Y'know, the tailgate is pretty heavy and I still haven't figured out how to close it without looking like I'm having a fit. To make matters worse, that strap inside is utterly useless in helping pull it down. You end up on the ground before it's anywhere near closed.

a lot of california drivers don't fill that void actually. at least, from when i lived there

Depends on where you are and how slow you're going in my experience. At 50mph I find everyone tailgates here in the Bat Area, probably out of impatience. At 70mph far fewer do. You still get idiots weaving in and out, of course, and CA drivers suck in many different ways. Many seem to become retarded when it rains, for example.

No 'mist' feature for the wipers. You have to turn the wipers on and then off to clear the windows of light mist. WTF?

The auto-locking feature (when you put the vehicle in gear) on the doors is somewhat annyoing, but hardly worth mentioning. I have gotten to the point where I unlock all the doors by reflex action when I arrive home with groceries in the back seat or hatch area.

You realize that you can turn that off yourself, right?

I forgot about that one! I guess I don't miss it much now, but that was one of the first things I noticed when I picked up my 4Runner.

My Highlander had it, my Echo and Corolla loaners have had it, why doesn't the 4Runner have it?

what californian goes under 70 on the highway though.. you should know flow of traffic is right around 80.. haha..

but yeah, i'd have to say drivers in california are a lot of defensive than in colorado, where i think that people are aggressive. one state i've been to that i've seen cars with temp plates wrecked already. granted it could happen, but its a bit to frequent.. to be honest, i'm sometimes afraid to stop at stoplights there in fear of getting rear ended. too many yellow light chasers which end up being at least 3 red light runners.

true, cali drivers don't slow down in the rain. but insurance rates are still cheaper there. when we moved to colorado, same drivers, same insurance company, same cars, same policy.. no changes except for location, the insurance rates tripled. we asked the insurance company why, and they said location. colorado has way too high a rate of fatal accidents and claims..

Not to many gripes but here goes. Door switches piss me off, but like someone said, they're in such a shitty place you wouldn't see them if they were lit up.

The sunroof decreases the roof by ?2? inches. Needs some more head space. I hate the location of the parking brake. I just love how when I move my seat to avoid the roof I end up with the parking break at my shin.

Double layer cargo thingee gets on my nerves. It should have a up position so it can lock up flush against the back seat so it can be a hard back for cloth covered seat backs. I have a husky liner for the back but no liner for seat back.

On the lighter side of things it beaps at me when I'm doing donuts. Hell I've heard of back seat drives and bitching wives, but now my vehicle nags me as well? What's up with that!

Damnable VSC/traction control/"feature" got me in the mountains on Saturday. I was in a series of fun switchbacks with hard right, off-camber rough pavement uphill turns. I would romp on the gas and crank the steering wheel hard and then...............

....the stupid truck would slow down!!!! The Nag-O-Meter yellow swervy light came on in the dash to tell me how "safe" I was.


Yeah, right.

1. The cheap headliner, feels like cardboard with fur.
2. The stupid bin/pocket below HVAC controls, might as well have it glued shut.
3. No two teir armrest storage.
4. Maplights doesn't turn on, makes the front seats dark at night. Our '90 Toyota truck had a switch to activate both maplights when the door is opened, why doesn't a $40k truck 13-16 years later have it.

Those plus some of the aforementioned by members are pretty much it. Most are relatively minor. I wouldn't have it any other way, and still would buy the 4R in a heartbeat even with these shortcomings. It could be a whole lot worst with another SUV. :

At first I thought the window switches should be better located and lit but after getting used to the location I can now just reach down and control the windows without even looking. I now see Toyota's design logic for these controls. They don't what you looking down for lit buttons. If you think about it, they force you to operate them safely. This also goes for most all the controls, for me. After some time they work logically, just give them some time. I

Really? I've actually grown quite fond of the system. For whatever reason, the "same" system in my 05 Ltd sounded WAAAAY better and had a TON more bass than the one in my 03. I dunno if they changed something year-to-year, or if it's just a question of hitting it lucky tho?

You have to remember that the safety features (VSC, brake assist, brake distribution, ABS, etc. are designed for the majority of people who CAN"T react correctly in an emergency. Also these features do things that can not be dome by normal operation during an emergency. The great safety blanket/systems are worth the minor inconvenience of the quirks associated with them.

100% agree....HOWEVER, I do wish there was some sequence you could go through to lock the systems out when you wanted to tear up a logging road or get it all bent in the snow. If it was a bit of a procedure, chances are very good that the people who need these systems couldn't be bothered to disable them anyways.

The horizontal space between the gas pedal and the brake. Noticed this on my wife's 04 and it is same on 06. I have large feet but often when going from the floor or brake to the gas I clip the edge of the brake pedal - people behind me must wonder if I can drive.

I've never had this problem with any other vehicle so I think Toyota is different in this way. Took off the brake pedal cover and it may give me a quarter inch or so. Also got rid of carpet mat and went to Husky mats - that my reduce the space from floor to pedal a bit as well.

Re: Least favorite thing

Simple - air recirculation. If I could figure out how to disconnect that feature, I would. I hate it when all I want is outside air coming in, and I turn the temp to LO, and the recirculate feature gets turned on by default. Hate it. And it stays that way when I turn the truck off and then on again. Did I say I hate that?

And no lights on the Homelink buttons.

These 2 are on my list, I hate that recirc button. Everytime it rains a little, the truck will start to fog up. I'll look down, and yep, the recirc is on again. Turn it off, and then turn the truck off. Come back, start driving, and start fogging up again.

And the homelink buttons would be so easy for them to put some LEDs in there. But for some reason they decided not too.

oh ya, the window switches not being lit is annoying too. The one that is lit, is so dim you can't see it. So I'm always feeling around hoping I got the right one.
