Wasn't *today* but I added a switch inside the rear door that lets me open it from the inside. Gonna be *super* useful when camping/at trackdays. I hate having to roll myself out of the doors.
Suuuuper easy process. Just bought a small momentary switch, soldered some longer wires onto it, and then spliced it into the purple with white stripe and the light green with red stripe wires on the rear door ECU. I recommend disconnecting the battery before disconnecting the plugs on that ECU. Otherwise, the rear door won't work, and you'll freak out like I did until you unplug the battery as a last ditch attempt to reset it
When adding the switch, make sure it's small enough that it clears the metal behind the plastic cover panel. Also make sure you don't drill a hole in a spot where there's no clearance behind it..............yeah, made that mistake.......measure twice, cut once...
I also recommend adding a cover of some sort so that you don't accidentally hit it when the vehicle's unlocked.

Getting my sport ready to tow a new used 21’ ski boat home tomorrow.

Got the boat home and noticed watery grease coming from the trailer bearings. Found the bearings are shot, rough as can be. Got parts ordered and hopefully can get it rolling before the weekend.

Finally got my TRD caps onto my wheels. I waited until the tires needed rotating because I was lazy and didn't want to jack the truck up.

Oh no… you see, if this was a Range Rover, I’d suspect the E clutch in the ZF 6HP26 (i.e. dog crap) transmission, which facilitates the 3-4 shift.
Since this is a 4Runner, and we have only 5 speeds, with taller gears, it may be a finicky C3 clutch, which facilitates your 2-3 shift. This can be caused by unstable line pressure if a seal is leaking (internally, wouldn’t leak on the ground) and solenoid has run out of adaptation.
How many miles?

That is one clean black 08. Black is a tough color to maintain. Nice job!

thanks! I have 3 black cars and it's a full time job keeping them clean, but discovering the no rinse wash stuff was a gamechanger. I don't even get the hose out anymore.
I got a quart from the good paint shop with activator and used reducer. Should be enough for just the roof. I did my hood a few years back with about half of it but could probably use a quart per panel with extra coats.
I just wanted to protect the exposed basecoat. I barely sanded it, grease removal. Sorta tape some plastic around the truck and spray. Luckily my dad has a small scaffold I could wheel back and forth.
The sun was out and didn't turn out well like my hood did, but now it is protected. Paint was maybe $75 for the quart so it was the good stuff for sure. Too bad the HVLP gun I had here was clogged and had to go with the traditional sprayer.

Finished replacing the HG last week but immediately had misfires in 1,3,5.
Got it back from the shop (they checked compression and coils and said those were good and it was too much work to go further into it) and today I tore her back down and found I was advanced a link on the timing chain despite a dozen checks last time.
Fixed that and am rebuilding her but found a huge amount of new oil leaking from what I think is the oil control valve filter on Bay 1. There's some older looking oil above that, but the bulk of the really gooey stuff starts at the bolt (the one with blue paint on it in the photo). Not sure if that's caused by over-pressure from misfiring or bad seals or what. Any thoughts?

Today I recharged my AC for the second time in 3 years -- I did it the day I bought it. I noticed the AC was a little weaker last summer and it didn't seem any worse this summer, but it definitely wasn't ice cold. I put about half a can of refrigerant in and it's ice cold again.
I'm wondering if it has a small leak somewhere or if recharging after 3 years is pretty normal? It's a 2008 and only has 79k~ miles

Any other symptoms prompting the recharge (ie: blowing warm on passenger side, etc.)? The evaporator core is suspect after 10+ years, easy to confirm by putting dye in the system and checking the A/C discharge for traces of dye (and/or freon sniffer in the vents).
That said, you have a tremendously slow leak and it's a considerable amount of effort to r/r the evaporator core, so I'd tend to let it ride if I were you until you're having more frequent issues.
One other thing you can replace that's cheap/low effort are the schrader valves on the H/L sides as well as the caps - those would be commiserate with the amount of refrigerant you're losing.

Replace the schrader valves and add dye/oil to the system. Makes it easier to find leaks in the future. Mine was leaking from the condenser lower line.
use the sight glass when you recharge. Stop once the sight glass has no bubbles (engine at 1500 rpm). Using weight gets you close, but the sight glass gets you there.
One more note, there is an interior temp sensor just below the the ignition key. Blow compressed air into the opening in the dash. It gets coated in dust over the years. It Made a big difference to my ac.

I recently did the critter screen mod and once I got the cowl off, the empty space under it looked a lot like an opportunity. Out came the Noico and by the time I was done, I had added deadening along with fitting the screen and painting the cowl and wiper arms.
Before I begin, a moment of silence for this poor bastard. Found him apparently stuck half in and out of the hole where a fastener was missing. Extracted him with needle nose pliers but he was long past flying away.
Here's the job I originally had in mind before the rabbit hole yawed open before me. LOL
The space lined with butyl.
And with the foam overlay.
Frankly, I didn't expect much from adding deadener there so I was pleasantly surprised to find it makes a noticeable difference and fits in well with my philosophy that every fraction of a decibel counts.
Here are pics of the painting. I used Rustoleum Trim & Bumper and regretted it; the finish is way too glossy for my taste. Had it been somewhere more visible, I would have redone it with DupliColor's excellent product of the same name.
Very happy with the results all around.
