what essential survival gear do you keep in your Runner?

Let's make sure this is near the top again with winter fast upon us.

I'm trying to figure out how to pack water when it's just gonna freeze.

Put a mink blanket over it.

Works for me. The bottle water does get half ice and half water but it doesn't freeze the whole bottle. The lowest we got here in Colorado Springs was -15 degrees.

I'm a State ERT so both of my vehicles have full load kits.

You're a pro. Does it need to be a mink blanket, or will other types do?

If I am going anywhere remote, I usually have my hiking pack with me which will have all my sleeping gear (bag/tent/pad), cooking stuff, food, water/filter, clothes, boots, etc. If I am not going hiking specifically, I'd probably throw that stuff in just to be safe.

Here is a review for REI storm proof matches. Pretty sweet.

I would always have a bic and firesteel but these would be a good backup. Especially in high wind and rain. :wow:

If you are worried about water freezing in the winter, just pack a portable stove, then you'll have fire and you'll never run out of water with all the snow around. Or you can just use it to thaw out your frozen water bottles.

I'm an (injured) hiker, so I have my backpack ready to go for any long/remote trips. It has a -20 c (-4 F) sleeping bag, a thick winter jacket and snow pants, hat, gloves and socks. It also has a stove and hatchet and other random things.

I then have a tupperware container full of stuff that I normally keep in the truck, tools, a 12 volt air compressor, a metal empty waterbottle, full first aid kit, tow straps, ratchet straps, a blanket, (orange) safety vest, liquid wrench, water filter, water purification tablets, a zippo and lighter fluid. I'm sure there is more. Right now my hiking boots are in the back of the truck, because I'm not using them.

I took all the stuff I use to use for hiking and backpacking and tried to organize it rationally so it wouldn't take up much room. I only bring the backpack if I expect to be somewhere remote.

Oh I also make sure i have a dog collar and leash, if I'm stranded in my truck, there's a good chance he's there with me.

Duct tape duct tape duct tape duct tape. Some great trail fixes have been done with duct tape. If I'm in the mountains I am packin'... .38 Special S&W Airweight. And very soon .45XDM. <-------------Been waitin' a long time for that one to come out. There are tons of reasons to carry a "Bug-out Bag." Read a couple books... Emergency by Neil Strauss for reference in being "prepared." If you want to CCW or already do (experienced or not) then read: In The Gravest Extreme by Massad Ayoob. There is a lot of good information in both of those books.

In the 4Runner I have a flash light, a jacket, gloves, and a hatchet. I carry a backpack around with me all the time that contains a first aid kit, 100' of paracord, a SureFire E2D flashlight, a Larue Tactical Beverage Entry Tool (you never know when you might need to open a brew!), nail clippers, a multi-tool, a knife sharpener (DMT), and various odds and ends (sunglasses, phone charger, etc.). I always have a Strider SMF and a Leatherman Micratool in my pockets, and unless I'm at work there is a Glock (22, 23, or 26 depending on clothing and mood) in a Minotaur MTAC on my hip. A spare mag rides on the opposite hip, and if I'm gone over night I'll throw a couple more spare mags in the backpack.
