The c-clip is part of the axle and would be *really* hard to get off. If he didn't install it again it'd be leaking fluid and the axle could just fall out. So that'd be bad.....

If the CV is just dried out/dead/popping when you turn in 4WD, it's not a *huge* issue if you're just dailying it in 2WD. If you push it in 4WD though, odds are the axle is gonna snap. Which is more of a pain than anything else, since you still have the normal drive wheels. That said, it should definitely still be replaced before too long.

Yeah, mine had a *very* small tear in it (maybe an inch long, like it was cut by a rock or stick or something) and over time the grease just spun itself out of it. There was barely any visible damage, but the joint was completely dry.

If yours tore, it could've gotten dirt inside that's slowly worn away at the bearings. Which is why I always just replace torn CVs on the 4Runner rather than messing with rebooting them. Odds are some dirt got in (especially with how much I drive dirty roads/offroad). They're not too expensive and might even have a warranty of some sort.

Check the bolt that holds the window to the regulator for the rattle. Mine was rattling for a bit when rolling up, then started actually rolling up wrong and being at an angle. The rear bolt on the bottom of the window had fallen off.

Thanks! I saw a nice writeup here for that so I bookmarked it for later today when I get home. Should be a nice and easy fix for a very annoying problem.

Having installed the smokers kit, but hated looking at the cig lighter, I started looking for a lighter with a Toyota logo on it, but couldn't find one I liked.



Ended up getting a twin USB charger with a trick display (matches our interior lighting).

Is that ashtray kit Toyota part # 74110-35010-B0? That seems to be what’s needed, but Amazon says that it won’t fit my 2006 4Runner. Thanks!

I absolutely love this idea, and it looks great. Being able to pick from a variety of colors is a huge plus. My clearcoat is absolutely fried in many spots due to the previous owners neglect. The entire roof is obliterated, and it's slowly creeping down the pillars and the rear. A new paint job is outrageously expensive, and I'd much rather dump that money into other mods.

What is the maintenance like for a raptor finish as far as washing. How long is it expected to last? Is it possible to apply any sort of UV coatings or Ceramic coatings to it? Living in the desert, and having to park outside is absolutely brutal on my paint.

Another silly little repair job.

Leaking tailgate allowed the water to soak through the grab strap, when you tried to close the tailgate using the strap the water ran up your sleeve. I took the tailgate cover off and found the part of the weatherstrip that sits against the window all dried up and sitting at the bottom. A new weatherstrip was just over $30, quick and easy fix.

I'm also really curious about maintenance, cost, diy or professionally done, etc. because I've been looking into this route for a while and have been hesitant to pull the trigger.

The reason I did it was my paint was crap. I did it all myself and it took 3 days. I had to degrease, sand the whole thing and then etch prime all the bare metal spots. I also used some adhesion promoter for the plastic pieces. I also masked all windows etc. the cost was $200 for 8 liters of tintable liner plus $20 for the gun. I also bought a quart of the cement gray metallic tint. I think it was around $30. Hardest part was the masking and sanding some of the hard to reach spots. As far as maintenance, it should be easy to clean, it has UV protection and is scratch resistant. I am very pleased with how it turned out. Here are some before pics and progress pics.

Paint Job

I'm looking to get my 2005 a new paint job. I got a quote from Maaco for $2400 here in the Austin, TX area. I've considered doing it myself(how bad can it be since it looks bad with the sun damage and clear coat peeling) but think it would be too time consuming and $2400 seems like a good price since I haven't had a car payment in over 10 years and plan to keep it another 10 years(I bought it new). You did a heckuva job!

My roof and hood clear were shot as well but some sanding and cleaning and a cheap gun and the gloss matches 2005 OEM... slight orange peel texture and good enough. About $80 from a real paint store for a quart of clear. I didn't even worry about getting all the old clear off or making it even, just prepped.
The hood was about 3 hours prep, paint, buff, wax. I still have the roof to do.

According to Conicelli Toyota, your 2006 4Runner smokers kit is: 74110-35010-B0, so Amazon doesn't have something right. I personally can't remember the part number, it's been a while, but I got mine at fleabay. $40 if I'm not mistaken.

Were you able to paint the door jams or was the liner too thick to do so?

This is one of my major points of contention with lining the body since I have Salsa Red paint code and want to do black. I don't want the red contrast door jams after the fact.

You can do it, you just have to do a lot of masking
