What did you do with your 4runner today?

Started with this billet Hilux Surf grill. I am teying a couple of things while i am in vacation. I color matched the bottom bar. I just need to wet sand and polish it. I drilled the rivets out and painted the billet a satin black, for a little contrast. I also have two different types of mesh on order so i will try them out when i get home. I will finish it off with the FJ TOYOTA emblem. Can't wait to get home and test fit it

I'm color matching my frame - my plan was plastic adhesion promoter, laqer primer, wet sand, coat of titanium silver, wet sand coat wet sand, clear coat.

Is that over kill?

Unless you come across a steal on it like he did, they're around $5-600. And I don't think they're easy to find.

That will give you an incredible finish! Make sure you use ultra fine grit

Sorry for the bad pic but here it is as of now. The frame of this one is way more substantial than the stock 03-05 grills

I scuffed it up and then wiped it down with denatured alcohol. I hit with a couple light coats of the primer/filler. After that i sprayed a few light coats of the paint. If there were any little imperfections in the paint i lightly sanded them. Then i sprayed several light coats of the clear coat. When i get home i will wet sand it lightly with 1000 grit, then hit it with my polisher and some Adam's polish/wax

how did my frame come out/how different is it from yours?

It looks pretty good I think, but the pics a little blurry (edit- nevermind, just got to the high res version). Are you gonna try and glass & bondo or just leave it all open?

lol, the aluminum bracets (and machine screws and JB weld) are what connect the parts of the sub frame that I cut. I cut above the bends and used the existing holes for the highest tab and the mounting point for the frame to the grille where the little black screw goes. Since the angles didn't line up after I cut it, i had to offset the bracket and stuff. Right now, as it sits, it fits with the black trim piece over the bumper which shows just a little bit and gives it a nice accent, but i may lower it to cover that completely.

As for the glass/bondo, probably going to leave that open, im doing the "3D" mesh so that part of the grille should be relatively hidden. Though, if the stars align (and [MENTION=46025]HokieRunner[/MENTION] wants to glass his grille before my paint comes) then I may put some glass over the tabs and fill it in, but probably not, it feels rigid enough. I will, however, glass over the corners or fill them with bondo since there's a small gap


Here's a close up - does that make more sense/is it a good idea?

Gotcha, yeah I think it'd look much better with the corners patched. The gaps from the guts aren't as bad and less visible from normal viewing angles.

yeah, i'm gonna patch them up once i get the fitment perfected tomorrow or sunday. I'm just waiting on my mesh and paint now

Grabbing my 2x4 sheet of mesh tomorrow! Might finish the grille this weekend.... After messing with [MENTION=72341]NJshadow93[/MENTION]'s gauges and what not.

Might have a completed grill by Tuesday! Then building one for [MENTION=83438]Duck'n[/MENTION] and another guy

It was a pretty busy day yesterday
Started off by completing the CB antenna installation


Then I took a wire wheel to the front calipers and cleaned them real well and painted them red. Removed the rotors and pads and installed EBC rotors and Green Stuff 7000 pads.

I will do the same to the back brakes in a few months. The front rotors were a bit warped.



Then, while the front wheels were off I removed the back tires, washed the inside of all 4 rims and rotated the tires.

Then a friend brought his Camry over and we installed a aftermarket head unit.

All in all it was a productive day.

Looks good, any noticeable difference in braking power?

I am following the break in instruction details from EBC so it is hard to answer. The vibration caused by the warped rotors is gone.

There is a huge difference between the Limited edition and Sport edition braking. The Sport edition has much better braking.

Painting the calipers red has improved my gas mileage by 20% though

That's strange, I would have expected 40 horsepower from that. Better gas mileage is good though too!

Worked on the ham install. Got the power, antenna and separate speaker wires run. Just need to finish the head mount.
