What model to get???

HAC ( hill start control)
DAC ( down hill Assist control)
it does not have crawl control.

Agree with several posts that if you want full-time 4WD/all wheel drive the Limited is your only choice.

I have a 2018 Limited and have not had any issues overlanding/mild off roading with stock equipment. Seldom have really needed 4 low/center diff lock.

I considered a GX460 as I could have gotten a one or two year old for the same price. Decided on the Limited for the following. I needed more of a truck and maximum cargo space thus my Limited does not have the 3rd row. The side fold up seats on GX460 take up significant space and you can not get one without the 3rd row. (Similarly the folded 3rd row in a 4Runner takes up some space but to a lesser degree.) The body panels on the GX460 reduce ground clearance an inch or so. Lastly, the 4Runner flip up versus GX460 side opening hatch is so much more convenient and practical for my use.

I did consider the V8 in the GX460 as I do miss the V8 in my 2003 4Runner. However, didn't experience significantly more day to day power advantages with the GX460, given the additional weight of the GX, not to mention the lower gas mileage particularly in town.

Bottom line, the Limited is not necessarily a better vehicle than the GX460, nor the other 4Runner models. The Limited was the best choice for my needs.

I was literally on the Toyota website correcting you. Also, you can buy a Limited in 4x2 (2WD model), but you cannot drive a 4wd Limited in a 4x2 mode. Doesn't have the ability. Standard torque bias is 60/40 Rear/Front.

Let's try to get accurate info out to people.

Unless I completely missed something, the SR5 Premium does not have CRAWL. The Venture does, however.

Nightshade does not have a rear diff locker. It's a Limited with some visual upgrades/changes.

Limited 4WD models do not give you an option to drive in 4x2. Full time AWD.



To the OP, if the full-time AWD is important, your only option is Limited.

There are a couple new trim levels that offer a different combination of options and some optionality in colors (cement, lunar rock, etc)

Take your time and go through your checklist. There's no V8 in the 4R anymore, so that takes an option off the list.

Take your time and pick the options that are the best fit. Hard to go wrong.

This is the best advice I have seen, just compare the options that you want/need before you make your purchase.
Keep in mind that if you get the 2021 model year and you lift it, the pre-collison system will be useless. Dealers won't re-aim the system on a lifted vehicle. I have a 2019 TRD Off Road Premium and am happy but it may not be for everybody. If the AWD is the most important thing then you are stuck with the Limited.

OP, just to get more info, what is it you like about the full-time AWD? What driving conditions do you encounter (snow, ice, rain, none of these?)?
 
Take location into account if you want to know if full time 4wd or the limited is worth it. Where I live, SC, total waste of fuel. I’m already pushing 18 combined. I don’t need full time 4wd. I think as far as limited goes, that’s the main thing to consider. Do you need that extra power and traction at the cost of fuel?

This argument is very flawed. It's like people still saying that manual cars get better mpg than automatics.

There's no difference between MPG ratings between the part-time and full-time 4wd systems. Even if it were a full mpg difference, you're talking about 600 gallons over the course of 200k miles.

And if you look through Fuelly, you'll see that reflected with the data there.

A couple of things to consider here:
Its worth noting that a lot folks considering the limited are probably less likely to mod it, so I’m guessing we tend to see much better MPG at the end of the day. Without focusing on off-roading capabilities, all the creature comforts are much more important to me:
Full time-4wd: snow, sand, rain, mud, trails. Lots of mixed terrain.
Heated/vented *leather* seats
Moon roof
Premium JBL audio (which I like a great deal)
Parking radar/warn
Dual climate control

All pretty great for folks who spend a bit of time on the road. Im getting 18-21 in my bone stock LE Nightshade, which matters to me because I drive across the country from time to time.
 
I was looking at them but I can't stand the 20 inch wheels. I'd have to change them out. Thanks for the suggestion and it is one of my options.
 
I use it as a daily driver but I do a lot of driving in sand, mud, and flooded roads. I am leaning toward the SR5. Any drawbacks from your experience in snow?
 
To the OP, since you commented how much you like full time AWD, I agree with others here that the Limited will probably make you the happiest.

As for crawl, I'm not sure, but I THINK it was available on the SR5 when I bought my 2019 TRDOR. If Toyota changed this, maybe that is adding to the confusion? It really is an exercise to find out what options are available on what models. If you go to the Toyota website and try to build one, that may be the easiest way to find out what you can get on what base model.

Anyway, I would guess the Limited will be a fit. Happy hunting!

I don't care too much about the fancy bells and whistles. I don't care about the safety sense and blind spot monitoring types of options.
I love the All-Wheel because I live in Florida and in the summer it rains buckets. The AWD is great in torrential down pours, driving through 6 to 10 inches of sugar sand, flooded roads. I visit family in colder climates and it has been great in ice , sleet, and snow.
It is my daily driver. I do camp, hike, hunt, and fish. I get into some rough places where I need the four wheel drive and the lockers are definitely one of those options I want. I don't care about the gas mileage. I want something that will tackle any condition I will encounter. I started looking at the limited but hate the 20 inch rims they would have to go for some 17's and a all terrain tire. It seams like Toyota just doesn't make one 4runner like my 07, there are going to be trade offs. Hope this helps you help me narrow this down a bit more.

When I was in Florida during December on the sand back roads .. again I didnt have any concerns.

No. It is not. Never has been. They haven't changed that.

SR5s have Hill Start Assist and Downhill Assist Control. Completely different systems. CRAWL and MTS only available on TRDOR, Pro, and Venture models.

Switching the 20" wheels over to 17" on the limited wouldn't be that big of a deal, but if you're not big on bells and whistles, an SR5 is MORE than capable in the conditions you mentioned.

Throw some good tires on and you should be fine with all conditions. Biggest concern in rain is hydroplaning. Good tires and keeping speed down are the answers there. I have the part time system on my ORP and it was just fine in the Nor'Easter we just got here in NY.

This says Off Road Package to me.
 
On the 21 models can you turn off safety sense and lane assist? And will it stay off when you turn the car back on?
