What have you had to replace

just hit 90k miles this week .Im going to change trans filter and fluid ,front rear diff, and transfer case oil tomorrow.other than that oil and filter changes at 5kmiles, sparkplugs and replaced factory tires@46kmiles with g/y duratracs and still have plenty of tread.thats it nothing else !!! best vehicle I'v owned extremly dependable . 07 sr5 v6 4x4 3rd row seat sandstone mica

100,000 km

changed transmission fluild, rear, front, and transfer case fluid, at 100,000 km
changed front brakes at 100,000 km
of course, your usual air filter, spark plug, etc at regular interval

Are the 4th gens less reliable than the older models?

Cause of a ball joint? Really? It's a rubber boot. It's a wear item. Luckily they're not hard to replace on these trucks. Anything rubber is going to be a wear item and need replaced after about 10-15 years and a number of miles.

My runner is an 04 V6 with 99k and I've replaced oil and filters. I did all the fluids at 90k just for peace of mind. Out of non-necessity I did the radio, front lift, etc.

Holy crap you guys have had a serious lot of repairs!!!!! calipers at 95k........., AC compressor work......... a Tranny at 75k miles? What happened to toyata reliability. You guys have me terrified I made a big mistake with my 05 I just got!

We put a tranny at 90k in my wifes 02 Deville and that upset me for being such a POS!

What Im hearing is not what I consider reliable.....sure every car needs pads, belts hoses, plugs wires, wipers the occasional CV Boot or ball joint, maybe some exhaust if you have salt on the roads but not some of this bigger item stuff....

Calm down son, thousands of owners pass through this forum every day, and this thread has been going since October. The people who come here are enthusiasts or people having trouble, not a good representation of the masses who drive 4Runners. If you spent a day at any service station, you'd think every car has major problems by this reasoning. I've been an automotive engineer and enthusiast for a long time, I did my homework when I chose this vehicle, it's more reliable than most.

The question on reliability wasn't specifically becuase of my ball joint, and it would seem the lower ball joint is not a common failure on this model.

It wasn't the boot that wore, it was the joint itself. There was nothing wrong with the boot, joint that had developed too much free play. I understand chaning the boot isn't a big deal, but Toyota want well over $2000 to change the lower ball joint, mainly because they don't sell the joint seperately and want to sell you a whole new control arm.

I have certainly been satisfied with the reliabillity of my truck.

Good enough, I go by experience, you've got to understand I am coming from a 13 year old vehicle with 303k that has never broken down, never been towed, never not started. Ive replaced the timing belt 3 times, struts 3 times, exhaust (cat back) 3 times, one o2 sensor and a ball joint that went bad 6 months after I had a front end repair where the truck was hit by someone else. Other things like pads shoes belts hoses plugs fluids have all been done but thats it. Original rotors, calipers, tranny, waterpump radiator heater core blower motor catz.....everything is still original and still working. Biggest issue I ever had was the sunroof vent plugged up and the interior got wet... so when I hear about expensive repairs on the vehicle i just bought...... well you get it.

2003 V8 4X4 79,000 miles

replaced front pads
AC compressor went out at 74k, cost $1,900
had front rear and center fluids changed when it was in for the AC compressor
CV boot clamp came loose at 77K
Same clamp came loose again at 79k. Had CV axle pulled and repacked with grease and new boot. Now I have a strange noise coming from the front. It was louder right after the repair. Seems to be going away. Took back to dealer and they say everything is ok.

Needs rear brakes done now. Dealer says I should replace rotors at the same time. I think they should just turn them? Why replace? The front brake rotors are warped again. Going to go aftermarket with these soon.

The $1,900 AC compressor going out before 100K left a bad taste in my mouth. One more big expense like that may change my mind about driving an older car to avoid having car payments. Truck has been great up to the 74K mark. Nothing but routine maintenance, but I have had GM cars with 140K before they needed a $1,900 repair. In a GM that is the cost of a transmission rebuild.

I still love the 4R, there is no other sport utility on the market I would consider buying at the moment. Until that happens I will keep driving it.

Yeah, I know. I've run a bunch of cars over 200k with a brake caliper my biggest repair. But the forums on those cars usually have someone, somewhere, needing a new engine or transmission. Looking through the enthusiast forums can give you an idea of what breaks. If something expensive is breaking on a lot of stock trucks that's a concern, vs failing U-joints on lifted and boosted trucks.

108xxxkms (67K miles) on mine. Had it about 2.5 yrs now and put on 40xxxkms (25K miles) myself, other than PM I think one of the bottom latches of the back seat seatbelts just gave up on me. No doubt the result of my 2 little girls with their small toys/snacks that probably jammed up inside.
Oh yeah, 2 turn signal bulbs too (i know.. i know.. POS ;):)

Service history from the dealer when I bought it certified used showed no issues before me either.

121,000 kms now, turns out whatever jammed the seatbelt latch must've cleared itself up as it all works now. So I'm retracting my earlier statement and haven't had to replace anything!

I love Toyotas!

About 95,000 miles. Other than the usual maintenance stuff, all four calipers, both front wheel bearings, and a hose and gasket from the AC system. Oh, and the mag clutch replay for the AC.

Add to this CV boots on one side, and about to do lower ball joint boot on one side.

More to add:

A little over 100,000 miles: tranny leak, which fried a wireing harness (threw CEL and VSC and TRAC OFF lights), one of the front axle seals and the crank seal are seeping.
