What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

at 305K miles I lost the seal on the rear axle passenger side. Pretty good service life. I have been wanting a Factory E-Locker for a while and it seems like a great time to do that. The adventure begins......

First axle the local yard located, I went to pick up and was the RUSTIEST axle I have ever seen. Also, it was not a Factory Locker so I did not accept it. They spent a month or so looking and couldn't find one with a 4:10 ratio.
I did some looking on line and found one in El Paso Texas. Shipped to my driveway for the same price the local yard wanted for me to pick up so I ordered. They delivered to my driveway right in front of my Runner. It was in great shape. Still had original factory paint and almost NO RUST. The gear oil looked very good when I drained to replace. Brakes and seals looked great too. Checked the electrical operation fine. Found out it was the WRONG RATIO at 4:30.

Well, it was too nice to send back. Installed with NEW White Line bushings and end links. Also NEW rear shocks. (2" Dobinson's lift on order).
I will have to go thru all my front end in the Spring when weather gets warmer.
Locker works great! Can't use 4X4 until I get the FRONT gear box ratio corrected.
I discovered the same thingo n my factory 5-spd elocker '99. When the diff developed a little bit of pinion bearing noise (~220K miles, not sure why, it was full of good oil) I got lucky and found a typical 4.30 locker in a local PnP junkyard and swapped that in.

And proceeded to drive it like that for about 4 or 5 months, including a 2 week trip out in Colorado and Utah with lots of offroading.

Not only did it drive pretty normally whenever 4WD was engaged (always in low traction situation), but I'd almost say it worked slightly better on tight turns, the front would sort of pull its way through a corner, pushing a bit less than normal. On some slick rock sections I got a few more chirps from the tires, but with everything correct, tires will chirp a bit on that stuff.

Eventually I checked because I *always* had to reverse to disengage 4WD) and found, D'OH! 4.10 in the front, 4.30 in the rear. I just swapped the front diff to a 4.30 as well, they're easier to find than another 4.10 rear locker.

Our roads are waaaaay over salted with brine.

We had a few days of snow and single digit temps, but today we got a sunny break with several hours in the 40s, so I hosed everything off with a pressure washer wand that angles past 90 degrees to really get up under and behind the frame, suspension, etc.

Ready for the next round of single digit temps later this week. Just wish they didn't use so much salt !!

You have to go colder or warmer... of course, colder and you're dealing with constant cracked windows from the sanded roads... and warmer, well... I had to turn my house AC on for 1/1/22 because it was over 80F inside with humidity closer to 90% (inside, was pegged at 99% outside).

very true, here salt would do little good as it just makes ice into water and then re-freezes in a short bit....so they use small rock pieces......called chip rock.....and in our household there is 5 vehicles....all with cracked windshields.....we call them" alaskan windshield" sometimes you will even see used cars that state....alaskan windshield. They start as a little rock chip...then when temps go extreme from outside adn your defroster on you just watch them spread .
tomorrow high -29 and a low of -35...not including the wind

but my 22 year old 4 runner that has spent its life in this town has zero rust

Picked up my Sherpa Matterhorn full length roof rack from UPS. They had them at a 15% discount for black friday sale. All in with a handful of T-nuts was $940. They have gone up to$1100 + tax now!

Repainted rear window spoiler wing thingy. It was previously all faded and nasty looking. Probably nobody but me noticed it, but it bugged me every time I looked at the truck. Popped it off, sprayed it with bedliner spray and put it back on. Sprayed the screws as well because they were silver and looked pretty lame against the black. Should have taken a "before" photo but didn't think of it in time. Will end up doing the same to the roof rack but may just tape it off instead of removing it, though.

Driver's seat belt.
Part # is: 7322035491E0

If you're a daily driver like me and have an old frayed seat belt, this is a high impact repair that makes an incredible difference in the quality of the driving experience.

Tools needed are a 10mm short socket, 14 mm short socket, trim tool, and JIS screwdriver for the floor trim.

Be careful not to yank too hard when you remove the old assembly near the floor because the yellow wire for the seat belt light doesn't have much slack and looks easy to break.

Pics: 1. Before, 2. Yellow Seat Belt Light Wire & Connector, 3. After

250 bucks, ouch...

I suppose it be the only realistic option consider it might be a test off patience to find a good condition used one from a junkyard...

does anyone know if you can swap the driver and passenger side seatbelts?

very ugly roads today...some of the worst in recorded history for here in my part of alaska...cops, news etc saying stay off the roads....stay home. well i am not that kind of person.... I did not need to go to town...but wanted to .....to test my rig and skills..grab some milk and stuff for an excuse....my kids think I am weird.
it was kind of a test .....but I went out on the road...my j shift 4wd and at one point used the locker today...
i had no issue....love this truck...im an old fart and have had many rigs in all kinds of weather.
btw....the only way my son could get out of his driveway was in his 2016 taco, 4wd low and his locker on...we live in the sticks

Drove from fairbanks to Anchorage yesterday. Roads are still terrible and the wind was ripping through wasilla/palmer. What tires do you run?

nice....... another alaskan....
this time of year I run blizzaks, when the snow is gone I run KO2's.
I heard the roads to/from anchorage are a mess and why the grocery stores are pretty low on things like milk and produce because the trucks are having issues getting from anchorage to fairbanks

If you're going all the way to Cortez, make sure you schedule a stop in Mancos for some beer (Mancos brewing). 30 years of beer tasting/brewing (including other countries) and she's one of my favorite brewers. I don't get that way often, but I always spend a few hundred on beer to bring home and nurse.

If not, then Del Norte has a reasonably good place too (3 barrel brewery), and their pizza ain't nothing to complain about either.

Condolences if you're going to Durango....

new idea for fog lights

picked up a set of motor cycle projector fog/highbeam lights they fit right into the factory holes now to come up with a new switch thats is an on/off/on to toggle between settings and turn off

Finally got around to fixing the 12v outlets. Without really looking into the issue, and since one of my outlets worked but the other three did not, I just assumed that the fuse-able links behind the outlets themselves had blown. I went ahead and ordered some on eBay.

But then after a quick look at the fuse blocks both under the hood and in the cabin, I saw the working outlet (circled in green in the photo) is on the “ACC” circuit along with the radio and clock, but the other three (circled in yellow in the photo, and the one in the cargo area) are on an isolated “PWR OUTLET” circuit under the hood.

It was simply a blown 15a fuse LOL. So now all my 12v outlets work and I’ve got some spare fuse-able links

This reminds me of when I thought I needed to replace my charcoal canister, but really only needed to fully plug in my evap pressure sensor. I need to actually identify the root cause by performing tests, and not just assume and starting throwing parts at issues! :)

EDIT: this link to fuse diagrams for 3rd gens might be useful to leave here. It seems accurate at least for 2000s.
