295/70r17, or How I turned my rig into a dog.

Took the new tires out for a drive.

First the good news. No rubbing at full lock anywhere after trimming and grinding. The Nitto Grapplers are bad ass. They eat up sand, shale, and rock. A world of difference in traction. All five tires took less then 4oz of weight to balance. With the winners being 1.7oz on two of them. Those are both up front. The "wobble" I had at 65 MPH is gone. Cruising at 75 and it's like I just drove it off the showroom floor.

Now, the bad news. There's a long 7 mile grade I use as a litmus test for all my rigs. With the old 265/70r16's my rig could still be at 65 MPH in third with OD off by the top of the grade. With the larger tires, not even close. I was below 65 about 1/2 mile up the hill. It struggled hard. I ended up just putting it in 2nd ear and easing up to the top at 50 MPH and 3500 RPM's.

I was expecting this but it's a little worse than I'd hoped for. My next purchase was gonna be a rear swingout. After driving it today I am going with a re-gear. ECGS will be putting ARB's in both diff's. I was leaning towards 4.88 but know I'm seriously considering 5.29.

Who's running 5.29 with a similar tire size?

Spring Cleaning

Completed the annual spring cleaning and touch up. Ready to go out and get new Arizona pin stripes. Buffed, waxed, shampooed, painted sliders and bumpers and steamed the motor.

Got new BFG KO2 lt265/75/16 tires. Actually their used. And I actually got them Friday and mounted them yesterday. I bought them on Craigslist from a guy with a 3rd gen Taco. It was deal I couldn't pass up. About 7k miles with Discount Tire certificates for less than half of what they would cost new! Needless to say, I'm super excited. Oh, and if anyone is looking for some tires in the DFW area, I have some Firestone Destination ATs in the same size on Craigslist. They're almost new too.

What do you like to use for machine buffing and waxing? I tried to learn stuff from Autogeek, that forum is way too confusing.

I'm not sure if they even make mine anymore. A few years ago they were talking about a new model that was balanced a bit better. Two Flex's? That cost you a couple $$!! I'm sure your vehicles are kept in pristine condition. Pads are key!

No I don't have a Flex, but yes they are the bees knees when it comes to polishers. Anyone who owns one of these knows what they're doing. It was too steep for my blood at the time. Would have had to sacrifice too many Starbucks.

What also makes the Griots nice is that it has a lifetime warranty. I have played with the Griots BOSS, both the 15mm and 21mm, which are nice but may be overkill.

I used to detail a guy's sweet Porsche collection for nice $$$ back in 2010 to 12 and the Flex 3401 and PE-14 did not disappoint. But if I were a first time user it could be too much machine. I use them maybe three times a year now at the most.

The key to achieving the best detailing results is through trial and error.

Been working on the list. Getting ready for a supercharger install and a Colorado visit this summer.

Lucky to have a close friend donate their valuable time, skills, and hardwork to my 4runner project. I returned home from work to find the truck fully detailed, and my newer rims blacked out.

I am building a screw driver antenna for the Yaesu, which I currently have no plan when I will finish.

I installed an automatic shifter handle on my manual shift lever because the OD button works great as a PTT button to make the system a hands-free one without using the oem mic.

JA has some good hints and procedures to get a good shine. And procedure is paramount.

This is the combo I usually point beginners to. It has everything but wax:

I'd use Meguiars Ultimate Wax from Wally Word for $20. It is darn good:

Hondas are known to have soft paint, but with this combo you can't really hurt the clear coat.

Wash the car first. The clay the car. Meguiars Clay Bar works well. Spray the detailer onto a section, then kneed the clay and pull it against the paint that has the detailer spray on it. It should glide until you hit a dry spot. Then rekneed the clay, spray some more detailer, and keep going. $20 at Walmart:

With the ultimate compound, use the orange pad at speed 5.5. Make a 12" square, going side to side, then up and down, then buff off. If you feel good, do the whole car. Apply a little downward pressure here and for the polish but you still want the pad to spin freely.

With the polish, speed at 5, use the white pad. Same procedure.

I'd forgo the blue pad and just apply the wax by hand.

Make sure you have at least eight microfiber towels on hand. Soak the pads in Dawn, then rinse them an hour later.

In all probably about $250 to $270 out the door.
