What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

I'm been slowly building a rear bumper and swingout for a trip this weekend (Kokopelli Trail into Moab) and I finally loaded up the spare tire and fuel can to double check everything works as planned. It's not done, but it's good enough for now.

Also filled up the jerry can to be sure it didn't leak since it's from 1973!

Got a box from RockAuto filled with Moog rear springs ( as a temp solution for more expensive problem) and some Beck Arnley brake shoes. I hit a pick and pull between rain storms and got an almost new P265 70 16 all terrain tire for $20, not an exact match for the new 265 75 16's that I have but good enough for a spare. It will go on a 16" Taco steelie and replace the rusted to-hell-and back original spare wheel/tire that are under the rig right now.

Ahhh, nothing like trying to live above your means by scrounging through a junk yard....:biggrin2:

when I bought my truck it had a 265/70/16 spare (never used) under the rear and when I pulled it off and placed next to my new 265/75/16 it seems to be the exact height, maybe off a hair.

could you post some more pics of the bumper? interested in the swing arm mostly. i bought one a few years ago and it needs some work now. so i'm looking for ideas

Installed the 'Motefusi' snorkel. This is to prevent a reoccurrence of the 'dust' issues we had out int he Utah desert a couple of years ago.

Wasn't too shy about chopping holes in my fender, replacement green fenders aren't that hard to find.

Even though I knew the hole saw was going to jump when it finally broke through, and (I thought) was ready for it, it jumped a lot more than I was expecting, hopped out of the hole, and put a couple of nice deep scratches in the fender. I dabbed some primer on them while painting the edges of the holes, just to stop it from rusting. I'll rub that off and get some Imperial Jade Green (tm) touch up paint later on.

This is intended to primarily help with dust, but I've been surprised (in a bad way) by a few puddles before. It would be nice to have the next *big* surprise just involve cleaning mud out instead of swapping in a new engine.

Broke this stupid little part that makes filling up suck.

Repair is easy enough. The toyota part is under $10. Dishes done!

Got my ball joints in today from amazon but to my surprise amazon stickered over the Toyota part number? Wtf? How do I know if these are legit? There’s a Toyota sticker underneath the amazon sticker but anyone can resticker the bag. Plus I can’t read what the sticker says underneath because again the p/n is blocked off... any help would be appreciated are there any indicators I should look out for that let me know they’re legit?:help::doh::wtf:

Hold the label over a bright light. You'll be able to read the numbers off the lower label thru the upper label.

I had to do this with a Toyota part I ordered from Amazon recently; the original numbers matched what I thought I had ordered.

After 2 years of no problems on my 02 with an engine full of sludge, the frame finally gave it up to rust. Took me only 3 weeks to find this one. Spend a lot of its life in AZ . And to top it off it's Desert Dune which I thought I would never find,
Hopefully got lucky, Have to change the radiator for piece of mind and I am sure a few other things, such as the P1036 code that popped up after a 300 mile maiden voyage shore run. Literally got home, dropped into reverse to back in and the CEL popped on. Came up as a p1036. down flow o2 sensor

How are you resetting the p1036 code? I've taken mine to 3 different mechanics and they cant even find what the code means, or how to fix it. Haven't taken it to Toyota, don't want to pay $200 just to check it out.

Finished with the first round of setting up the Joying Android head unit. Definitely not for the general population but the nerdier types can work with it.

The Nav system that comes with it is actually ok, except I can't figure out how turn off the B!tch in the box that tells me I'm over the speed limit, all the time.

The WiFi connection works well, but is very slow for downloading apps and offline maps. Tethering off my phones hotspot works well for typical stuff - Waze, Yelp, etc if I want it.

The stock music player sucks, but is easier than to use Google Music Play usually.

I loaded up Backcountry Navigator, works pretty well. Found a source for Map bundles so I don't have to worry about data access.

Had trouble getting it to recognize my OBD2 bluetooth reader so got a USB one, now have Torque running on it.

If there's any HAMs out there, I also have APRSDroid running on it, which now also is integrated with Backcountry Navigator. Have to set up a radio to send and receive APRS still that will connect via Bluetooth, but that's in the works.

My 1996 Toyota 4Runner SR5 (5VZ-FE engine) is having the following problem after replacing valve covers and fuel injectors:

on start-up, it starts up beautifully.

after start-up, it goes from 1k rpm to 500, slowly, sluggishly, almost like it's saying "h e e e e e l p . . . m e e e . . ." and then after, it stalls out and dies, and so does a piece of my soul.

I have pulled the intake plenum (upper and lower), smells like fuel. Throttle body? Smells like fuel? Throttle body gasket has a thin film of fuel on it, like if you were coated in baby oil and also smelled like fuel and looked like beefsix's throttle body gasket.

Pull spark plugs, cyl 5 has a visible fuel drop on it. All cylinders on left bank smell like fuel. Right bank has no noticeable smell, but I did pull those almost 2 hours laters after taking a nap and petting my dog, 'cuz **** this shit.


That's as far as I've got so far, because besides googling, looking shit up, talking some shit on forums, buying a 20 rack of beer and some weed (Go Knights Go) I am not entirely sure what my next step should be. Buy not shit cheap eBay injectors? Go RockAuto remans? End life? What do now t4r?

Replaced the flapper vent in the back that lets dust in. And found that the poorly done bodywork repair behind the bumper was letting water and rusted out behind the wheel area a bit, plus the undercoating stuff in the wheel well was cracked and letting water through there too. I have to seal it up somehow.

Well, it was actually a few days ago, but we filled it up and drove to Wisconsin to camp for the weekend. Thought we'd beat the Memorial Day weekend rush. Good time, great camping truck!
