What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Loaded the truck up today for a road trip. Heading out tomorrow morning for DC. After that, heading up to Michigan and then back across headed home. Going to cross through at least 19 states.

If you see a strange green 4runner in your area, wave, it might be me!

Yesterday I replaced the burnt out cluster bulb that lights up the gear selector for "D". When I got the cluster out, I quickly learned that the OEM bulbs are NOT #74 like everyone says on the webz, the OEM bulbs are smaller in diameter. What I did was switch out a bulb holder for the rear locker indicator and put it in for the "D" then used the #74 bulb/holder in the locker indicator position. the #74 ended up being a bit brighter so it works out fine with it in a position that rarely lights up.

I rock my burnt out Drive indicator like a badge of honor.

Cleaned it up and applied some Gummi Pflege to the door seals. Great stuff. Using it for years and has kept the seals soft and prevents the doors from sticking in winter. :)

Replaced the motors in my door lock actuators on 3 of the 4 doors, have working remote locks for the first time in 3 years. Dealer quoted me $1000 to get them all done, my cost, $20 on ebay and 4 hours of my time. Thanks to the forums here for the info. Still was not easy but the locks have never worked better.

Good work man. I also apply that stuff yearly. I learned about it from the bimmer forums. Good stuff.

My OCD won't allow for that, lol.

I spent probably too much time trying to refub a set of WE calipers today. I snagged them last week for $16 each, they looked like they were on the main deck of the Titantic.

45 minutes for each one in a blast cabinet got them cleaned up pretty well, then I cleaned and spray bombed w/ a quick dry equipment paint in satin black, it's what I had on hand beside a white appliance epoxy paint.

Once the paint flashed over I tore them down and replaced the seals/dust boots. I found 1 piston that wasn't playing nice so I hit with a scotch brite pad to clean up some crud. The seal kit I used was a Centric brand from Rock Auto. It was rubbish, pure and simple. The dust boots are a different shape compared to the OE and the spring clip has very little lip to grab a hold of, I doubt that these dust boots will last very long. I might postpone using the calipers and just find a Toyota seal kit.

After wanting on of these trucks since I was a teenager, I finally bought one!

I ended up with a Silver 1998 4Runner Limited with only 175K on the clock. It had the best looking carfax out of all that I ended up running and it wasn't really close. 90K service and 120K done by Toyota. Its been out of Toyota's care for only the last 20K. The sweet old lady who owned it most of its life kept about 2 inches worth of maintenance records.

So I can officially say I reset my EFI today.

PS, I've been a part of car forums since the 90's and have lurked here for a while now. Wow, what an amazing resource this place is. You all are easily the most active and comprehensive car forum I've ever seen. You all have my great thanks. Knowing there was such massive support behind this thing made finding the right truck so much easier.

2000 4R 2WD Replaced the drive shaft

Developed a vibration at 60-75 and I could tell it wasn’t tires. Too constant and timed with rpms. Few Googles later and I realized that this is a design fault. Apparently a rubber inner sleeve gives way causing issues plus neither of the U-joints can be lubed. Hmmmm. Sounds like planned obsolescence to me! Dealer wanted $678 for the part. A few more Googles later found an OEM for $420 shipped. Bought 2 new tires too. Googled tutorials and found how simple it is to do the job. 1 hour and she rides like new with 217,700 miles on her. Ha. Love my 3rd Gens. Old shaft? Both U-joints stiff as a board and inner rubber shot. Go figure.

Make sure pinion bearing doesnt move up and down also, will need to be in neutral. I just got a new shaft to replace my 300+k one.

I might have missed the details elsewhere, but where did you get that? What brand is it? Mind sharing price? I would like to do this someday for one with easily obtainable and replaceable parts.

What part of MI are you trucking through?

225k miles so she is still a baby

Finally got a chance to install the arb bumper and winch that have been sitting in my garage for the past 6 weeks. What a pain to do solo! Can't decide if I want to do anything about the gap from the body lift or not

Did you reclocking your winch to make reaching the freespool handle easier to access?

Looks awesome!
I just bought my first 4R(2002 LTD), and an ARB Bull Bar bumper/Warn winch will be my first mod.

ETA: How did the body lift cause the gap?
