What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Devbot the spindle gussets aren't enough. I added a 1/8" strip wrapping around the upper joint to prevent exactly what you showed there. A knowledgable friend strongly suggested it. Sorry you had that issue!

Took a good bite out of the strut tower, but thankfully that saved it from taking out my brake line
Judging by the rust inside the crack, it's been split for some time and been waiting to give. Scary stuff
Both CV boots survived, even the outer boot that got popped off and twisted up. So long story short now I'm sold on OEM boots lol

I am a bit surprised and impressed at the same time with the carnage. I had always thought that the top half of the spindles were designed stupidly small. Thought the gussets would actually take care of the issue but I would have never guessed the ball joint cup would split like that.

This spindle talk is making me wonder, Does anyone sell an aftermarket spindle that is beefed up in some key areas but compatible with OEM UCAs and LCAs? Be even cooler if it has a beefed up LBJ design that can still fit the shaft hole in the LCA. Perhaps the only option though is one of those kits out there that has redesigned LCA UCA and spindle and I think those only come on some long travel kits.

Already have gussets welded on. Split the ring around the UBJ.

Personnel never liked the gussets available because nothing to add strength to the area u broke, I agree with JZiggy, In addition worried about the weakening the upper ball joint "ring" with the heat being introduced while installing the gussets if time isn't taken to heat the welds after and even if time is taken welding to the spindles cast steel is a concern.

Got the rear struts back from Strutwise in Canada, they rebuild and pressured to 300, that's a 35" being held up along with the added weight of the metal added to the structure. Have to c how it does once I fill up the storage area with cloths build into hatch.

Polished and waxed 4runner that has been sitting outside since Sunday, still has a nice shine.

I gazed sadly upon her rusting body, knowing she needs a new timing belt and valve cover gaskets and wondering if its worth doing. But alas, I can't afford a new one so I know the answer.

I took my new to me 2000 4Runner Limited into the shop for a post purchase inspection.

They were almost shocked at how well it’s been taken care of. Great condition. No issues with the frame.

Needs front tie rods, new battery, and new tires. Mentioned the fog lights are cracked and rear torsion bar bushings are starting to crack. All in all…solid purchase.

I already have the new tires, and will pick up a new battery, and booked it in to have the tie rods replaced.

Pretty happy with the purchase. I also ordered some film oil and 360 nozzle to protect the frame from the winter festivities planned this year.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but aren't you supposed to do the inspection before you buy? I always do. Glad it worked out for you!

Yeah I really should have, but the market is crazy, things don’t last that long.

I had a quick look at a few key things prior to buying: the oil cap, coolant overflow, and radiator cap to look for gunk or white junk. Than the frame. They kept all the maintenance records in a binder and book.

It was a bit of a risk. I’m thankful it worked out.

Yeah sadly if you aren't competent to do your own peinspection you aren't going to get an in demand used vehicle these days. Glad you found a solid purchase.

hey guys, new to the forum and new to owning a 3rd gen sr5 4runner. Not sure how to post on here quite yet.

I am needing to replace my clutch and not sure how to go about finding parts, I've searched everywhere for 4x4 compatible clutch kits and for some reason can't find one. Not going to do any crazy rock climbing or anything yet, so just wanting a standard replacement. Any recommendations?

thank y'all

Finally got around to installing my East Detailing steering wheel cover. I’m happy with the results but it was a bigger project than I anticipated. The original leather was super grimy and took a lot of scrubbing to get clean enough for the tape to stick. I also ended up doing full stitching instead of skipping every other thread. Sure glad it’s over with!
