What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

But today I did replace LBJs, ITREs, OTRS, front links and pinion boots.

The best thing about getting a set of pullers from Harbor Freight is... uh..
Well, they replaced the set due to failure in workmanship or manufacture... I managed to break 2 of them trying to free a rusty tie rod end from the LBJ, and since I was within 90 days of purchase.

Took the new set home, promptly broke one more. At that point I just removed the inner and outer tie rod pieces together, then removed the LBJ I was aiming to replace anyhow, all in one connected piece.

I might take this replacement set back again, and/or sell it on Craigslist.

Good thing I was doing this too - The driver's side seemed ok, but I didn't have to break the passenger LBJ free at all - soon as the castle nut & bolts were out, it came right out of the arm without any pressure needed, and the ball was loose and had noticeable play in its seat.

Now I need an alignment and maybe let that shop quote me the upper ball joints too - since they're in the back seat. Even soaking in PB Blaster overnight I couldn't budge the upper castle nut to start either side.

Finally installed the lift! King Coilovers, King Rear Shocks (adjustable), OME 906 springs, Total Chaos UCA's, adjustable panhard bar, diff drop and front and rear braided brake lines. The reverse rake is bothering me so I may get some trim packers to level out the rear...

Finally got some time this morning to mount my winch on/off switch. I placed in on the fan shroud. Seems bomber but time will tell. Also had time to squeeze in the diff breather mod.



Then, of course, I had to go test out the diff breather. I went up Silver Canyon and down Wyman Creek Canyon. The crossings up Silver where deeper then Wyman but these shots will give you an idea why it's called Wyman Creek Rd. Super fun trip with about 50 miles of dirt and streams than 40 miles of pavement home.

Did you have a hitch already that rusted out? If not, how was the job of mounting a trailer hitch to a frame that didn't have one previously?

Mine previously didn't have one and I was in need of one for a bike rack. As far as installation I don't have an impact wrench so I used a socket wrench and put a long steel bar over the end for leverage. Did the trick to get the two tow hooks off. I then used the same bolts that I got off the hitch and tightened those back on as tight as I possible could get them without an impact wrench. It'll do just fine when the only thing I'm using the hitch for is a bike rack and a bike.

Finished modding the AllPro front bumper to work with a 2" BL.

Finally got around to replacing the tin-foil front bumper with something a bit stouter - 4XInnovations plate bumper.

I wired some Rigid Dually lights up to the stock foglight wiring. I'm still thinking I will move the CB antenna from the back by the hatch up to the front bumper, supposedly they work a lot better up that than back being partly shielded by the body.

Huh, I didn't realize that the older 3rd gens utilized less mounting bolts than the later years.

The fat-lips might seem like tin foil, but the earlier bumpers are half the weight with fewer mounting spots. I could bake potatoes in that thing!

Nice. If I remember correctly you don't have a rear swingout currently. I'm getting one but want to get an idea of how high the 861's put a non bumpered rig. Could you get some photo's and some hub to fender numbers for me when you get a chance. Thanks man.

I do have a rear swing out and full Shrockworks treatment.

Super jealous! That sounds like so much fun. My recent trip up there got cut short but man that area is beautiful. I bet it's even more fun when there are some good obstacles to make it through. Eventually I'll have to make another trip up there and take the less traveled route like you did.

Custom. I talked to 4xInnovations about eventual front bumpers with receivers when we bought the rear bumpers and he said sure, wouldn't be a problem. True to their word, they are easy to deal with, even had a couple of options to offer.

I don't know, judging by that rear tire — there might just be 4 or 5 dead bodies back there weighing it down. Or they might have just spent all their money on plasti-dip for the wheels and can't afford free air...

It does...if you have a '99+. The older years don't have a compatible temp sensor.
