What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

I replaced the rear shocks and springs on my 2wd T4R. I used factory Toyota springs and some new Bilstein shocks that I found in the classified section here.

What a difference! I should have done this years ago. It sits several inches higher now and doesn't hit the limit stops every time I hit a bump. Only downside is that I can now tell the front struts need replacing as well.

Took on the P0420 by the horns today. New O2 and A/F sensors and cats. I kept the original rear cat since it only looked like it was plugged up by the grenaded front cat. The honeycomb material in the rear cat look in tact, so I might try to clean it and sell it, or keep it as a backup.

No codes yet, but I'll have to confirm that it's gone after 200 miles or so. Truck is also louder and the distinct 5VZ-FE exhaust rumble has returned. Anyone dealing with this issue should consider doing this if a 3rd Gen has more than 200K miles. There likely won't be any other fix if you're certain that there are no exhaust leaks or the sensors are new. You can see the original cats below with 272,000 miles on them. I bought my truck in January with 268K on the odometer and can't believe I let myself drive 4K miles with the cats in such bad condition.

All that gray stuff from the floor was from the front catalytic converter.

New aftermarket catalytic converters.

What brand converters did you go with?

And disco'd the electrical as well...

I got a "slightly" used RTT at the REI garage sale this morning. I looks a bit odd up there but I'm sure that I'll get used to it.

Maybe this will motivate me to find a small economic DD car.

Pick and pull way out in The Wack has a white one but they won't tell me if it has a fender. Gateway in langley has 30+ of them but no white ones!!! Maybe I'll have to resort to car-part.com but shipping a fender must be outrageous.

I feel your pain. I've heard Gateway is a treasure trove but they know the value of what they have. My son rear-ended a truck last Winter, and do you think I could find a white Corolla with an intact front bumper cover and hood?? He ended up with an evergreen hood and front bumper! I did rattle can the hood (thank god it was flat white) but didnt bother with the bumper... Good thing it wasnt metallic, as its impossible to match.

BTW, I see you're from N Van. I grew up in N Van. our home was across from Montroyal Elementary and I graduated from Handsworth.... some of my friends went to Carson...

Everything looked good except some deposits in the third intake from the firewall. All the others looked nice and clean. Anybody know what would cause this or if I should be concerned? photo below

I agree with Leon, zero concern, the deposits in the intake plenums are normal. Eventually you will need to clean or replace your IAC and PCV - those are the common sources of oil in the intake.

Don't forget to retorque the valve cover bolts after the first 500-1K miles, and every year or so; the rubber under the VC washers harden over time. Also recheck torque on the throttle body bolts/nuts or you will weep oil from the TB/intake seam eventually.

I used the Magnaflow direct fits. Both come with a 5 year limited warranty, and CARB compliant for those in the People's Republic of California.

MGF 447192 for the front.

MGF 447225 for the rear.

My catalyst monitoring system says OK and no P0420 to be found. Seems to be working for now.

Thanks man. I did replace the PCV and grommet when I did the vc gaskets. And thanks for the tip on re-torqueing the bolts! I'll definitely be doing that. A couple of the vc bolts were so lose when I went to take them off I could have turned them with my fingers.

Replaced Radiator and heater core. Radiator a piece of cake, the heater core, not so much.

I've been slacking. After the stuff that was going on here, I kind of faded away for a few months.

Recent updates to the 3rd gen:
- Windshield replacement
- Front windows were tinted to 35% to match the factory rears
- Installed some rear Husky Liners due to children...
- Did an oil change and grease job tonight (did the 4th gen earlier this week and I didn't have enough Mobil 1 to do the other truck.. lucky for me it was on sale for $27 a jug (4.73L) earlier this week, so I stocked up!)

Now it's sitting on the battery tender in the garage while the 4th gen holds car seats and does daily driver duty.

Time to order some suspension parts!

Yeah Gateway really saved me with this restore build. Their prices are decent, not too bad but as you say they know the value of what they have. They hooked me up pretty good.

I'm on Jones Ave just up from the Upper Levels. A little ways away from you but not too far.

I gutted the rear interior panels to start attacking my rust repair this weekend. Anything I should look at while the panels are all out? I fixed my rear window wiring, and I know I have a clogged rear spray tube, and several body holes.

Replaced rear axle seals and bearings with a new Harbor Freight 20 ton press I picked up on sale last week. After watching @timmythetoolman video a few times and picking up the new axle tool from Duane things went real smooth. Thanks [MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] and [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] . The one thing that threw a wrench in to the whole mix was getting the drivers side brake line reattached... That added 1.5 hours to the job.
