What did you do with your 4runner today?

Finally got time to do more trimming:

Paddled upwind into the dark clouds until I thought lightning might strike.
Posted twice. Still sideways. Oh well

We be slidin!

Installed my sliders from RSG Metalworks last night/this morning. Pretty straightforward and everything lined right up...

Good lord I should have run a tap before trying to bolt everything in! I managed to get everything in without cross threading any bolts. OK maybe I cross threaded THE LAST BOLT. It was 3 AM. So I'll have to re-thread that particular one. There was around 20, so I'm just gonna have to be content with those numbers.

Beforehand I cleaned each thread with CRC Brakleen and a brush, but man...it wasn't particularly helpful. I feel like I played 72 holes of golf in a day, my hands, arms, and legs are sore as hell.

Totally worth it.

Got rid of that nasty canister and exhaust tip and NO, Im not worried about exhaust fumes. Done this on my last 2 4runners lol

Ended up driving 600 miles with the 4Runner this weekend. 3/4 of the miles were towing a 3,300 lb boat. All miles on relatively flat, paved state highway and interstate. 1/3 of the miles were at 60mph and slower, 2/3 of the miles were at 75mph and towing.

Overall average fuel economy was 15.3mpg. The average was pulled down from the first report, because of the 75mph towing miles.

4Runner performed very well. What a great vehicle.

I installed the URD 255lph fuel pump with external fuel filter and replaced my injectors with OEM denso. Not to bad overall, I've had to deal with worse things when working other vehicles.
Are you planning on supercharging/turboing in the future? Not sure the rest of our stock system could demand enough to justify a 255 without forced induction.

This weekend I was exploring under my 4Runner and found that my trans dipstick had cracked in half at the joint (top piece broke off inside the bottom piece) and was leaking a good bit. Since I couldn't get the bottom out, I ended up Steel Sticking the two together. Did a 60 mile test drive and it seems to be holding together great!

While under there, I grabbed hold of my passenger front towhook and had a horrifying experience as it pulled right off of my lower radiator support.......

It looked like it'd fallen off at some point before I got the car, and had been JB welded back on. Guessing that's why it'd been freshly undercoated when I bought it. My current guess is that the rust here was caused by the constant coolant leak the 4R has when I bought it. It'd probably been happening long before then, as well.

The plan for now is to cut out the bad spots and weld in new metal. Probably the best I can do short of buying an entire support from somewhere.

Here's the other side, which looked perfectly fine (I wire brushed and painted all of the support, which is why it's black). The spot in the middle is a chip in the old undercoat.

The rest of the frame had pretty much zero rust on it (apart from a body mount that had a little) so I cleaned it and undercoated it all. Hoping I was able to catch things before they got too bad.

when i restored my front chasis (de-rusted and re-painted) i toyed with the idea of just chopping out the complete front lower cross member and welding in 2" box with the same or similar wall thickness as the original chasis. welding on a U for the tow eye. i figured 2" x 1.5" rectangular box would be almost perfect with a little lip either side good for laying a bead down. turns out my bar was solid and it was only minimal surface pitting.

the only difficulty would be you should probably remove the rad to get a good nozzle angle in the mig.

just a suggestion.

another option for welding is original PN: 5102135071

Broke the RCI skid plates in. No rub in these videos, though...

Also used the recovery gear to clear a downed tree...

Went a few places I shouldn’t have with old worn struts, warped rotors and all, but wound up doing it anyways and had a little fun in the Mojave Desert. Good to be home. Also good to know now what I really need to do for my next upgrades.

Don’t have any good pics of the actual challenging parts (was a little preoccupied) but for those who have been up Big Wash Rd. Behind Chloride, AZ know it’s not really meant for stock and out of practice chumps like me. Wifey was death gripping the passenger door handle like crazy, lol. I should probably dig into the forums deeper than I have to get the tips I need to lift and upgrade suspension.

Installed some new 2.5 icon shocks w/adjusters but not before having to Fab up some rear shock hoops using some .120 dom tubing I had laying around.

Recently fab up a hidden winch mount using some steel plate and utilizing the stock bumper to keep the stock look and still able to keep the light bar exactly where it was.

I fixed something that bothered me about how the Volant intakes are sold.

For whatever reason, holes for mounting the MAF are not pre-drilled, and you're supposed to use two included (essentially) wood screws to make your own holes in the plastic intake pipe.

I changed that with some M4 nutserts and some stainless hardware:

Bumped up the Bilstein 5100's to the 1.75" lift (3rd notch) and got her sitting almost level! No lift in the rear, stock springs all around. Also pulled off the running boards. Really liking the change it made!

Also got new lower control arms and front wheel bearings installed. Shes a happy girl!

Can’t believe I did it all in one day but I got all my armor installed + new wheels & bigger A/T tires. The roof rack is all that’s left. Little worried about my mileage though and I think I lost some ground clearance. :-(

Yeah, no. What I really did with my 4Runner today was drive to a barber shop where I was quite surprised to find that parked outside. The owner said her son collects military hardware. Ya don’t say!
