The 3-in-1 mirror cover is an aftermarket item from japan and you’ll need to import those too. Quality is almost oem. I decided to add a little bit of silicone around the back of the lights but don’t think it needed it. They’re also pretty pricey but they offer accurate paint match!

So you basically use the internals from the JDM mirrors in your USDM mirror? In other words, if I have white mirrors, and buy JDM black mirrors, I won't need to do any painting because I'll swap the internals into my mirrors? And also I'd want to buy the JDM mirror of the same shape as my current mirror?

And just to confirm, this swap gets you the retract capability and turn signals?

oil change and filter, not sure ive been on the forum since moving to Alaska in may, crappy internet and cell service where I am now, surprised its working now
other than that.. crusied through and camped in denali with the 4runner, .been fishing on the Yukon, dahl, cheena and last week on the chitna...had to tow a 22 foot sjx boat back from chitna for 7 hours...4 runner did great ...been deep see fishing in seward ( with my oldest son who has a charter)
building a two story with a garage below and my living space up above, with my full rack haul lots of materials, more than I thought I would, but only when my sons taco is not available ( my youngest son and family who lives outside in the mountains of Fairbanks, well me too now)
so really have not done much with the 4runner lately, or done much since retiring in March
oh and three weeks ago bought a 9wt fly rod...let me see, 48 salmon and 2 kings ago

How do you take the metal support part out of the mirror? Mine was hit by the PO and broke. They then put it back together rigid with screws and I want to replace that part.

Tired to program a couple of key fobs to my son's 2000, noticed that the actuators are about dead. I called the dealer the other day, gave them the VIN and they said it had keyless. Couldn't find the little box I've seen mentioned in the forum. Tried some Toyota link, input VIN there and it doesn't mention keyless entry in the options. So I'm guessing it doesn't have it. I really don't know what to believe.

If your 4R has the immobilizer (black plastic and metal key, "security" light just above the AC controls that blinks normally and goes out when the key is inserted) ~ then you Probably have the Toyota factory installed (vs the more aftermarket-like dealer installed) version. Those control units are found in the tailgate area. Most folks just go ahead and buy a remote, then try to program. The one you're looking for has an FCC code of HYQ1512Y and the image of a window on the bottom button. You have 3 main options, 100% OEM, OEM electronics in an aftermarket housing and 100% aftermarket. The only complaints I've seen were all about the 100% aftermarket units (I have 2 OEM and one OEM w/ aftermarket housing that all work perfectly).

Be aware that you'll need to get into programming mode for any/all new remotes. Meaning that if you buy one to test, find it works and then want to add more, you'll have to do it all again. I'd say it's reasonably certain that you have the keyless entry, so if you want 2 then buy 2 right away.

There are some "tricks" to getting into programming mode. The biggest is that the actuators work better when cold, so trying first thing in the morning is what worked for me. The next is that you can replace the motor within your current actuators, I seem to remember those being ~$7/each (there's a thread or 8 about that). Some people who were only having issues with the drivers door, were able to "assist" with the key in the lock and moving the lock that way.

Sadly, there's no way to program the things from Techstream (dealer software, you can get a copy from Amazon for about $30, or China for about $15) for the 3rd gen.

Fortunately the '00+ are a lot easier. No screws to remove, you just pry at the bottom of the mirror, and pull out.

As you can see below, there are two hooks on top, and two tabs at the bottom that snap in place. So to remove, pry out at the bottom, then swing it out to unhook the upper hooks. Then you can unscrew and remove the motor assembly, though you'll still need to disassemble the connector as stated above.

Went to the dealer, $18 later all black screws arrived and the heads already looked beat up. If you like the matching brown, and don’t want them to look like shit right out of the bag, then I think 99Problems had the best plan of attack.

A lot of the dealer stuff has been transitioned to neutral colors or gray for the 3rd gen 4runners. I tried to order some oak parts when I first got it, and they all arrived gray.

Son and I finished up his $100.00 Ebay roof rack, add $50.00 of Rustoleum truck bed liner, some white paint and my vinyl cutter and boom it's done. Oh and $10.00 of great stuff. Not to bad, he loves it.

Did the TBU yesterday, Callahan eBay caliper rebuilds in black powder coating, Toyota rotors/pads/shims. Bedding them in I was loving the braking.

Unfortunately the Russell speed bleeders do not fit the 13WL calipers, much smaller hole, despite the Russel website listing the same as for stock 4runner calipers. I did find that by raising the capture bottle on a stool and having a loop of tubing well above the bleed screw, air bubbles would congregate there and not travel back to the caliper.
