What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Installed Alpine ilx-w650...

...and back up camera. I had a tough time fishing wire through the tailgate - and I mean hours of a tough time. Finally, after taking layers of skin off the back of my hands and a wire hanger, I was able accomplish it :happy:.
I used an Auto-Vox Cam 6 back up camera - cable it came with was long enough, so no extension needed, but it's connector to the camera is larger than an rca so I had to cut the rubber "tunnel" connector between the truck and the tailgate to run it through (something I saw 'Timmy the Toolman' do). However, my tapping it back together wasn't as clean has his. Think I will try to replace or at least redo it.
I also installed the micro bypass for the parking brake.
Finished it all about 12:45 am, still need to test and tune in the phone and I ordered a Batige Single Square port USB connector so I can take advantage of the USB port on the Alpine.

Hey, can you post a link to which video that was? I think I will be needing to do this very soon and Tim has a billion videos now so it's difficult to find some of the obscure small fixes like this

It was actually in regards to repairing the rear hatch wiring, but I remembered it when I was trying to stuff that camera lead through it.

tried to remove stripped bolts in skid plate

been a while since i've had skid plates off and the two center ones heads are trash, guess i'll have to drill them, what a pia. I did manage to change oil/filter and drain/refill tranny (amsoil)

Lost the fat flip and now part of the cool kids club. All I'm missing is my grille (on the way) and my tire carrier and build is almost "complete" - until I finally shoot for a locker that is! Gonna fit some perforated aluminum to cover up the front and make it look a little cleaner
Bumper and fab work was all done by my buddy Luis, believe this was one of the first he ever made from well over a two years ago. Sells a lot of them now on the 4runners of Washington page on FB.
Also today my CV boots slipped off at some point on the trails and splattered grease everywhere, but it's all yellow and heavily contaminated with water, so in a way I'm glad it did cause now I finally have an excuse to get new axles :heh:

Decided that since the mechanic was already going to be doing the suspension, I ordered 2 new OEM lower ball joints and the flanged bolts.


Looking back, so far I have:

$4000 - Price of 4runner

$2132.22 - Brakes and Control arms

$160.31 - Fluids and exhaust repair

$75 - ECGS Bushing

$85 - Driver side CV Axle

$88 - MAF

$125 - Replacement Stock Air Box (Had a crappy Cold Air Intake on it)

$15 - Upper Air Hose

$299 - OEM lower ball joints

$572 - New springs, new bilstein 4600 shocks/struts

Not including labor on the instal of the ball joints or springs/shocks...

Around $7500 invested in this thing so far.

Id be lucky to get $6k for it if I sold it hahahaha.

That is an awful lot for brakes and control arms, did you get OEM right from a dealer or something? Should've been able to do it for $1000 or less, at least by my count

Help !!!

Hello all i have a 1998 toyota 4runner 2.7L
A check engine light came on P0120 throttle position sensor. I replaced the sensor with oem and checke engine light came back. I cleaned the mass airflow sensor , and same problem. I tested the circuit, found good power and found signal to be good. Found good. Ground. I did an ohms check from the power circuit to the ecm found 2.2 ohms. Found the wire had to much resistance. So i ran a wire from the throttle position sensor to ecm. Found the .7 ohms.
I started the truck and found check engine light came back, but with a different code. P 0450 evaporative emission control pressure sensor. Found the vapor pressure sensor share the same power and same ground as the throttle position sensor from the ecm. Do they both share the same power and ground from the ecm ?? I am lost ?? Some guidance will be appreciate it

Long time lurker mainly in the 6th Gen forums. Randomly came across this new to me '99 SR5 3.4 V6 with 224k for $4k in excellent condition. I needed something for camping, fly fishing, MTB, Winter...

Not new to building cars, but very new to building trucks! I'm super excited to learn something new about a proven platform if cared for.

Not enough post for a build thread yet. There are a few things done to it already from the previous 2nd owner.

Nice find for $4k! That would be a $7-8k car here in the Bay Area.
Is that an R32 in the garage?

Such is the life of owning an older car, lol. I always hate when I look at how much I've spent versus what it's worth.

I'm making progress on the front end and have officially deemed this operation scope creep.

Oh Dang! I knew it was a great deal in looking around at others in a similar year and higher mileage, I was seeing $6-9k as a range.

That's a '01.5 1.8T Golf (stock) but it's basically a 2.0T bored out stroker track only car at this point.

The Audi is 1 of 17 A4 Avants ever imported to the US, but needs a new motor which is about $12k to replace.

I'm super stoked on the T4R though...

I wasn't even looking at the time, a worker at my local gas station looked at my raggedy 2nd Gen and said "hey, I have a 4runner for sale....."

:wow: I had no idea people were asking that much for these anywhere. That's ridiculous! Given, these are some of the best SUV's ever made, but for a budget upward of 15 grand there's a large market available to people that includes much newer options than 20 year old vehicles.

That being said, I have no interest in any of those newer options. Third gen 4Runners for life for me!

Pricing has become nutty. I think bringatrailer has definitely influenced prices (aka the BaT tax), coupled with weird covid used car market.

Back on topic, I finally did the TBU and threw on braided SS brake lines this past weekend. I knew it was a something that I'll have wished I'd done sooner. And I was right. How nice to go down a hill and not feel like the front end's going to shake apart.

Pretty sure I also did something to at least one of the ABS speed sensors from stretching because one of the front wheels trips it (without the ABS light) when braking and low speeds. It's somewhat random when it does decide to engage (i.e. flex, low speed corners, straight line medium pedal pressure), so I'm going to pull the sensors and clean them just in case that may help.

Make sure you're holding the sensor in place while you tighten the bolt down, kids! The moment I looked at the passenger side sensor (the only one I was able to remove the other day) I could see how crooked it was, lol. Pulled it, cleaned it, lubed the o-ring, and put it back in (while holding the sensor side in place)... no more ABS slow speed braking activation!
