What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

other than the press and plates that come with it...did you use a "kit" that supplied "pushers" to get old bushings out and new in. Sorry for the lack of correct word for "pushers"
reason I ask is this summer I plan to replace all those bushings also..a few could use it...rest preventative...hey its 22 years old with miles...im 69 with miles

That was my thinking, too. After 26 years everything could use some attention. I'm 50 with some pretty hard miles. I'd happily pay over dealership prices for some new OEM parts if I could.

Other than the press and its plates, I bought a 6x6 1/2" steel plate from Amazon for $25, a press sleeve kit I bought a while back ($100 Ebay) in anticipation of buying the press ($80 Craigslist), a 6" vise ($145 Amazon) and a cold chisel for bashing the front control arms to make room for the rented bearing splitter ($25 Autozone), an assortment of sockets (mini-pushers), and a big pair of channel locks. Oh, and I bought a heavy duty ratchet strap for the rear arms. It may not have been necessary but I went with OEM for all front control arm bushings. I was paranoid about the squeaks. Everything else was Whiteline/ES.

Each time, everything went down exactly like in Tim's videos. I will say it would have been a ton easier if I'd had a buddy helping me.

Now, with all the new bushings and suspension parts, it's painfully obvious I need new tires. Thinking I'll go with Toyo A/T III but that's beside the point.

I didn't actually do anything other than spend money but man, what a difference!

All those times I'd taken off my tires and put them back on in the past year, I never noticed how rock hard they were. With all the updated suspension parts and Toyo Open Country A/T IIIs she rides like a 7 year old 4Runner!

Ordered two manual hub CV shafts from a local Toyota dealer (to make it easy to return cores). In February.

GREAT NEWS: They finally arrived!
BAD NEWS: I looked at them at the parts counter and one was a solid/ADD hub CV shaft, not manual hub. Lol.

So now we wait possibly another couple of months for a second manual hub CV shaft. I'm going to go ahead and assemble it on my truck with one new and one old shaft, and we'll have a spare (my wife's 96 has had manual hubs for a few years now).

On the plus side, they did accept an ADD shaft as a core. Nice to keep the old shafts that came with the junkyard manual hub setup as trail spares.

Ordered my COMs, received the radio and started modding my center console to mount the radio where the ashtray is

Wonder if the stock wiring is sufficient or if I should run a new circuit to the charger... the radio is getting its own fused circuit and dedicated cabling.

When I did mine I literally unplugged the female spade connectors from the socket and plugged my new outlet right into them. I’ve had no issues with excessive heat or anything, so I think that stock wiring is fine. Mine is only a dual usb though.

Not today but fairly recently I’ve tried to fix up some rust on the front of my 2000 4Runner
Took me a few Saturdays with a wire brush, but looks much better hopefully it lasts

Added an UltraGauge with a Spiker_Engineering mount.

Now I'm thinking 2 things:

 1. I wonder how long until it draws the attention of some punk who breaks my window to see if it's something he can sell.
 2. Now I need a Spiker Engineering phone mount.

Where will you mount the antenna? I've been thinking about doing this since I took the Technician exam a couple weeks ago. I hate talking to people though so I'm hesitant to make any new holes in case I change my mind.

You get your license or going rougue?

Yeah the wires can totally handle that. I think its a least at 15amps fuse and even if that one was pushing max 54watts like it claims( prob not) its only 4amps.

Yes on #2. The phone mount is the best 4Runner mod since the TBU. Except maybe the hood struts :D

Got back my re-valved Dobinson shocks, complete with special order shim stacks from Australia. Now for the ultimate test... will it soften the ride from the previous "shock absorbing is overrated" harshness? Stay tuned!

TBD on the antenna location. The obvious spot is fender/hood crease but I'm going to experiment with the roof rack area, too.

I'm studying for the Technician license and will use the radio for just GMRS until I do. This will give me an opp to learn to use/program the radio.

This interests me greatly. I'm assuming they were originally way too stiff. What's the shock and spring combo from Dobinson? How long did the revalve take? Did you have to pay for it to be revalved?

I originally bought these items:

C59-276 Front Coils
IMS59-50222 Monotube IFP Front Struts
C59-131 Rear Coils
IMS59-50225 Monotube IFP Rear Shocks

I found the ride to be very jarring. It was almost painful to drive, and certainly took all the fun out of it.

I waited a few months hoping things would settle in, but they didn't, or at least not much. So I pinged Mike at Exit Offroad, where I bought the parts. He told me there was not much he could do, and directed me to Dobinson USA.

It was not easy getting past the inane "customer service", but once I got through to David (who apparently runs the operation), he took charge. He asked me to send everything back, and covered the shipping. He said that he suspected that there was a wrong shim stack in my shocks (no idea why he thought that).

I still don't know exactly what transpired (I will ask him later), but the "right" shim stack had to be custom made and shipped from Australia, along with special bleed shims. He shipped the front units back to me as soon as they were completed; the rears are still waiting for the custom bleed shims.

During this time, I've been riding on OEM components, which were silk smooth (by truck standards). I already made up my mind that unless the re-valved Dobinsons were close to this ride, I'll find a way to get happy with OEM - I was not willing to give up this kind of comfort.

I put in the re-valved fronts today, and after a few miles, I feel that they are on par with the OEM ride, at least not noticeably harsher, which is a huge improvement from before. I'll wait for the rears to arrive before making final conclusions, but so far this is promising.

I did replace the rear Dobinson springs with OME 2906's, because I found the lift of the Dobinsons to be too high. And I had Dobinson replace the front 276 springs with 134's. They are the same spring rate, but the 134's have a little longer free length than 276's - not that it matters much since the front shock perches are adjustable.

Overall, the process didn't cost me anything, but the turnaround time has been about a month. I was willing to wait to get this fixed properly, so that was fine by me.

Here is the OEM height (left) and where I am now (right). I think this might be a bit too high, so I might bring it down an inch or so.

The wrong shim stack excuse sounds suspicious to me, but as long as the ride has improved then that’s all that matters. It could very well have been assembled wrong since I think you are the first person to have a negative review of them. (Granted there aren’t as many reviews as bilstein/OME/king/etc.)

4Runner Problems

Just trying to figure out what’s wrong with it. Just a bit of hesitation on acceleration and and when accelerating goes up to 3rpm sometimes. But besides that just enjoying the ride.

Did Seven Mile Rim, Metal Masher, and Kane Creek in Moab this week. Kane Creek is no joke. Barely made it through on 33's with a rear locker. Got stuck on the very last obstacle and had to be towed out of it. Beat up my skid plates and rock sliders a little. Glad I got the lil skips gas tank skid plate installed before i went because I landed hard on it. If it was stock my gas tank would have a major dent in it. Definitely the max my rig can do in its current form. If I wanted to do the harder trails I think i'd need 35's, a regear, and a front locker.
