What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Finally managed to snag a set of factory 4Runner rims for my '97. Cleaned them all up today, and got 3 coats of semi-gloss sprayed on. Can't wait to get these mounted up (I have 265/70/16's waiting) and bolted on.

Kball, I was about to pull the trigger on an Optima. What's going on with them that you decided against them?

They used to be manufactured in CO. They got bought by Johnson Controls and now they are made in Mexico. I've read online that they have started using second rate materials but take that with a grain of salt. It's just online hearsay. I bought an Optima in 2000 and it lasted 10 years and I still have it as a back up. It was just getting weak during the colder months. I replaced it with a Mexico made Optima and it was fine until I sold that truck. I also bought a Mexico made Optima and put it in my wifes Mazda about a year ago and it's also been fine..? Lots of bad stories online though about batteries going bad for no reason. Thought I'd try I USA made battery this time so I went with the Duralast and they are only about $12 more than the Optima at Costco.

I ran a marine tow / cargo strap through all 4 eyelets in the 4Runners rear cargo area. I realize this isn't very amazing but I haven't seen anyone else do it.

My goal was to expand the places where I can tire rope or clip things onto. It also provided a base for tying down my dual twelve sub box.

I would like to follow this up with some kind of mesh cover that easily folds up and can operate as a full replacement for the Toyota cargo cover.

Plastidipped my SR5 badge on the back hatch to see what they would look like. It turned out really good but I can't decide if it looks better chrome or black on my Imperial Jade Mica paint. It is supposed to be in the 50's tomorrow so I will probably go ahead and do the rest of the badges and snap a picture or two and see what you guys think.

oil change, and finally hit 500 miles on my new gears so i had to change the gear oil in the diffs as well

Purchased a Koyo A1998 radiator for it online; will get it installed within a week or two.

Tranny's not slipping at all - in fact, the last time I had to step on it, it shifted firm as heck at 75 MPH. But I'd like to keep it that way.

Got my "plug and play" trailer wiring sorted out finally, a relay for my DRL's was backfeeding the circuit, making things wonky. I hate wiring, thankfully I have friends who do it very well.

Brian, have you considered installing additional D-rings in the cargo area? To make the strap thing work well, you either need more D-rings, or to tighten that strap so tight that you will probably break the stock d-rings. I know someone here has replaced their D-rings with heavier ones, but I can't find that thread. I bet you could install additional rings along the sides pretty easily. You may have to reinforce them a bit, but I think that should be doable.

Thanks for the info Nelson. I had considered adding more eyeholes but chose this as a temp solution. I am not fully using the tow strap but it is ready if I need it.

I will be going on a trip next weekend so we'll see how it holds up.

Replaced the bushings on my steering rack. Minimized most of my vibrations at 60+ and the truck handles like a new vehicle.
