What engine part is this?

Anyone know what hose this is that's undone on this V6 1GR-FE engine? (it's the air filter housing hose)

Edit: that wasn't the pcv valve, this is:

Yea, I seafoamed it per the threads on this forum trying to get more mileage out of her. Nothing really did the trick.

Anyone know what can happen if the truck is driven around with the hose/valve uncoupled? Any fix for it?
 
LOL thx Mike, I finally plugged it back in after 9 months of driving around with it unplugged; it happened when I had my CAI installed, they forgot & after I got curious with the truck & undid the cover saw the culprit.

Problem is the mileage still sucks! Would replacing the PCV valve work? Anything else to look for?

Trip computer says I'll get 320 Miles to a full tank ( gas pump stops by itself). I'm sure I used to see 390-400 on the display. Hand calc shows about 13-14 MPGs mixed driving.

I've actually driven it down to the last ounce of gas till it died!
 
13-14 is kinda low....

The next question is how are you driving?? They way you drive is probably the single most important factor in gas mileage. It can mean as much as a 50% swing in gas mileage.

Right now with the winter gas mix here in NH I'm only getting about 18. And most of that is highway driving cruising at about 70.
 
Ever since this problem I've eased up on the gas pedal, cruise to stop signs/lights & don't tailgate.

I used to think it was the winter mix issue but that's not it unless they were using winter mix here in the NYC area all summer!

Seriously, I'd hate to let the truck go for this reason... Think changing the pcv valve would do it? I bought the part, just waiting for the rain to stop.

I see from your signature that you have 265/70/17's... those are bigger than stock (265/65/17) and affect the mileage readout on the computer. I am running 265/70/17 BFG AT's..getting about 340 miles on the readout... not sure actual though since i don't carry a GPS..
 
it was already like that before I upsized the tires so I'm sure the tire size has nothing to do with it. But maybe I'm wrong, maybe more 265/70/17 owners can chime in.
 
How many gallons are you putting in each time? I put in about 20 gallons give or take after the light comes on.

Driving 320 miles on 20 gallons comes up to 16mpg which is about right. Plus the trip computer isn't the most accurate thing ever.

zstampe: I fill it up till the pump stops automatically so theres no variation in the amount of gas in the tank, that's the constant.

23 gallon tanks divided by the trip computer's 320 = 13.91 miles per gallon which is very low even for pedal mashers. Isn't that how the math is done?

Are you really running the tank dry and using up all 23 gallons? I think your numbers are off. Start off by topping off the tank. Zero out the trip odometer. The next time you fill up go back to the same station, same pump, hopefully the temps are pretty close. Fill up again to the auto shut-off. Then divide the number of miles on the trip odometer by the number of gallons on the gas pump. That's your mpg. Since you're using auto shut-off on the pump, remember each pump varies as to when it shuts off.

Ran the tank dry once. Every time I fill her up I reset the trip odo and take those miles into the equation the next time I fill up, wash/rinse/repeat...
 
I edited my first post. Your mpg sounds unusually low. With my completely stock 4runner with a V8, I was getting over 20 mpg. Even after all my mods I still get around 15.5 mpg city/hwy. If you're basing your mpg strictly on the computer just keep in mind the computer is unreliable. Ignore the computer and figure it out by hand. Number of miles on trip odo/gallons of gas to fill up.

Your method and numbers are off. You need to chart 30 fill ups and mileage counting gallons used each time and not assuming the tank if full by when the nozzle clicks off since the filler nozzles can all vary in back pressure sensitivity based on age and state of disrepair. Skip the dash computer. Keep a spreadsheet. Over 30 fill ups you will have total gallons/total miles. Should be pretty accurate. The more fill ups you average in the more accurate your final numbers.

My V6 gets 19-22mpg. charted over 30 fill ups. BTW, have you changed the spark plugs every 30,000 miles and air filter every 20,000?
