What did you do with your 4runner today?

Drained & refilled the coolant. Loving Cobb County Toyota‘s online parts department. Got OEM Toyota coolant for the same cost as aftermarket.

Only way to go for coolant, how bad did you think getting to the driver side block draincock was?

For me it's impossible unless you jack the truck up just enough to remove the left front wheel. I decided to use the passenger side only yesterday for a couple of reasons.

First, I hadn't written that part down so I forgot until it was time to get to that draincock. I didn't want to jack the truck up so I went back to a few threads on coolant replacement. In one, the OP went through draining from the block but the venerable BlackWorksInc commented that draining from the radiator was fine and you can use the draincocks if you wanted to get "the last little bit."

That OP who used both draincocks said he got a total of ~7 liters, which is 7.4 quarts, almost exactly what was in my marked bucket. (Seems low since the capacity is 10.4, but that's what he wrote.) My old coolant was also clear pink like what was coming out of the new bottle I bought. All things considered, I decided to let it go until next time.

For anyone DIYing this service, the Lisle 24680 no-spill funnel system for adding coolant, also helpfully recommended by BlackWorksInc, is a must.

I replaced my water pump just the other weekend. From the radiator I got probably 3 quarts. The passenger side I got about 4 quarts. The driver side wasn't bad to get to after removing the wheel. Taking the wheel off only takes a few minutes and then it's easy to get to. I lowered that side of the truck farther then to get the last bit out since the wheel was off. I got probably a quart out of the driver side, and another quart out of the radiator then. Plus what spilled out when I took off the water pump I probably got close to 9.5 quarts out of the system.

Since you don't do it very often I recommend opening all the drain cocks. It only adds a few minutes and helps get the old stuff out.

Here's the water pump that was leaking on my 08 V6 too. Supposedly the Toyota dealer replaced this 5 years and only 15k miles ago for the previous owner per the Toyota records when I bought the vehicle.

It didn't look like anything had been touched in there based on the dirt/coloring on the timing cover behind the water pump. The bolts also had some goop on them and they seemed to be in 'strategic' locations, as if they were installed by the factory that way. So unless the tech who did it put all the bolts back where they go it seems like it was never actually done despite what the records show.

That does make me feel better that the pump actually lasted probably 83k miles instead of only 15k miles. Hopefully this one lasts a long time. Went with an Aisin pump, Toyota Thermostat and belt.

Woolwax'd the frame over the weekend. Along with installing new 2 new axles, 2 new front calipers and 2 new endlinks. Still more to do.... ugh.

I agree. I'll be ready next time and it will be fine until then.

I’m sure it will be fine, the point is to change it lol. Mine at 150k was still pink. My truck had zero records from the dealership so I have no idea if it was ever changed. I changed the radiator hoses while I had it empty also, used Gates hoses from rockauto.

Winter claws

Threw some new summer wheels on and swapped the old wheels for the new winter claws...I think these dogs will hunt just fine!

I got my used oil analysis results back today. Engine is good (250k miles), but the transmission started shuddering around 30-45mph and the oil results show "torque converter/pump
wear and "cooler clutch leaking/clutch pack/thrust washer wear". The shuddering isn't as bad with new fluid, but it's still there and annoys the crap out of me. A local transmission shop quoted 7.5 hours @ $125 to replace the tranny or just the torque converter. I'm thinking I'll wait a few 1000 miles and do another oil analysis, if it's showing more wear then I'll really start thinking about repairing it. Still not sure if I'd pay a shop or try to do it myself. How long can these transmissions last with some damage like this? The shuddering didn't start until I did a 3k mile trip towing a 2000 lbs trailer through Nevada and Utah, so I think I overheated it. Will be getting a transmission cooler soon...

The transfer case isn't showing any wear, but the front and rear diffs did, and I found a 1/8" chunk of metal in the fluid. Not sure if it came out of the front or rear... How reliable are these diffs? If the front diff implodes can I still use 2wd?

Same here. I'm at 218K with plans to have this truck indefinitely so I'm doing my best to stay ahead of everything, especially items like hoses, the serpentine belt and so on that can leave you on the side of the road.

A wise move. I have a Hayden 698 on the way right now. Walmart has them for $43 shipped.

Thanks! Very much appreciated! I have endless plans lol... I'm afraid I won't ever be done with it. Really wanting to tackle a custom carbon fiber snorkel build to integrate into my fiberglass wide fenders but have't decided if I want to cut the fender just yet.. lol

Main reason I said I can wait to see what else you come up with since you’re always changing it up lol. Keep it up

Found some low mileage 2021 TRD 4R springs, shocks and upper control arms. Bought them Saturday and Sunday I installed them on the wife’s car. I didn’t use the shocks since we had some low bilsteins in the car already. The springs were stiffer compared to the SR5 ones so it got raised up and rides more to our liking. I also replaced the burnt out bulbs on a/c controls and updated the interior lighting with some LED. I got some KO2’s and a passenger axel waiting to get installed so hopefully I get some time next weekend.

Dropped a new radiator and replaced the thermostat and hoses. Also just realized I have no connection between the ECU and DLC? Now I'm searching (to no avail) for a pinout diagram for the DLC to test the connections because I feel they may have been moved when a previous owner did an aftermarket install. Very lame.

well ... man you kind of inspired me to keep going lol. I just ended up ordering a top spin snorkel pre-filter and once it shows up I'm going to be fabricating a custom carbon fiber snorkel for the rig..

New 4Runner owner as of a month ago! I was changing out my foglight bulbs when I noticed this harness hanging near the passenger side fog light. Does anyone know what this is for? I apologize my flash blew out the exposure a bit.

Thank you!
