What model to get???

Hello all and thank you for your opinions in advance. I have read all the info and I am more confused than ever.

I have a 2007 Sports Edition 4x4 V8. I love my truck but it's getting a little long in the tooth. I love the full time all wheel drive. I'm looking to upgrade to a newer 4runner and I'm not sure what 5th gen to go with. I'm looking for something comparable to what I currently drive.

I wanted to get the feedback, suggestions, and the pro's and con's of the various models. I chose to post this here because of you, the members on here have more usable information than the Toyota website and YouTube. LOL.

Please ask any questions you need to help me narrow my search.

get a GX460 - similar v8, same awd and center lock diff. the only big diff is the barn door on the GX. no 5th gen will have a v8.

what's your main purpose? I have a SR5 and works for me for snow driving and occasional off roading and going to the beach and camping. I'll be using it for occasional overlanding and the 4 wheel drive system is very capable.

Ok for me this is what I looked at...

SR5 Premium 4x4:
Part time 4WD, Nav. Non-Auto Climate Control, 17"-70 tires, 3 interior color choices in Sof-Tex. (actually pretty nice material and I had Mercedes with leather for about 15 years prior to buying my 4R)

Now add about $4500 ....

Limited 4x4:
Leather in several colors , 20" low profile tires/rims, XREAS, Full Time 4WD, Automatic Climate Control, JBL, Autostart.

I looked at the TRD Off Road Premium. It has some fancy traction gizmos like a locking rear diff. and "Crawl Control" none of which I would use often or ever. Also its got so much "blacked out" crap on it and a fake hood scoop and a black interior only I scratched it off the list.

I chose the SR5P with a sunroof. Sometimes I wish I had bought the Limited for the Automatic Climate Control.

I dont know who could drive any of the Lexus GX models. They are one of the most ugly vehicles I have seen and the 4Runner is not prom queen either.

As others have said, it depends on what you want to do with it. For me, I do some serious off roading and wanted to get the TRD Off Road or Pro. But my son wanted me to get the third row seating for the grand kids (third row seats are not available on the Off Road or Pro). When I was in the market (2018), third row seats were hard to come by; they just didn't make many of them. My dealer happened to get a silver SR5 Premium with three row seats which I bought. I upgraded the tires to BFG KO2 and put in a leveling kit which gave some more ground clearance for off roading. Couldn't be happier. And the grand kids love being in the back when we go off roading.

Then get a limited.

If you need the power, put a supercharger on it.

Or look at a used GX460 as mentioned.

To the OP, if the full-time AWD is important, your only option is Limited.

There are a couple new trim levels that offer a different combination of options and some optionality in colors (cement, lunar rock, etc)

Take your time and go through your checklist. There's no V8 in the 4R anymore, so that takes an option off the list.

Take your time and pick the options that are the best fit. Hard to go wrong.

Thanks for correcting. I wrote what I know off the top my had take that with a grain of salt. When I bought mine I test drove all the models I was interested in and that would be a better.

Actually, he is right. SR5P does not come with crawl control. Also, despite your description, it does not come with leather either.

I could be wrong but I 4wheel with a friend who has sr5p and He does have crawl control.

Perhaps you are confusing crawl control with downhill assist? Crawl control is not available on any SR5 trim.

Another vote for the limited! Get the all the creature comforts plus the full time 4wd, and upgrade its off-road capabilities as needed. Good luck!
