What do I gain going from 4th gen to 5th???

Greetings all. I'm new to this site and had a few questions about possibly upgrading my 4Runner.

I currently have the last generation Sport Edition with about 45k on it. Great shape/condition but could use new tires. I saw the new 5th generation at the auto show about 8 months back and have contemplated changing cars since. Could you tell me what I would gain or what I would lose going from my current car to a new 4Runner? More importantly, is it "worth it" (I know that's subjective). Thanks for your help.

I love my 5th gen. At the same time, I bought mine with the expectation of keeping it for ~100k miles or 10 years.

While I like the 5th Gen better than the 4th, if I were in your shoes and was happy with my 4th Gen w/ only 45k miles I wouldn't upgrade unless I had money coming out my ears.

That's the reason for a 5th gen...new tires on a 4th...

Do I lose anything other than money from going 4th to 5th? (or vice versa).

By going to the 5th Gen T4R you will get:

1- Newer Truck. (your 4th Gen already has 44k miles)

2- Bigger than the 4 Gen.

3- Stronger Engine and Better gas Mileage.

4- Keyless Start. (on LTD)

I got 24mpg on the nose driving my 4WD SR5 locally and to Columbus over the weekend.

To me, the new 1GR is simply a peach. They added some great fuel saving and drivability technology (higher pressure injectors, roller rocker drivetrain, dual VVT) when they updated it. I haven't towed anything heavy with it, but it is always ready and willing to get you moving while being happy as a clam to lug along on the highway sipping the fuel.

If I already had a low mileage 4th gen, I'd probably not have bought the 2010 because I like to get as much life as practical out of my vehicles.

Since you asked, I feel that the 5th gen is a more refined & strengthened 4th gen. It is not a major step above the 4th gen, but an improvement. Sure, you lose the multimode 4wd (my biggest complaint) and V8, but the 5th gen is like a 2nd edition to the 4th gen.

We really have pretty ideal conditions. Very few stop lights, mostly flat. I just set the cruise at the speed limit and relax. I'm just shocked at how easy it gets that mileage. With my GTI, I'd have to use a few hypermiling techniques to beat the EPA rating by the same percentage. With the T4R, I just set the cruise at the speed limit and I almost always have a 22+ mpg number looking back at me.

I drive a lot of highway miles. My office is 21 miles from my home. I'm lucky that my route avoids the rush hour traffic. Sp, most of my miles are at highway speeds....very little stop and go. My typical blended average per tank is around 19.5 when I'm in town all week.

If I go to our Tampa office, my blended average jumps to about 20.5.

My absolute best tank so far was 20.1 (without a trip to Tampa).

My worst has been 17.9. That week, I was on vacation and went back and forth to Home Depot a lot and drove around the city running errands.

Coming from a Nissan Titan, which never averaged over 14.5....I have zero complaints.
