Project Moonshot

I drove Artemis, my 1997 T4R SR5 5spd, to work today ~100 miles round trip. She's on a return trajectory from the moon with 419K on the clock. Just replaced the water pump, timing belt, tensioners etcetera on Thursday. Full disclosure: she's new to me so I can't claim responsibility for the mileage nor do I know if the engine has ever been replaced.

I'm new to the forums and haven't owned a Toyota since the mid nineties. I live in the DFW area and look forward to becoming part of the community online and locally.

Quick question, I have a 2000 T4R with 5100s and OME springs with 15 inch wheels. I’m looking to replace the Wheels but not the tires since I had already bought new falken wildpeak At3s. Any suggestions on wheels? Or no 15 inch wheel would clear the calipers.

Thanks Colin! I really like the Pro Comps too, I've got 265-75-16's on them. Don't think I'll go any bigger.

And yes, I'm trying to make 2020 the year of the 4Runner - I got so sidetracked last year with all the hood strut and ultragauge development work, that I hardly had any time for any projects on the truck. This year I'm making a resolution to be good to it, so in addition to the shocks and wheels, I'm planning at least on a Satoshi grille and paint for the peeling Limited cladding. Hopefully more .

4x bumper painted and mounted, winch mounted and wired up, winch solenoid hidden so controller plugs near hood release, wired up led turn signals, trimmed fender liner, and drank beers.

Skid Plate with Lift Question

My new to me 3rd gen did not have the OEM skid plate but I have them from a previous vehicle. I have the adjustable Bilstein 5100 lift at 2" right now and an ARB front bumper. I haven't checked the fit yet to see if there will be any problems but I have been looking around to find this answer...

Does the OEM skid plate fit with a 2" lift and front differential drop kit in place?

I am cleaning and painting my old skid plates before I try to get underneath and check fit so hoping to get clarity beforehand. Also saving up some cash for new skids like CBI or Shrockworks. THANKS!

Flushed the PS system (had clear/PS fluid in the reservoir) and removed the reservoir to clean the screen. Word of warning, don't be a cheapskate on this job. I didn't want to run into town (half-hour round trip) so I "made do" with what I had on hand... hose that was a little short and no hose barb, just the next size down that fit snugly in the ID of the 3/8oem. Well, of course that separated and hosed the entire engine bay, and me, in ATF.

I spent WAY more than the 30 minutes it would have taken for me to just go buy what I should have, to just clean up. Nevermind the experience of consuming nasty old fluid (turns out the PO just "topped off" with PS fluid, the original ATF was still mostly in there, but had turned to mud).

Sheesh, I should know better than to half-arse things like this. They almost never work out and you're left worse off than when you started. Oh well, done now.... last of the fluids, last "baseline" job to do, truck is now fully serviced... wife's thinking about dumping her 2018 Mazda3 and DDing the 4runner (we both hate the Mazda, a most unremarkable and boring, but self-inflated ego feeling, car). Hate to have just tossed $6k+ away to drive a car for 2 years, but that money's spent and I'd like to just move forward.

I know the feeling, we've all done it at one time or another and paid the price in time and money. I spent a Sunday morning cleaning up after a tech that was too lazy to clean a customers Jeep after installing a new power steering pump that leaked all over his freshly painted garage.

I tend to hold onto vehicles for a very long time myself (98 Honda for 19 yrs, 2001 Audi for 15) so I can sympathize regarding the Mazda. However if it doesn't fit the bill or use case you're probably better off.

I don't think a stock skid will fit with a diff drop. I know mine didn't.

Sold it. Sadly, I am out of the 4runner world for now. Hopefully, in a few years when my kids start driving, I can convince them that a 3rd gen should be their first vehicle of choice. Thanks for the help along the way.

I lost #6 completely. I'm hoping it's ignition related and not injection.
New plugs (only 25k miles on what's in there), coils, and wires en route.
I'll do injectors, VCGs, and PCV all together if the ignition overhaul doesn't sort the misfire.

They will fit, but you’re going to need a couple spacers in your rear most bolts.

Having the fuel pump, fuel sender, and a few other parts swapped out as part of my fuel tank refresh project. Can't wait to have a fuel gauge that makes sense.. haha

Took my boy and a bunch of friends up rattlesnake canyon out by johnson valley. we had a crazy mix of cars from my old lifted turbo subaru to my friends fully built truck that started life as a 2wd single cab. overall a great trip, no one broke anything and the only vehicle that was temporarily immobilized was the full size dodge but we got him unstuck no problem.

Does the OEM skid plate fit with a 2" lift and front differential drop kit in place?

my toytec diff drop came with the spacers for the skid and hardware with a longer shank (due to the spacers).

one weird thing i noticed is it looks like they used a differnt pitch on the hardware with the longer shanked bolts (the thread pitches compared werent the same). im assuming they used standard size bolts to save $$ on hardware and for ease of availability. the bolts went in fine.

speaking of, i need to put my damn skid back on, but not until i get that stripped diff drain plug out!

Just finished repainting the 16" rims I copped at the boneyard...now the long wait for the clear coat to cure...
