Freshly machined and cleaned heads sure do look pretty. It's really not too bad this all happened.. my camshaft cap bolts weren't all that tight when I took them off so that would have been a disaster vs. this minor inconvenience.

So good to get to this point.
Front cover on. Timing checked two times.
O ring on the bottom of the cover hopefully stayed in place as I shimmied the cover on.
I'll clean the engine when it's all back together.. maybe.
Biggest pain is getting the AC bolts back on. Just no room.

Just resurfacing done? Did you anything with the valves? They definitely look clean.
They cleaned, machined and tested. Nothing with the valves.
I replaced the valve seals at 150k the first time around and I only have slight oil consumption from being old so I didn't want to hassle with that this time around. No smoke so no worries

As I'm putting the last items on with the air cleaner, I thought, "this went too easy"
First start with no fuel relay to get oil pressure and all is good. I plug it in and it starts right up but idle is really rough... It revved smooth though.
Yea. Driver side fuel injectors weren't plugged in. 10 minutes to remove the intake and click on and we are good to go. So quiet now after the refresh in the heads.
Only lost a little skin while tightening the fan clutch bolts.

How much better is the ride/interior noise with all the newness you gave her?
I couldn't call the interior blacked out without having black carpet could I?
I started with the rear cargo area. This carpet can be removed but I chose to leave it in. I used dye in a condiment bottle to squirt dye on the carpet and then agitated it heavily with a nylon brush. This made an absolute MESS on the interior trim but luckily it was easy to clean with alcohol. And it's going to be black anyways I guess.
Now the rest of the carpet... I chose to replace the carpet instead of dyeing it. I chose the ultra plush version and you can see it's twice as thick as oem. I also sound proofed the entire floor and covered it with closed cell foam for heat insulation. Installing the carpet was a major pain. Cutting all the holes for the seats, wiring, and vents is extremely tedious and time consuming.
If you're going to do this, it's imperative you buy molded carpet and to take it a step further, you should also buy whatever sound proofing layer the factory will add to the carpet. It will help it retain it's shape much more. Getting the carpet to fit in the back is the most challenging part because of all the curves.
Did I like doing this? No.
Was it worth it? It's hard to deny, the black carpet finished the entire front of the 4Runner and I'm incredibly happy every time I open the door. There's only 4 pieces left and my interior blackout will be complete! (Until I decide to do my headliner)

The improvement from the carpet and sound deadening was noticeable on my first few drives but my tolerances for extraneous noise re-calibrated very quickly. It's kind of a double-edged sword. By better isolating the cab from the outside you become more aware of the noises that are happening directly inside while becoming less aware of the noises happening below you.
When I was installing it however, the "knock-test" confirmed a massive difference. It went from sounding like you were knocking on a wood door to like you were knocking on a rolled up yoga mat.
I still have to sound deaden my doors and I'm going to put as much on the interior trim pieces and center console as possible so there's still potential for improvement.

Sold it! Sadly.
Had a big bill coming due for suspension and radiator replacement, and my wife and I couldn't swallow that right now. Driving a little VW hatchback for a couple of years until I can pass it on to my son and buy something for myself again.
I did buy a set of Bilstein 5100s for the 08 4R that I never got installed, so those are up for sale in the Classified section.

Edit: this worked great...in my garage with the key in the ACC position. Once I start the truck and/or leave the garage, the reception goes back to garbage. Going to try something suggested by [MENTION=5149]riceandpho[/MENTION] and see if that works.
Finally got the HD Radio feature of my Pioneer AVH-2550 HU working properly by installing a BOSS Audio Systems MRANT10 Weatherproof Marine Dipole Hideaway Antenna,Black from Amazon. The radio reception had been awful, even driving down around Atlanta (I live 60 miles north). Granted, I missed connecting a blue wire when I did the install which I think powers the antenna inlaid in the rear side glass, so that likely prevented me from getting the full benefit of the OEM antenna (though I did buy a splitter so both plugs were used). In any case, after plugging the new one in, I got digital connections to all my stations inside my garage so for ~$8, I'm happy.

not sure if HD radio is dying also, but in my area, it seems we get more interference, maybe 5g has something to do with this, maybe 4g also.
HDradio.com should give you some station listing. when I get to use those HD radio in other vehicle, its great, my non hd radio pioneer still sound good in my truck.

its worth doing the whole truck, I recently did my headliner last year, it made my truck extra quiet. I had dynamat xtreme on my doors inside and out also the rear cargo floor and tailgate first, then after a few years later I used a new product call secondskin damplifier pro, and did all the floors and halfway up the firewall. then years later I waited for another sale and finally did the roof, added additional layer in the cargo floor area and also did the sides more. truck feels more quiet, and when it rains, its solid sound. I didn't add anything to my panels, but have consider doing it.

Yeah I want to do the roof just for the reason you mentioned, when it rains it really does sound like you're in a tin can. That's good to know there's still noticeable improvement to be made!

my pockets got lighter, had 2 new cv axels put in, along with both inner and outer tie rod, alignment done also. truck drives really good now for the 20 miles I put on.
one axels started had the boot tear and leaked, decided to just do both since they were replaced at 120k, both aftermarket axels lasted another 100k before the boot tear. my truck current mileage is at 221k. my old alignment was still good when they did it, 5 years ago, current alignment is really good, still got 3 on the caster. I did post a picture up on facebook

Ah, this is one of those small projects I really like to see. Sometimes these little things make all the difference in daily usability. Bookmarked your build for a future reference!
Explored a few miles of trails around the camping area in Fruita. Had to stop and take a couple tumbleweeds out of my muffler from the overgrown middle rut of the trail.
Probably could use new LCA ball joints as there is a terrible rattle and the moog replacements are likely shot.. EDIT.. jiggled wheels, tie rod ends. Tight . Lol the lower engine guard that's held in with a few stripped bolts is the rattle. I'll fix that eventually
