What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Did some much needed fluid changes.

Power Steering Flush with Orilly Dex3 ATF. I don't feel like synthetic ATF is needed for this rig with 380k on the original PS Pump. I'm fighting a whine right now, and this seems to have quieted down at idle, but it's still there.

Oil Change - Used the Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic Blend in 5w/30. Add a 1/2 quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Engine purrs nicely now.

Bypassed rear heater - Noticed some rust on the outer part of the lines. I never use the heater anyway. This was a 5 minute job, I spent more time test driving to make sure my loop didn't leak.

Next month is the big one - Valve Cover Gaskets, all Vacuum lines, PCV Valve, and possible another timing belt kit if I pinpoint my whining noise to a bearing in the Timing belt area. OH and I'll probalby throw in a new Rack Guide as well.

you can always sell the supercharger separately and recoup your cost.

I've set appointments to look at Tundras tonight and tomorrow after work.
I reckon the 3rd gen is going up for sale in Feb.

Window went crinkly crack

Didn't drive Monday and that night it fell to -48.5C. Walked past the truck at about 6pm and it was fine. In the am I walked past it and the driver's door window was completely shattered but still in place. Completely spider webbed. No tracks in the snow, 1/2 mile from the road. Taped it up thoroughly. Last night -48C. I used the sat phone to call the nearest glass place (200 mile round trip) to arrange a replacement.
This window has only been in the truck 6 weeks.
Manufacturer speculated that an air bubble might have been in the glass because sometimes it happens and the window makes it through tempering but develops micro flaws.
Wacky stuff. I guess.
Glad I had lots of good tape.
I'm still paying the bill though ......
Sometimes it's surprisingly costly when you make the official list and find you are, that day, the eighth coldest place on planet Earth.
A kitchen window cracked on Tuesday night, but that's another story.

Stumbled across it on Craigslist, Charlotte NC, merely days after it was listed. It is indeed new - never installed. The guy bought it shortly after they were discontinued by Toyota. He'd shelved it for eight years and never installed it.

I had a lengthy chat with the dude. He was a big fan of Texas Ace and had planned on Meth injection - hence the 2.1 pulley. I'm still on that fence.

He knew what he had was now quite rare and advertised it as a savings of $500 (post price hike) over the current non TRD branded Magnuson, with a free URD pulley. Personally, I'd have preferred a 2.2. He, however, was in the camp of - in for a penny - in for a pound.

I know enough now to realize that to run a 2.1 is going to require more equipment, effort, sweat & dollars.

While not a exceptional deal, I concluded he was warranted in asking $3k, which is what I paid. He'd received a few low-ball offers and was planning on advertising here next. I couldn't resist the rare opportunity and jumped on it.

Maybe I too will list it on CL some eight years from now...

Good Lord Man, where you, Yakutsk? That's -55 degrees Fahrenheit for crying out loud. Reminds me of my time, 25 years ago, working in Tatarstan. I don't believe we ever quite hit -48.5C; but we surely surpassed C/F parity @-40 (C or F) many times. Cold enough, thanks.

Underfoot snow sings when tread upon. Tools that shouldn't - snap. Ice fog grows crystals upon all surfaces. Icicles attach to nose hairs. Beers freeze before one's eyes.

And, evidently, 4runner windows spontaneously shatter.

Not surprised. Suggest you relocate.

Durn shame he was so smart, but the opportunity to pick this up is not worth saving a few hundred and there are not many brand new TRD SC's out there.

I hear you on the 2.1. I really want more HP/TQ but do not want to sacrifice dependability and reliability.

Yikes. Have you thought about going with a used Toyota replacement glass? I want to say it is less prone to cracking.

Might wanna try replacing the o-ring in between the reservoir and the pump, it could be rock hard and letting air in. Or it could be one of those o ring or seal on the pump.

Mines did the same and a new pump to reservoir o-ring (9030111016, 1999-2002) and a screen cleaning solved it.

Long time Runner owner...lurked long enough on this site and wanted to join to share whatever knowledge I can contribute for all that I have gained on here. Owner of a pretty clean 97 Desert Dune limited bought new in TX and moved to Oregon as a teenager...I'm the 3rd owner I believe...bought from Beaverton-Tigard Toyota on my way up to Seattle from Medford after looking for several months. Had an 88 I went full blown on (3.4 swap, solid axle swap, tube doors, custom bumpers, tire carrier, etc)... Want to keep this one tasteful and more "stockish".
