What engine part is this?

zstampe: I fill it up till the pump stops automatically so theres no variation in the amount of gas in the tank, that's the constant.

23 gallon tanks divided by the trip computer's 320 = 13.91 miles per gallon which is very low even for pedal mashers. Isn't that how the math is done?

Ok I gotcha, the reason I asked is that my 06 v6 has never taken 23 gallons (never ran it empty though). I usually fill it when the light comes on or the lie-o-meter says 0 miles till empty (never have ran out ha ha) and its never taken much more than 21 gallons,

Good luck bud

I edited my first post. Your mpg sounds unusually low. With my completely stock 4runner with a V8, I was getting over 20 mpg. Even after all my mods I still get around 15.5 mpg city/hwy. If you're basing your mpg strictly on the computer just keep in mind the computer is unreliable. Ignore the computer and figure it out by hand. Number of miles on trip odo/gallons of gas to fill up.

Yes I ran the tank dry once and next time i filled it took about 22.5 gallons (had a gas can handy for the trip to the station).

I always ignore the MPG the computer shows and do it by hand but I do take the RANGE on the computer seriously b/c it's pretty close.

20MPG with a V8? I'll take that any day ! I bet you're not doing any city driving!

Just plug it back in

Scojoe (or anyone else) so that wasn't the pcv valve, it's called the air filter housing hose (according to Haynes, 6-18).

So to get back to the question any harm in driving around with it disconnected?

Update: Went to a friend's mechanic who oddly enough has an '08 SR5 V6 which he bought used. His gas tank was 3/4 full and the range read 218 miles left so either this is normal or we both have problems with our truck. Him and his crew also think the 265/70 would negatively effect the MPGs, I agree that it would but by that much?

Work done today: 5000 mile M1 5W-30 oil change & lubed all the driveshaft & related components ( apparently bone dry, thank you Midas for never doing this for me )

I've found a new shop for my truck but it's like 30 miles away from me !

Pic from this morning just after a fill up. Range reads 310 miles till empty...

2004 SR5 V6

FWIW I get a calculated 16.x MPG driving to work, suburbs to highway then small town driving.
Digital Readout says 390 or 42x (if I pump more after it shuts off).

I use Toyota oil as I've only changed it once myself (used Pennzoil Ultra that time but did not record mileage).

Shempf: Yea I used to get that on my digital readout, sure do miss those numbers. I know everyone says the readouts aren't reliable and tend to be a little optimistic, I agree but when there's a big big difference something is off...

Just hunch, what kind of gasoline do you use, regular/premium and do you know if theres any ethanol mixed in? I want to run ethanol free gas to test my theory but can't find any in my area.
