What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

I went with this setup specifically for my future plans.

I've seen a lot of guys who run stock bumpers with TRD fronts and 906 backs (check out Ryance39's or Speedy's build). It looks great, even or maybe a bit of forward rake, they say the ride is great, maybe a bit squishy in the back when loaded down. You'll see I have a pretty aggressive rake (its close to 2 inches higher in the back right now), but that was planned. 1. I dig the forward leaning stance aesthetics. 2. I've heard the 890s will settle about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch over the first six months and 3. I plan on loading down the back a bunch with a sleep platform, gear, and a rear steel bumper with a swing out arm to carry a full size spare and gas. That's a good amount of weight that will be better supported by 890s than 906s (if my research has been correct). I really dig the fat lip bumper and don't plan on going with a high clearance/aftermarket front bumper so that lift should maintain its height.

As of right now, the ride is fantastic compared to stock. The thing was so stiff when I got it, every little bump was a jolt, felt like a sports car. Now its smooth. Maybe a bit more side to sway at high speeds (always going to have some with a lift), but the ride is so much nicer and when I lean into a corner it handles way better.

Hope this helps. Also - don't try to reuse the top plate. Took me two full days when I could have just got them pre-assembled, skipped all the spring compression, and only would have cost me $40 bucks more.

This is incredibly helpful, thanks. Sounds like the exact route I have been planning on going down, almost to the detail. The only thing I was thinking about doing differently was getting a steel front bumper, but the rear with a swingout and fuel cans is what I'm 100% sure about. The front bumper looks good blacked out, and it's fine considering (unlike the rear) it's properly mounted to the frame.

I was thinking the same about the top plate, but I haven't seen a site that includes pre-assembly as an option with those TRD springs. Do you mean just order everything separately and have a shop assemble them?

Correct, can't find a website that would give you 5100s with TRDs (but double check Wheeler's - also go to wheeler's cause they change out tundra 5100s with a 3/4 bearing that fits our 4runners), but just buy a pair of top plates so that you can either assemble yourself or have a shop do it without having to dissemble the stock ones for no reason other than to reuse that part. (also gives you a better chance at reusing those parts/selling them.

Gotcha. Yeah, I was planning on going through Wheeler's. They seem to have the most information regarding the use of the Tundra gear on the 4Runners. And by most I mean that they at least mention it. Ha!

Thanks for the info. Helps to give me a really clear path to follow now!

My 97 finally blew up on me. It popped the drivers side head gasket on cylinder 4. Unfortunately it blew 1000 miles from home just outside of boise Idaho:dammit: it made it until 365,000 miles though. During the tear down I pulled the valve covers off and was incredibly surprised with how the heads/valve train looked. I have only used mobil 1 full synthetic for the last 100,000 and changed it religiously at 5000-7500 miles. I swear by the stuff now.

Looks great. Big fan of Mobil 1 High Mileage in the 5w-30, 10w-30 and 10w-40 flavors, great cleaning abilities. :bravo:

Did the valve cover gaskets, new ngk plugs, wires and boots. Replaced all the orings on the injectors, new crush washers on the rails.
Thanks

Oh and I pulled an engine out for a customer today. Head gaskets went out at 365k and he opted for a low mileage replacement

Installed some StrongArm rear hatch struts made for added Gobi ladder weight. Finally! The door flys up fast and doesnt stop until the end. Even with the window rolled down it will open. :)

Strangely enough, I fixed the mysterious misfire on my 01 Limited's 4th and 6th cylinder by simply swapping the coil packs in the 1st and 3rd cylinder :heh:

Took her wheeling for a little bit and shes running beautifully, now just to get a set of valve cover gaskets

220,3xx and still rolling
