What rubs more: 285/75/17 or 295/70/17?

I’m guessing both would rub about the same, as one is slightly talller and the other is slightly wider.

I would prefer the narrower (285/75/17) just for driving dynamics, but not if it’s harder to fit...

glad you asked this as i was in a similar boat...

My guess is the 285/75 is harder to fit being a taller tire.

But.....thats why i am here too :mmph:

It probably doesn't matter, both are going to require a BMC and fender liner mod. I guess you can either choose less than half an inch of width or 1/4 inch of ground clearance. Seems to me at that point it all comes down to price.

I run 285/75/17 Ridge Grapplers. I don't consider the fitment/rubbing significantly different than 285/70's. To explain, when I switched to the larger size I didn't have to change anything. That being said I do have my body mounts chopped and fenders trimmed and I do have after market UCA's adjusted to about 4 degrees caster. No rubbing even on full compression
IMO the fitment of the 295/70 would be more difficult as the width seems to aggravate things more, although I've never run them.
To me the additional height/clearance is more valuable than the additional width.

Thanks, your reply is very helpful. I agree, height is nice but I don’t need more width than 285, and that would probably make it drive worse on the road.

Now I’m just not sure if I’d want 285/75 because then the gearing will be more off. Honesty I don’t mind trimming etc, but regearing will cost thousands.

Your spare fits in the spot right? Just have to deflate it a lot?

I did re gear after going to 285/75's. Best thing I ever did. It would have helped with 285/70's too
285/75 Ridge Grappler is a no go in the spare location even deflated. However a 285/70 fits fine and I didn't have a problem running it for short distances till I got the 285/75 repaired. Now I carry a 285/75 on the rear bumper. A 285 in the OEM spare tire location will drag much easier
Not sure what tires you run now but IMHO the tire load range has a lot to do with on road ride quality too.
Bottom line. I don't think the extra .55" of clearance from a 285/70 to 285/75 matters that much unless you are doing some serious crawling.

Ah man, you are swaying me back towards the 285/70/17. Really, I only want larger bc it would be cooler and more unique, but it’s def heavier and the regear is imminent. Also I don’t want to get a rear tire carrier now.

I have 265/70/17 KO2’s and maybe a 2.5-3” lift and just felt they looked small. Was thinking 285/70 might still look a little small haha. But it’s my DD so 285/70 prob makes sense. Small accentuates the “lifted” look too haha

Don't get me wrong I like the 285/75's too. Had them for about 2 years now. Going to be considerably heavier though. About 20# a tire That's a lot of rotational mass to add. And they are really spendy

Nice looking rig btw. I couldn't find the "Like" button or I would have done that

I'm running Nitto RG 285/75/17. I've got a full-size spare in the OEM location. No deflating necessary. Though it does hang down pretty far.

Maybe try a 275?

Everything comtn4x4 said, including the spare tire storage issue. I've been running 285/75 Cooper ST/Maxx for quite some time and haven't had any rubbing issues, but I had already done the BMC and fender trim years ago when I went to 285/70.

All tires are not created equal with regard to rolling radius relative to tire size. The coopers run larger diameter than most tires for their respective size. I get a true 34" and it will not fit in the spare tire well. I carry a 285/70 BFG KM2 in there, which is tight, but it fits. A 285/70 Cooper will not fit.

Is that front 5100 at the stock height notch setting? Or higher? If it's stock then those Dobinson's are doing a hellofa job lifting that front end.

Wheel offset will play a major role in the amount of rub you get. dot_tom may have an answer for you. He’s running 17x9 -38mm with 295/70R17

Thanks hopefully I can help.

First, we need to know what tire he is planning to run. KO2, RG, KM3? All of these have completely different real-world sizes.

KO2 in 285/75 is a lot easier to fit than a Nitto RG in 295/70.

295/70 KM3 is easier to fit than a 295/70 Nitto RG.

285/70 Nitto RG is a good bit bigger than a 285/70 KO2.

IMO a 285/75 is easier to fit than a 295/70 since a wider tire sticks out further and the "poke" of the tire will get into your fenders, body mount, pinch weld, and plastics more than a taller more narrow tire.

I am running 17x9 -38 F5s and even with the 295/70 Nitto RG's it wasn't very hard to get these to fit. BMC and some trimming on some plastic and you're good to go.

My advice, by the wheels and tires you want and make them fit. There are so many people running so many options it's really just up to what you want. You don't run into needing a hammer until 305's :P

All BFG's run really small. Here is my 35 KM3 next to my used 295/70 RGs.

I literally posted the same conclusion as you did, so I deleted my post. I agree, buy the tire you want to make it fit, because the cost of making the tire fit is going to be the same between those two sizes, so might as well get the tire that you want in the first place, or you will have buyers remorse.

I'm running 285/75R17 Ridge Grapplers on my 4runner with no body mount chop and still have the factory mud flaps. They have polished off little sections of paint on the upper control arms at full lock but you can't hear any hard rubbing or see any kind of tire damage. I'm running the stock rims as well. At full stuff you could see in the top of the inner fender where they just barely kissed and are pretty much perfect fit.

I've put lots of miles on this set up and a good bit of wheeling as well. I have added some toytech spacers to the top of my OME medium coil and shock because I wanted to even out the serious amount of rake I had. Prior to that I drove a lot and had the driver side mud flap did get a hole worn through it in Moab but no rubbing on hard parts.

Did you do/need a re-gear ?

Thanks
