What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Finishing up my pile of little PITA maintenance tasks that all got bundled together with the new steering rack and front diff.

- Passenger side motor mount. I broke the driver side mount a few years ago, bought both, but only replaced the driver side at that time. It's probably easier to do with the 1" body lift giving a bit more access through the passenger side wheel well. But still, not fun. Old mount was slightly separated around the edges, slightly sagged, but not too bad.

- New steering column lower rubber rag joint. Mine was really, really stuck on the old rack, I damaged it a bit getting it off there. And the rubber was a bit cracked. So I got a new one. It's finicky work on the other side of the frame, out of sight. The upper splined section only fits on one way, the lower (onto the rack itself) fits in ay direction. So I got it all neatly lined up and installed, and only then looked at the steering wheel and realized it was turned about 2/3rds of the way. Ahhh... I thought I'd left it straight ahead when I removed the rack, but that was then, this is now. So I got to redo that steering joint to get the steering wheel and front wheels more in sync (at least close enough that the tie rod ends aren't cranked way over to get everything straight).

And a new driver side lower ball joint. The LBJ's aren't that old, but this one had a split boot, and might as well swap it while it's half off already.

Then I stuck the CV stub shafts back into the diff. I'd left them attached to the hubs (since it's a fiddly bit of messing around to take them out of the manual hubs), and just unbolted the lower ball joints (the 4 smaller bolts) on both sides, and the tie rod ends, and swung the whole hub out to remove them. And this worked well going back in.

Where I discovered something that I sincerely hope is NOT a problem - the brand new Eaton/Harrop e-locker diff seems to be LOCKED. Both CV shafts are def linked to each other and turn together when turning the CV shafts or front driveshaft by hand. The Eaton e-locker is't like the Toyota e-lockers - there's no shifting mechanism that can hold it locked or unlocked, from my understanding it's just an electromagnet that energizes when the locker switch is on and pulls a pin back that allows the mechanism to lock itself after the front wheels have rotated relative to each other (in either direction). No 12V - no electromagnet, and when the wheels rotate again it will lock into the center 'unlocked' position.

Well, certainly no 12V going to it currently (I haven't connected the wiring yet) and it's locked. I'm hoping it's just new, a bit stiff, and was locked from ECGS testing it after assembly, and I just wasn't putting enough torque between the front wheels to get the locker to move. I'll try again when I put the wheels back on.

And good news, with the wheels on, it's just stiff, not actually locked. To stiff to reasonably get the left and right side to turn vs. each other by turning the CV shafts by hand, but with the wheels on you can get them to turn opposite of each other (with 4WD engaged).

Not sure if it will loosen up with use, or if they're just a bit on the stiff side by design.

But yay, not actually locked.

Redid the LBJs after being shipped the wrong ones and not noticing until I had already destroyed the original ones. Had to go with Moogs just to get it off of the Jack's, and drove with those for 4k miles. Peace of mind achieved!

Need more detail on this? How did you not realize they were the wrong ones until they were destroyed?

From internet pictures that looks great!

Did you do single stage or 2 stage? What brand of paint? Mind if I ask how much it cost? I'm thinking of doing this to my daily. It doesn't need to be show quality, but better than super bad peeling clear...

I used a local paint shop, they used a BASF single stage paint for me. I asked for 1 gallon sprayable. So with paint, activator and reducer it was $390. I nearly bought this kit but it would not have arrived in time.

I did a test fit of my new Pitman Outdoors PPI-PV203C AirBedz Lite air mattress in the back of the 4Runner. After emptying the cargo area, I lifted the rear seat bottoms, put the seat backs down and popped it in there. Fit like a glove. It is asymmetrical where the cutouts for the wheel wells are, so the short pontoons go to the rear of the cargo area. I would remove the head rests for sleeping.

My wife bought this for my birthday. We will be using on a few upcoming trips. It comes with a carry bag, a 12V pump and a patch kit.

