Went on my first ever "wheeling" trip, at Red Rock Canyon. Nothing too serious, probably didn't even need to engage the 4WD, but I didn't want to try anything too challenging on my first time out and make a fool of myself.

If you head a little bit East towards Randsburg then go North from Garlock you will find Mesquite Canyon which is pretty fun. You can take it all the way North thru the El Paso mountains(I think that's what they are called), then go West and get back to the 14. Tons of trails, camping, etc., even a spring back there, Sheep Spring.

That's on the other side of the 14 from where we went. It looked more busy, and I was afraid of all the dune buggies and motorcycles . Is it pretty tame for a beginner like me?

Your fears are healthy and warranted, I too am in a similar position with off-roading my DD, so I err on the conservative side. That being said, there are trails of varying diversity at all OHV areas, but I'm willing to wheel anywhere, so if you have a quiet spot, I'm happy to meet you.

Shifter bushings. There was nothing but dust left in mine, and the difference is astounding.

Heard a loud clunk making a right turn, so looked underneath and one of the end links snapped. It was only 6 months old. As a bonus I found that my CV boot is torn. Either the nut that snapped off tore it or it's been torn for not very long because I checked on them about a week ago.

The end link was an ACDelco 46G20513A. Didn't survive 1 winter.

What did you do to your 3rd gen today?

Well I received my ARB pump up kit from wheelers and installed it.

Also made a trip to Lowes and got some needed accessories cause he quick attachment wouldn't let me cover the compressor and installed that as well.

Did a pressure test and it's all good to go!

Also replaced my brakes and rotors cause that was needed.

And installed my Yellow Top Battery.

Overall a successful day.

Those are some great pics! Didn't know there was a lot of wheeling in Spring TX! I was there last year and I really liked Spring. Had BBQ at The Corkscrew!!!

Thanks! Hidden Falls is actually about 30 mins west of Austin, so it was about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Spring for me. Out here in my neck of the woods it's all mud unfortunately, so you gotta travel a bit to get some crawling.

All in all, I believe the park is over 3k acres. Places for camping and also has a shooting range. Love it.

I put one of my old lift-gate shocks back in to keep it from knocking me out every time I open it. Seems like just one of the new ones is enough

Rear Bumper Construction

I took off my rear bumper and replaced it with a temporary wood one! It's nice to have an easy on/off bumper when building a new one. The 18 bolts on the stock rear bumper take awhile to remove. 20+ bolts if you include the mud flaps.

A little delayed - I put together my AJT key fob which is nice, but there's some clearance issues on the buttons when fully tight. Had to massage it a bit so my lock button wasn't held tight.

I'm having to crunch some numbers though, I discovered some concerning issues when I pulled my winter tires off last night.

I have 2 leaking axle seals (yay!)
A pair of leaking rear struts (woo!)
Looks like the rack has started leaking as well (lovely!)

The dilemma is that if I'm going to do it, I plan to do it right. Which means it'll be a $2500 (Canuck-Buck) bill at the end.

It's a combination of time and money, both of which are in terribly short supply right now.

BUT... I know if I were to sell and replace it, I'd just replace it with another 3rd gen or possibly the 5th gen that is in the cards in a couple of years.

So why buy another potential basket-case?
