What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Today was an investigation into why the 4Runner was throwing a P0171 code, and the discovery that the previous owner was kinda... Sloppy about working on the truck. Missing clamps on the air intake, filthy PCV valve that was clogged, and a MAF that looked like the desert. Cleaned PCV, butterfly, MAF, and reinstalled everything with some standard hose clamps. I'll look for OEM Toyota clamps the next time I'm in a pull-apart yard.

Tip for cleaning the MAF: Take the whole damn airbox out, and apply a real screwdriver to those two little screws; you can't help but strip them, trying to get them out with a 90-degree screwdriver and the assembly in the truck. Remove the airbox, which is only 3 12mm bolts and a wire connector, then take the MAF out of its housing. When you use a real screwdriver on those two little buggers, and can apply some real pressure, they won't cam out and strip the Phillips head.

I don't have my FSM, yet, but I'm pretty sure that the advice it's gonna give us is to do it like that. If not, well... Consider this a tip.

I replaced those 2 little stinking 99+ maf screws with little allen bolts because the phillips head screws are annoying.

Didn't drive mine today. Sad me is sad because I miss doing that. Got shipping notification for the new head gasket set, just gotta finish cleaning up the block and heads and junk. Also going to do the oil cooler seals and hoses while half the engine is missing- the not there kind, not the bad-running kind.

No more pics? All good with the belt, water pump and the rest of the parts?

I kept the screws to justify spending $$$ for some good JIS screwdrivers.....

Took her on an Elk hunt last week. For back and checked my LBJ's....barely hanging on by 3 threads on my passenger side! Too close! Threw a free replacement Moog in for now. Getting ready to order OEM and replace both Moogs ASAP.

Holy smokes dude I just saw someone in a Tacoma pulled over on the side of the highway with a LBJ failure a couple weeks ago. Tire was all in the fender, it looked bad..

Where, pray tell, did you get those here in the US? I'd love to have access to the Japanese tool market, and just buy what you need to work on Toyotas...

Belts/hoses/tb/water pump/ thermostat last year (figures, ha), valve covers and knock sensor pigtail somewhat recently...
I am racking the rickety old brain trying to think of things I'd kick myself for not doing when I've got this much exposure so thanks for some suggestions.

So far the oil cooler maintenance, getting the injectors cleaned, the ground from engine to firewall needs to be replaced, clean up some of the wiring, some of those nearly 23 year old hoses and stuff.....
always up for suggestions!

Spray pattern pic?...I'll be cleaning up that dirt n' crud....

That sounds you have covered it all though I replaced as many hoses as I could the other year when replacing an injector. Heads straight?

I got an estimate for the mechanical repairs needed from an old lady running a stop sign and hitting the RF tire/wheel and running board. So far on the estimate- new steering rack, wheel bearing, CV axle and a wheel. The other persons insurance adjuster is already playing the " it's an old truck w/ 200K + miles.." over the phone. This is going to get ugly, quickly.

Well, first serious snow of the season (it's about 3 weeks late though) so I got it stuck in 4WD again... I had cleaned up the transfer case switches a couple of weeks ago and thought I had it licked. Guess not. May have to order those switches as I don't have a wrecked truck to salvage from.

At least we had the plows and sanders ready to go at work!

More motivation to get the 4th gen back on the road so I can take the 3rd down and do some serious work to it...

Find an independent adjuster in your area, and retain them. The last time I had to argue with an insurance company, that's what I did. By the time he was done with them, they were grateful to write me a check for a couple of grand more than I paid for the vehicle...

As he said to me at the time, "You don't do this every day. I do, and they know it...".

Adding a couple JIS cross-head screwdrivers to my tool box has been the best addition I've made in a while.

Is there a list somewhere of all the JIS screws Toyota uses on the 4Runner, so as not to buy an entire set of things you'd never use?

One thing I wish the tool companies would figure out is that companies like Toyota and BMW typically only use a fairly limited assortment of fastener head sizes, and if they'd break out a set of tools that were brand-specific in this regard...? It'd be a hell of a lot easier. I don't think I've ever used a bunch of the sockets in my boxes, working on Toyotas. I know there's a list out there, somewhere, because I've been told there is, but actually finding it to use?

You basically only need the equivalent of a Phillips #2. Other screws are used on 'non-serviceable' parts, but you won't have to mess with those often. Sometimes Toyota uses larger JIS cross-head fasteners on engine parts, but the 5vz isn't one of those engines.

Just often enough, you'll need that 13mm or 15mm socket that you will be kicking yourself if it is missing from your box. Oh, and US, German and Japanese manufactures use different sub-sets of bolt/nut sizes... Don't get me started on the German love of triple-square and external torx fasteners too.

Just had the fun of talking to my local NAPA shop about whether or not they can get me JIS drivers... LOL. The counter guy knew nothing about the issue, didn't even know they existed, and another customer chimed in with "I thought they were Reed & Prince screws...", while another guy said he thought Toyota used something called "Frearson".

I'm standing there going "WTF? I've been working on cars since I was a teenager, I'm 54 now, and this is the first time I've heard of any of these...?!?!?".

Amazon. The place you need to go is Amazon. Search for: Vessel Megadora 980 Impacta P2x100 #2 Cross Point

(or just JIS screwdriver to find more options)

If you are only going to get one, get that one.
