What?? Limited slip??

We got a foot of really wet snow last night, accompanied by 30 MPH winds & some pretty good drifting. I decided to pull the plug on the ATRAC/VSC/ABS as referenced in several threads on the forums here and see how it fared. As much as I hate the way the ATRAC brakes & slows forward momentum, in last nights conditions (the snow was like driving through wet cement) it was better with the all the electronics on, t-case locked, and spinning 2500 rpm to keep the tires cleaned out. Just so I don't get flamed, I was in my own rural, hilly neighborhood, not breaking any laws, it was after midnight and nobody else was out.

I'll probably add the switch so I can turn the ATRAC off for those times when it is a nuisance, like sand where it can get you stuck. But for rockcrawling, or more typical snowfalls, the ATRAC is pretty handy, and it's easy to forget how cool ABS is in the snow & ice.

And for anyone confused by which electronics are which, ATRAC uses the ABS to slow the spinning wheels, and cut fuel if necessary. It will allow all 4 wheels to bite & churn. VSC prevents you from spinning out when you lift off the gas in a snowy corner, or get going a little too fast on gravel washboard & the rear dances out. The first time it goes off, the alarm will startle you. Before we got the T4R, we had a 98 Jeep Cherokee & 98 Chevy Blazer, and the 'Yota is unbelievably more stable & safe due to the VSC. With all-terrain tires, the VSC rarely activates.

One last thing, Thai, I agree with you about Firestone, I have the AT's and feel they are equal to the BFG AT KO, for less money. Aired down to 18 psi they are sweet in the rocks, and bad washboard feels like fresh blacktop. How are the MT's in the rain?

My VSC beep damn near consistantly when I'm out driving. Annoying as hell IMO.

The 4R has some really great points of their 4x4 system and some real crap points to it too.

Hey Falls, I see you have the V8 which has to make a big difference, we've got an older '01 with V6. Even though it has the Sport Package with 4.10's, it's kind of a dog. My Avalon on the other hand will smoke the tires at will. It also has the TRAC OFF switch on the dash, and it's the first thing I do after I turn the key. I have to merge into heavy traffic each am, and if I forget to shut it off, the traction control kicks in at the slightest hint of tire slip and cuts the gas, definitely the opposite of a safety feature in that situation.

Thai, how about those MT's in the rain? I understand most MT's are practically unsafe in the rain?

Falls and I had some posts on the subject of not being able to spin the tires when you want to on the 4runner and this is a good let down that I think yota needs to make a change to on the next gen runner.

In deep wet snow when pulling out in trafic there is nothing worse then flooring it and the truck digs down and just slowly moves out when you know if it could clear the tires it would grab and go.

This is why I have a good open tread A/T tire so they clear wet snow in the winter ........ It helps a great deal (there is nothing better than a great tire for your rig.)

It does fine in the rain...not as good as highway tires, but good enough, esp. if you have stability control. The compound in the Firestones does well in rain. More and more M/Ts are now more suitable for all-season because more and more of them are now more civilized. BFG AT KO used to be my favorite tire, but after owning Firestone MTs, i do not ever see myself going back to AT. I love it that much!

It seems like many A/T tires (not all) are going more main stream all season tire and the M/T's of today (not all) are better for anyone doing any off road as well as the trip on the road as well.

Exactly. The ATs nowadays are no more than glorified highway tires.:( A few M/Ts nowadays are more ATs too.
