What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Been out of the 3rd gen world for a while, but found a dirt cheap 96 3.4 4x4 E-locked 5-speed for the girlfriend. It’s got a brand new clutch, front brakes, rack, and tires. I just did a timing belt, water pump, tstat, tensioner, bearings, and valve cover gaskets. I’m either going to have to go thru the trans or replace it with a marlin crawler rebuild, 4th syncros are bad and the input shaft bearing is noisy.

foglight mod
DRL mod
swapped bulbs in drivers side fog light and it's still off, so now I get to track down the issue or replace the whole unit, woohoo!

Left it parked in the driveway. Then proceeded to get in the Taco to rally some dirt. As much as I like my rig the truck is way more fun to drive. The whole idea of a cheap beater truck was to allow my wife to go do dirt road things when I had the runner. Now I have to get her another beater cause the 5-speed in the Taco NEEDS to go in my rig. lol

Created a shackle mount with some solid 2" steel. Also end up doing the blue wire mod as well. Thinking about putting in a front mount receiver as well.

attempted to rewind my seat belt retractor's so they actually pull the belt back. the rewind was successful but the springs are too far gone to get any benefit from it. darn.

Got the front modded bumper and the $50 extended-extended Rola rack powdercoated and installed.

Picked up a 2002 with 188,000 miles. Pretty regular oil changes, but hard to tell what else has been done. Changed all the fluids first.

This weekend started the timing belt - which looks to be original.

New member here. Today I installed a new Toytec Boss suspension kit. Later this week I'll be getting some new BFG 285 75 16's and an alignment.

Got the knock sensors and harness installed. Spent some time cleaning up the engine -- previous owner was a little less anal about maintenance and cleanliness than I am I guess :p

Waiting on fuel injectors from FiveOMotorsports and then can button everything back up.

Gave a ride back today at Point Lobos in Big Sur to an older gentleman and his wife whose RX450 hybrid battery had conked out and had no idea that the battery to jump (12v) was in the rear as opposed to the front engine bay. Wasn't sure how to jump a hybrid/Prius style setup but quickly realized that it is essentially the same procedure. I just jumped the rear 12v battery with my portable Costco battery jumper hoping for the best and it started right up! Glad to have helped out the gentleman, who was really looking stressed when we came across them.

Put a new front O2 sensor on the '99, 219K miles.

A couple of reasons for doing this. First: The original nuts holding on the O2 sensor (possibly the one installed at the factory? I've owned it since 155K miles) finally crumbled into dust a week ago, and the O2 sensor popped off of the exhaust pipe when I was about 2 blocks from home. No CEL while it was dangling in open air (really, Toyota? Seems fishy...).

Secondly - I have been noticing a sort of wavering loss of power mostly noticed when the engine is cold and you're doing part throttle acceleration. Not missing or running roughly, you just sort of feel the engine going through weak 'patches' in the RPM range. If you put your foot all the way on the floor it pulls smoothly (I'm assuming the ECU goes open loop at WOT?). Sort of like the mixture wandering around out of spec.

Anyhow, brand new sensor on (with copper nuts) and the wavering weakness is gone, it pulls smoothly when cold at any part throttle, no noticeable improvement for flooring it.

Now to wait to see if the MPG improves on the next tank of gas.
