienced mechanic here for the preparation of the block's surface, gasket placement, and head bolt torquing.
