What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Started my cargo drawer system build this weekend. I thought I had all the material but I was wrong. I will be able to do a good bit of the work on it this week but will have to wait till next weekend to get the front long compartment boxed in.

Hoping to keep the weight lower than the 3/4" plywood boxes.

Finally replaced the 12+ year old Alpine head unit with something a little more modern. New one is a Pioneer AVH-2440NEX and I replaced the cigarette lighter with a USB outlet.

Installed a full set of Weathertech mats

I was there January 2018. I ended up replacing the rack and outer tie rods. It was the best repairs I have done on my 4Runner. The rig handles much better with a new OEM rack and now it should be ready to go for another 250k miles leak free.

Picked up an 02 Sport Edition a couple weeks ago. Yesterday tackled the rear window key switch that fell down inside the tailgate. Fixed. With generous use of JB Weld, it won't happen again.

Put a new o-ring on the dipstick, the old one was so brittle it disintegrated as soon as I touched it. Hopefully no more leaks at the bottom of the motor:

Swapped all my overhead/interior lights for LEDs i got on ebay. About $6 total for both domes and maps... bright as hell now.

Also got under the car and greased the slip yolks/etc. That was messy since my grease gun canister popped loose in the middle

Autozones was the same basically. It was $120 ($40 off), after taxes took it to $130ish. I dont have an advance near me and autozone is right down the street.

Yesterday I popped out the cluster to replace the intermittent 'O/D off' light bulb. Easiest fix in a while. I've been calling around some local shops for the T-belt service,prices are high but still cheaper than me renting shop space for a weekend and paying for a rental car.

I also test drove a '09 FJ crusier as a possible replacement for the 3rd gen. After a 20 minute test drive the 'runner is safe for now, I couldn't stand the interior of the FJ.

Hmm, what pointed you to that gasket? When I look at my engine at the bottom front, it looks like it's been leaking for years because the grease is so thick. I was thinking oil pan gasket, but this could be one of the culprits now that I think about it.

Not today but two days ago installed a new radiator. 17 years, 181k miles on the original. Met its end over the weekend.

Today I will he headed over to the dealership to purchase and replace the radiator cap.

Hmm, what pointed you to that gasket? When I look at my engine at the bottom front, it looks like it's been leaking for years because the grease is so thick. I was thinking oil pan gasket, but this could be one of the culprits now that I think about it.

I wish I had taken a picture, but I started seeing more and more oil sludge on the front part of the motor right above the oil pan. I cleaned that whole area meticulously a few months ago when doing the timing belt, and I have new valve cover gaskets, and everything higher up was dry. So this seemed to be a likely culprit, even more so when I realized how deformed and hard the old o-ring was.

I haven't driven it much yet since then, so I'm not sure that this fixed, but it certainly can't hurt. Easy to remove and replace.

New Tires

Got new tires again!

I was not happy with the set I put on 4 months ago. The shop stood behind them and gave me a good upgrade deal for new ones.

I went with Yokohama Geolander A/Ts this time. Too soon to tell how they will be but my immediate gut says they are better than the old ones. The shop did a road force balance and seems to have done a great job. Two tires have 1 oz each and two have less. I have never had so little balancing weight on this 4runner before. Happy about that.
