Decided to clean something weird in the 4Runner, so I pulled out all of the visible trim screws and sanded them with 220 grit sandpaper before (and I'm prepared to take shit for this) spray painting and clearing them to match the wheels. Here's a midpoint shot to show you how nasty/crusty the screws were vs. the two sanded ones. I'll upload more pictures of the finished product so that you can have a good laugh.

That looks great! Any link to a DIY you followed? Also what exactly did you use for the grille/mesh part? I want to do this asap now that my headlight HID conversion is done. Thanks

Are these the sill plate screws? Mine are all corroded too, it's on my to do list to paint them. Thanks for blazing the trail.

I visited a junkyard today and walked away confused but with an idea.

I always thought that it was dumb for the fuel release lever be more difficult to reach than the hood release (even though *I* probably open the hood more often than the fuel door, it still seems backwards for the "ordinary" folks).

So as I was browsing the junkyard and looking at a picked over '02, something jumped out at me (not a good thing at junkyards!). The '02 had the fuel release more accessible than the hood release! Like it should be, IMO.




I thought of taking that panel and adapting it to mine (half my truck is converted to '99 + anyway, why stop now), but the panel was gray and my interior is oak. So I took a pic of the back of the panel, just to remember it:



This is where it gets weird. I stumbled across a '97, and looked at its panel, which was just like mine (fuel release out of the way, hood release very prominent):



Flipped the panel over, and saw that it looks identical to the '02, just with the release levers in different locations:



So I realized that the two panels were identical, just had the levers swapped. I got home and confirmed with the owners manual that for the '97, this was the correct orientation - hood release prominent, fuel release tucked away.

So my question is, did Toyota swap these two levers in the '02, or did the previous owner of the '02 decide to swap the levers (which I think is brilliant, and is no more than 5 minutes of work)? Regardless, I think this is next on my to-do list - and at zero cost, how refreshing!

Thanks! I used the customcargrills.com YouTube video and pre-cut mesh from their website. Its not as cheap as using mesh or gutter guard from HD, but I'm happy with the result.

Parked the 4Runner in the garage for a few days at the least. Started valve covers, knock sensors, harness and fuel injectors. Want to only do this once :hail:

That’s perfect. I’ll order that asap as I really like the look.

Bingo. Here's what I'm looking at this morning after a quick spray paint last night. Certainly a lot better than they were, but I should have warmed the bottle before laying down the first coat. I'll let them dry for a day or two before reinstalling them.

Also did the five rear door sill trim screws to match (same color, different lighting). This is three light coats of primer/paint followed by two coats of clear.

A couple of those have some orange peel. Time to wet sand and polish to perfection! :biggrin2:

I dont think you're crazy, I replaced all of mine with Stainless Steel from the hardware store.

neutral safety switch 99 limited

backed out of garage..tested neutral safety switch that i adjusted. Seems to be properly working. A 4runner is a quality piece of machinery.

Put in my 99+ shifter bezel and igntion bezel as well as new rear lift struts. Everything trim wise matches, except for my instrument cluster. It's just a tad darker next to my igntion bezel. Now for the cup holder from a 99+!

Forgot to ask... Is yours gloss or matte black? Can't clearly tell from the photos.

Reinstalled the trim screws (using a latex glove-over-screwdriver technique to minimize scratching that worked really well; would recommend). It's surprisingly hard to get a relevant photo of them but here's my attempt. Overall they do look way better than before.

Refreshed the old stock headlights. Besides the old, tired and oxidized lens, one of them had a 1” diameter hole in it. Was a little worried to venture from the stock lens replacement but I’m pretty happy with the finished product.
