What did you do with your 4runner today?

forgot i turned traction and stability control off and got some oversteer. took a corner on my my way home from work today that i have taken thousands of times with no problems but today was a bit different. i have never had problems in rain, snow or ice on this corner but today ended up sideways after the turn. i didnt get out and look but i think there had to be some oil in that corner. no harm done but i will now think twice before turning that stuff off

More power and fish tail your way out. Nothing like high RPMs, lots of body roll, screeching, and some 11's coming out of a turn :lookout:

^^^Everyone picks on me when I say I personally like the nannies most of the time. When I want to turn them off in the snow or off road, I lock the center diff.

Very interesting though.

since i redid my retro and adjusted the lens the way greenkouki suggested on hidplanet, this is wat i have now, straighter cutoff and still flares on the top right, but much flater on the lower step cufoff.
and more even color for me after i cleaned the inside of the headlight lens.

I've had mine turned off for 7 months now and it drives like a normal vehicle again. ATRAC still works in 4L though and kept me from getting stuck in some deep sand while pulling out an F250

I've had one experience, one (in 1ft deep snow) where I was like "wow that's what people on here talk about with the severe de-throttling". I really don't think it's a crazy system that holds us back, but if you're in the rough stuff, just lock up that center diff as soon as you get there.

So you've also had ABS disabled for 7 months too?

I can't stress enough that "to each your own" - so I obviously can't/don't think you're crazy for disabling or anything I guess. Just don't understand why not utilize the technology that's there to help in most instances.

I guess in one respect, it's like taking the t4r back to 90's tech, but on the other hand I guess it's taking it back to a technology that worked fine for everyone for a hundred years or so...

(Point is I'm not arguing, just posting my thoughts).

These have actually been my thoughts as well as I read people doing this. I just never chimed in as I don't fully understand it all yet.

ABS still functions, but traction control doesn't. It's a beautiful thing.

I turned them back on last night while driving in the rain and fog

Opinions on the tinted fog lights? Still trying to make up my mind about it.

looks cool, I think its more interesting looking than plain clear plastic.

Ive debated doing this or yellow on mine but id use plastic film

Yeah I was thinking about getting plastic film. This spray is easily removable though. I removed it like 3 times yesterday trying to get it right before it got too dark and I had to leave it like this. I'm gonna try one more time today and let them dry for a couple hours in the sun before putting them back on.

I actually have some yellow film in my garage for the fogs, but budgeting the time from my wife and 8 month old is not always easy, so there it sits... Lol.

Haven't even looked into how to take the lenses out or anything yet. Might be easier than I think..

My ABS still works as does my ATRAC the only thing that's actually disabled is the VSC and normal TRAC. I can make a video and show you, I've compiled many thoughts on why certain systems are defeated while leaving others unaffected but no one ever reads my post.

I grounded out the pin #7 iirc on my DLC port under the steering wheel inadvertently when hooking up my Ultragauge for the first time and on pre 05 T4R's that do not use the CAN bus for data this port is used for setting the ZPD and it erases it when it's grounded or when a device tries to communicate with it. Because their is no value the vehicle turns off the VSC/TRAC.

Also in my experience driving off road, the Torsen mechanical torque sensing differential works better in most situations (with all 4 tires having contact) without any interference from the electronics (and better than traditional part time 4x4). It's a system that is renowned in rally racing and used on all Quattro branded Audi cars.

Takes 2 minutes to pop the housings out, 3 clips in total. Unless you're lucky and have a broken clip like mine that takes some extra effort to remove and put back in.

Rebel - haha once again (no sarcasm) - excellent post. Well said and I like what you're saying - I really do.

I also wanted to add that I feel my t4r no longer feels "fast" by any means. Slightly quick maybe? I did up the tire size to 70 series... But yeah - just standard "American v6 sedan quick" now lol. (From our previous discissions).

I don't recall if we had a T4R feels fast discussion, fast is a relative term. I don't think any stock SUV or truck is fast unless its purpose is to be fast like a Syclone or Lightning. However relatively speaking the 4Runner (v8 especially) IMO is respectable in the seat of your pants department for a vehicle of its heft. It won't be winning any street races anytime soon but driving it back to back compared to my XJ it feels like a freaking Bugatti!!!!

I know I am rambling on a bit but I noted earlier that I pulled out an F250 with the T4R the other night. For whatever reason I decided against taking my Jeep out in the woods that evening and I picked up said F250 driver and had him ride back to my house to get the recovery gear from my Jeep and had to "gun it" to merge into traffic from the shoulder of the road. For that very brief moment from 0-45mph I thought to myself "HOLY SHIT THIS THINGS FAST" but then I remembered I am used to only having 120hp on tap.

Agreed with all of the above. I was initially referring to when I was one of the ones actually calling the 4th Gen t4r's "fast" (in relative terms) in the past.

I really should go wash and vacuum the T4R before my wife gets in it to drive. The boot area is filthy with slings and shovels and my hi-lift jack covered in mud from pulling out said truck....or I could just make myself a loaded corona and sit in my porch and ramble on about 4Runners and Jeeps for awhile...
