what essential survival gear do you keep in your Runner?

I have posted about this previously, so I already had a list and pics which follow. Since there are not only earthquakes in SoCal but also because I off road in remote areas pretty frequently I usually carry a large North Face backpack with a ton of backpacking/camping/survival gear. I also carry in my car recovery gear in a 2nd backpack (shackles, straps etc...), an extremely well equipped set of tools, a few other flashlights, knives, pens, etc. When off roading in remote areas I also carry various weight oil, ATF, and various spare parts.

Also, depending on what I am up to that day may have scuba gear, spearfishing gear etc... in my truck as well (or a number of other random things).

I always carry a flashlight, thermal blanket, first aid kit, knife.

This. I'm not very paranoid.

I'm not sure why you guys need all this stuff, or would want it. Do you all live in a rural town where it's several miles to gas stations and supermarkets? Can't you just call a friend to pick you up if the 4Runner breaks down for whatever reason, instead of hiking? What could possible happen where you would need a sleeping bag, 5lbs of food, and 3 flashlights? I'm confused.

OK I can answer this pretty easily. I live in So Cal and surrounded by the gas stations, supermarkets etc. In an actual crisis or catastrophy as a major earhtquake roads will be difficult or impossible to travel, cell and land lines usually get immediately clogged and over burdened so calling a friend isnt going to happen. Also in a truely major disaster unless you are armed(some kind of personal defense, knife, firearm, mace, tomahawk) others will be gladly taking your supplies from you. several years ago we had a major earthquake in the Bay area and had bridges collapse and some people were able to survive several days in their crushed cars with simple things like a blanket, water, energy bars.

Daily driving- First aid kit, silver survival blanket, handfull of cliff bars and a couple bottles of water, knife and flashlights. I have a HAM and CB radios in my truck. I believe it is usually best to stay with your vehicle however in some cases you may need to leave to avoid further injury.

Wheeling(even a short day trip) tools, spare fluids and most of what others have mentioned including the sleeping bag. You never know when Murphy will hit and leave you stranded on the trail overnight.

Whenever I'd go out exploring or wheeling I always take a bag with some things like GPS, snacks, water, knives, First Aid kit, compass, Glock.

We had a storm hit a couple of weeks ago and a family got stuck in a snow drift in Northeast New Mexico for a couple of days in their SUV until a snow plow found them. One had pneumonia but they all survived. This incident and this thread has inspired me. I hear too many stories about people traveling and ending up down some old forest road and disappear. Granted, sometimes they have lost their minds, but who knows, that could be me someday. lol

I am now starting to put together some kits for both my wife's and my vehicle.

THINGS I NEED:
Paracord, duct tape(best thing ever invented), sleeping platform(will be built once my bathroom cabinets are built), axe, throw the Czech M10M in there for the hell of it, better lighting, especially for reversing.
The most important things I need are a first aid kit(which I should have as I'm in the fire dept., tisk tisk.), and an emergency kit with flares and also some collapsible traffic cones. I would also like to put some spare clothes in. I have some spare shirts and socks in my bunker gear bag, but nothing heavy enough. Should an emergency situation arise, I COULD use the bunker gear, but it isn't the warmest unless you're on a hose line doing work.

I posted this in the 4runner & bug out bag thread, but it seems to be more relevant here. This is a page I threw together for my workmates and family. I have a Get to vehicle bag (G2VB) and a get home bag (GHB). There I have my Bug out bags (BOBs) for the family and I.
No matter how large or small the area you live in is, you can never predict what may happen. You should always be prepared as best possible. Better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

I agree. I live in NYC& I have BOB's and survival gear and get made fun of all the time by my family & friends. Well, let me say GOT made fun of. Now, they are calling me for my campstoves and butane heaters, flashlights & propane tanks. I have been accommodating (I never turned down a friend or a stranger in need), but lets just say they are eating their words!

Where did you get the seat cover holster? That is awesome. I use a drop leg mostly, but I could see that being very handy. Oh, and is the band for extra mags?
