What is a 1st gen anyway?

The only thing wrong with the 2nd gen is the 3.0 engine. Not a bad engine, but not a powerful engine. Yes the first gen can go topless. What good does that do you? It does two things: 1. Make you not as hot without the air conditioning. 2. Give you a better view around you. I use to own a Jeep CJ 7. It was to hot in the summer with the top on, and too cold in the winter with the top on. It just was not insulated the way it should have been. I had a lot of fun with it, but having a removable top does have its down sides.

Now I would not buy a second gen again, but stop using the removable top as your excuse. It isn't that big of a deal. Use the mechanics as an excuse, or anything else that is reasonable. Just don't hide behind the stupid top.

I disagree. the removable top is a big deal.
im not sure of any downsides.
my first gen HAS ac, so that's a non-issue. it also has an amazing heater, TWO of them actually. even if its cold out, and the top is off, i'll stay warm. also unlike the jeep, the cab is covered with a 1st gen. its far superior to a jeep... :D

you cant compare a 1st gen Toyota with a jeep..any jeep. not even close to the same thing.

The hard top on a Jeep and a hard top on a Toyota are the same thing. The only difference is the position of the split. Yes you have a heater that works and keeps you warm with a hard top, but it has to work harder and takes more power than a heater in vehicle without a removable top. Do you rock crawl with your 1st gen? Because if that is the case, the 1st gen and the second gen serve completely different prepossess. You can't compare an orange and an apple can you? There is no doubt that the 2nd and 3rd gens are more of a family vehicle than the 1st gen. The have more comforts that come standard.

I dropped the universally agreed fact that the 3rd gen is superior to the... 2nd gen..., and left the 1st gen out of it.

Regardless, we all have our preferences to certain gens here, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Let's be honest. The '86-'95 trucks have the same wheelbase, similar(?) frame, same front suspension, same engine choice ignoring the turbo models, and different rear suspension and transfer cases. They're quite similar vehicles. It all comes down to whether you prefer the retro 80's hard lines and pop-top, or the passenger convenience of 4 doors, and interior differences.

Cosmetically superior? Matter of opinion. Mechanically superior? Depends on how much you bother to care about leafs vs coils in the back, and gear vs chain driven transfer cases.

We should all be happy we don't drive the rattletrap unibody $5 suv that is: The Jeep Cherokee (xj).

^ This. The entire argument is ridiculous, and thus funny, because there really is no practical difference between the trucks. FoG's got it right - the name of the game is outrageous, over-the-top indignation. Anybody actually getting butthurt is missing the point.

Typical second gen owner, I'm sure. :der:

I've had a friend jump in my topless 4runner while moving without even knowing he was around. A group of mobile teenagers threw a slushie in my truck one time and got chased down. Must've been kind of terrifying for 4 guys in a first gen - 2 of them standing and holding on the roll bar - to be tailing them. You just don't get this kind of hooliganage in a 2nd gen

you must have missed it, I have TWO heaters. :D and they are both awesome.
also, I don't think the tops are not the same. jeep tops seem very thin and flimsy, not so much with the Toyota.
 
Brothas, brothas, brothas. We all need to rise up and stand TOGETHA. I HAVE A DREAM that one day little black 2nd gens can play with little white 1st gens can wheel together and not have to worry about the prejudice that is the t4r classics sub forum.



Jeeps still suck :D
