What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

First, a couple of preventative cooling system things:
- My wife found a new radiator in a truck at the pick-n-pull. From the date code on it it must have only been in the truck for a few months before it got wrecked. My '99 still had the original radiator, with the brown colored tank. It was probably going to crack and leak at some point in the near future.
- The rear heat had the painted steel lines. The paint was peeling off, and big flakes of rust with it. Not sure when it was going to leak, but it was coming. I got some stainless (looks like?) lines from a 01-02 3rd gen in a junkyard and put those on. It's a little hassle to get them out and back in, but a few little bends and some fidgeting around, it's all in place.

And fixed an actual problem - the leaking passenger side front diff seal. I rebooted that CV a while back, and thought I'd been really careful putting it back in, I apparently messed up the seal? Anyhow, took the CV out and replaced the seal, and refilled the front diff. It was a couple of cups low. Not so low that I'm worried about it.

Alooominnneeeum I think.

When you say retorqued, do you mean loose?

I began trying to check off different causes of the new rattle. There was nothing obvious. I did check the UCA mounting bolts. They should have been torqued to 85 foot pounds. There were not. I just tightened them up a bit and got them torqued correctly. That wasn't the cause of the noise. I have checked the Savage skids. Those are all tight. I moved my front engine skid slightly forward. But it sounds like something clanging against the skids. The sound goes unidentified as of yet. I know one of my front roller fairlead has some play and jingles up and down, but I don't really thing that's it either. I probably need to just pull the skid and see if something is coming into contact with the skid to make the clanging.

Got the 7th injector installed and wired up. Under the hood was quick, remove two nuts/studs, install injector with bolts, chop fuel line in half and install the t fitting. Then the wiring, maybe an hour or so once I pulled the glove box etc out of the way. I skipped the fuel pump for now, I'll see if I actually need it-some get away without it. So all in all, a couple of hours in no particular rush.

With no tuning (and no A/F or PSI gauges installed yet) it runs well on the URD installed tune. The High load/low RPM knock is gone. I don't notice any more power really, but again I have no idea where I'm at tune-wise. Not nearly the headache I had heard. Putting a stereo unit in is honestly harder to do.

You guys with your super clean trucks make me jealous. Is the whole state paved? Seriously. I drive out my drive and mine has mud splotches on it. Shit. I've gotta move somewhere without dirt.

Not done yet, but I recently picked up a set of 265/75R16's to replace my current 9 year old 285/75R16's. I'm also wanting to ditch the wheel spacers and make this rig slightly more road friendly without sacrificing too much of the current "look" and offroad capability.

Anywho, the tires I picked up also happened to come already mounted onto 16" split spoke wheels, but they are in pretty rough shape. Spent a few hours prepping yesterday and applied Duplicolor paint to one of the wheels as a test.

I debated going with something other than silver, but the '97 desert Dune/silver combo with chrome bumpers doesn't really look that great with dark colored wheels IMO, unless you can break that up with a polished ridge or some white lettered tires or something. Anywho, I think this silver will do nicely.

Next step after these are balanced and installed will be to hunt for a single used 265/75R16 tire that I can mount to one of my spare split spoke wheels and put back into the stock spare tire mounting location.

Replaced the passenger airbag cover. Original was all gummed up from the PO resting lumber or something on it.

thanks man! mine is 4x4...i also am looking to put a after market front bumper/winch on as well as a after market back bumper...

with a 3in lift should i also look at dropping diff.? i don't think 3in lift will put that much stress on everything

For your budget you can look at 5100/bilsteins upfront and OME 890 rear springs with SportComp shocks (assuming no aftermarket bumpers) for a 3" lift and clear 31.5" tires no problem. Toytec can get you a package for that to your door for about $1K

Or you can look at their 3" fixed kit 3" lift ToyTec/Bilstein kit for 96-02 4Runner but not if you're a 4Cyl 2WD

do you think for best result i should go with the 5100/bilsteins up front and ome 890 rear springs with sports comp shocks instead of the toytec lift?

I'd go with a diff drop and also have a contingency plan ready for your CV boots . Especially if they have a bunch of miles on them .

It has 250k on it and its all original stock set up now! so with that being said i was thinking about putting better control arms and sway bars on it...DO YOU think i should go ahead and replace CV boots as well? if so what else should i look in to replacing in the front end so i don't have to go back in later and replace it?

also with the lifts he said which one would you go with?

any advice is greatly appreciated

thanks!!!!!

How hard and with what did you hit those? My Tacoma rims are really oxidized...I hand sanded one and haven't painted it yet...debating on whether it will be worth it to do the other 3 by hand or just find 4 used rims at an auto yard... Just not sure if I should use a sandpaper wheel on my grinder or wire wheel or anything other than hand sanding to finish.

Trying to sell your spacers?:cool:

Finished up the surprisingly tedious install of the Sonoran Steel rear poly body mounts... in anticipation for my CBI rear hybrid bumper that's on the way.