I try not to brag about this, but I'm a humble idiot. The toyota shop that shipped them wrapped the LBJs in paper then boxed them up. I didn't even open the box until I the old ones were off.
If I may.... I think what he's trying to say is that he couldn't reinstall the old ones because he destroyed them taking them out????? I apologize if I'm wrong.
Exactly this. The old ones were in there good. After a combination of pickle forks, mallets, a torch, and loads of frustration they were free. Only to be put back in their boogered state.

I've done similar before. Replacing both rear wheel bearings on my Miata because one went out. Started on the bad one, got it all apart and grabbed one of the new bearings, and it was too big by 1/4 inch or so. Lol, not gonna work. But at least the other one was right, so I put that one on and then waited a couple of weeks for them to send me the correct bearing. Here's the part numbers somebody mixed up, somewhat understandable?

Finishing up the front locker install. I spent the morning doing wiring. I bought a single DIN 6-switch plate ( https://www.paranoidfabrications.com...6-switch-holes ) a while back and finally had a good reason to install it. I thought the switch Eaton supplied with the kit would work, but it didn't. Contura style, but a bit longer than the switches I had. No problem, though, I just used one of the 6 Contura switches I had. And moved a few other things I had wired up to random switches on the dash to the new switches - air compressor, rack light bar, the antenna shutoff, and the front locker.

Fluids were in it, so time for the first test drive. *fingers crossed*. And it very obviously worked. I tried it on a gravel parking lot nearby, front hubs engaged, and driving along hit the switch and yeah, the steering gets really weird with the front diff locked. Really binds up as you turn the wheel, even on gravel. The Eaton seemed to quickly lock and unlock as I drove along, never needed to drive in an 'S' or backwards, it just locked and unlocked like it should.

Oh, and drove it to do a little shopping and noticed a little oil dripping, looks like I didn't seat the passenger CV shaft in the diff quite all the way, there's a tiny little gap and that's where it's leaking. Need to get under there and give it a couple more little taps. Not now, though, it started pouring rain outside.

Other than that, drive it and the new rear diff 500 miles, change the oil in them, done. 4.88 gears and double locked now.

Congrats man! That's got to feel great. I'm glad the diff wasn't faulty. I'm excited to see what your summer trip is like with the new gears!

Replaced the steering rack. Should've been easy but apparently someone's been in there previously as one of the two fluid lines was completely bent and bound up. And of course it was the higher pressure line so I couldn't just disconnect hose clamps... The double and triple kick to the balls was first seeing the hose wouldn't align correctly when mounted to the new rack, meaning I had to buy a new one - and that if I wanted to buy one today, my options were 3x the price than if I waited until Monday (which was definitely not an option). At least someone had it in stock though
Ran into so many little problems like diff drop needing to come out for one bolt, the fitting the banjo bolt at the PS goes to kept wanting to spin so the airbox had to keep coming out, new hose wouldn't thread on at first and had to be snaked in and out, all sorts of shit like that. What should've been one of the milder jobs ended up being easily in the top 3 hardest yet :ranger:
But we got it done and although I was just aiming to fix a leak, I can't believe how weak my old rack was! Turning the wheel is literally effortless, it feels like the wind out blow it over compared to how my old one was. I bet a new pump would blow my mind :boink:

Is that thing insulated? I can't tell on the Amazon listing.

I just bought mine the other day, so I just removed some windshield stickers, phone mount, random sticky gunk to clean it up some.

I tore the FR door apart to find out the lock actuator motor had some water in it, rusted, corroded, and seized, leaving the door unable to lock. Ordered a new motor and have it partially back together so I can actually lock the thing from the inside, at least.

Figured out my passenger doors have broken and malfunctioning door close sensors, so I ordered a few replacements for them.

Tested my four wheel speed sensors trying to diagnose a non-functioning speedo/odo but all four seem good. The hunt continues. Ordered some more gauge cluster bulb sockets because mine was missing some and I need to know what lights are on.

Enjoy your fun mods, everyone. haha

Sounds like a fun project vehicle, did you get a good deal on it at least?
