What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Pulled out a stripped transmission drain plug which was leaking very slowly. Grabbed it with channel locks and pulled while turning. Replaced it with a new one and a crush washer, and put a tiny bit of FIPG around the base of the bolt to seal in case it wouldn't torque like before. Very carefully torqued to 15 ft/lbs. Success. Hopefully there's not metal from the threads left inside there. I'll probably drop the pan and clean the magnets and replace the filter at some point.

Made today slightly better after getting a $1600 dentist bill this morning.

Maybe find one of those powerful rare earth magnets and slap it on the outside near the plug. Perhaps it will help trap and hold any potential metal fragments left behind untill you can get the pan down.

The internal magnets are not all that strong – at least mine didn't seem so.

Just a thought.

I just checked the sheet they sent with the shocks and it does say 0-3". I also am curious about why they have not changed it on the website though...not like it would take much effort.

Did you end up getting the 3rd gen shocks for the rear? I thought you were going with the 4th gen shocks because they are longer?

Picked up this little thing

You can find those super easy at any truck wrecking yard. The old ones have low boost/volume...and are useable....the new ones...well they will blow you!! LOL....just a joke but they put out way too much boost/volume.

I put a larger one than spec on a 400BC....freaking thing would out pull a 550C15....never let anyone tell you there is no difference in blow jobs. Thge only difference is how long they last.... HAHAHA

Yeah so a couple things happened this past weekend...
First thing is I herculined my back bumper step. It was faded and I thought, "hey why not?". So I did that. Very happy with results. Next thing was I added a couple of patches to my beginning collection. And finally I ordered a new center console arm rest.

in theory, they would suit the super flex coils better. Because toytec recommends the bilstein 5100 which are 4th gen rear shocks. But, form experience, ICON 4th gen remote resi shocks wont fit nicley on our 3rd gen. The way the resi comes of the shock is different then the actual remote resi 3rd gen.

but if icon truly made a 3" rear shock, then ill say he should be good.

Yes it does, on the 4runners with that capability. 99-02 I believe

I would like to see this. I went with the scan gauge II because I hadn't found a success story of any yr 3rd gen running the trans temp successfully

You can find a complete STS kit for a tacoma at your junkyard? You've got better junkyards than I have lol

I wonder if too strong of a magnet could interfere with the internals? Somebody probably makes a magnetic drain plug that size but I haven't checked. Or these things:

I did end up getting 3rd gen shocks, so that must have been someone else! I don't think I posted that I was getting anything new until it arrived. Once they are in, I will measure them up and see if they are truly meant for 3".

That's what I'm hoping too!

So on Wednesday I learned that I was sent the wrong coilovers, but the shocks and UCAs were good. Both Icon and TotalAutomotiveLV have been extremely responsive and helpful about the whole situation, so I am very appreciative of them. Hopefully I get the new coilovers early next week to get my car off the stands!

So instead pf putting the coilovers on, I worked on getting the Tundra brakes in.

The TBU is a breeze. Just a heads up, I had the "soft pedal" after the swap. I also replaced my rear shoes at the same time but I had to adjust them A LOT to get it right. I also had to bed the fronts three times to get the pedal feel normal again. And before anyone says it, yes the system was bled correctly.

To finally get the rears adjusted I went with the back up slowly and repeatedly raise and lower the parking brake method. Sounds crazy but the self-adjusters work when braking in reverse in this rig. Once I did that a few times it made the whole system solid. So if you get that squishy feeling, bed 3x and adjust the rears.

Thanks for the tips. I think this is my 3rd time doing the TBU, but I've done plenty of other brake jobs on different cars. On my '99 it had a slightly softer pedal, but it wasn't too bad. I'm wondering if the new master cylinder in the '01 will help with it. I was putting in my old SS lines, but couldn't get the hard line from the L-fitting to the flex hose off since it was previously rounded. Just bought a new line from Toyota for $8, so once that's in I will be able to bleed the brakes.

I want I do this to my back step ..what I have now is strips of grip tape on the ribs then I plastidip ..it works good but the tape and plastidip have taken a good beaten and are all messed up..do you worry about the lineing getting busted up ? I imagine not
