What rubs more: 285/75/17 or 295/70/17?

Im running 285/70/17 Pathfinder A/T

1.5" spacer up front/stock rear. I took off the mudflaps and haven't rubbed since.

I'll get around to throwing in a set of 4.56 gears. But I am currently running stock gears and have wheeled quite a bit as well as put on a lot of miles, I'm almost due for a new set of tires and will be going to a set of 295 km3s

I'm running 285/75R17 Ridge Grapplers on my 4runner with no body mount chop and still have the factory mud flaps. They have polished off little sections of paint on the upper control arms at full lock but you can't hear any hard rubbing or see any kind of tire damage. I'm running the stock rims as well. At full stuff you could see in the top of the inner fender where they just barely kissed and are pretty much perfect fit.

I've put lots of miles on this set up and a good bit of wheeling as well. I have added some toytech spacers to the top of my OME medium coil and shock because I wanted to even out the serious amount of rake I had. Prior to that I drove a lot and had the driver side mud flap did get a hole worn through it in Moab but no rubbing on hard parts.

Yep, stock rims with no spacers. They just polish the paint off the front of the upper A-arms at full lock. But other than that its all good.

That is bananas. My 285/75/17 Toyo Open Country AT2 Extremes are on wheels with only 3mm less offset than stock and they hit EVERYTHING. I've been chopping chunks off for weeks. My wheel is wider though, and obviously not all tires measure out the same.

This member: 2016 4Runner sr5 has no BMC either...I have attached below what he told me his setup was. FWIW he is running FN FX Pro wheels.


I do not have a build thread on it. Wheels are 17x8 with 4.5 BS and 0 offset. Suspension is 2.5" up front and 1.5" in the back but will soon be 2" in the back. Tires are Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 295/70/17 and I am running stock upper control arms. All I did was the fender liner mod and bumper trim, no BMC was required.

This actually doesn’t surprise me because, contrary to what’s been stated here, my 285/70 BFG KO2 (Load C) were larger than my Nitto RGs of the same size. In fact, these 285/70 RGs measure out at 32” by about 9” of contact patch. They looks so small and ridiculous that I was considering upsizing to 285/75 just so it looks right. With the amount of space I have now (2.5/1.5 lift) I’m 100% confident I could fit 285/75 without any issue in the Ridge Grappler. Plastics have been trimmed but I’m clear for days on my body mount.

Offset is a major contributing factor. I just made my first wheeling trip with 17x9 -38 offset wheels on 285/70 KO2s and had some minor rubbing when the driver side tire was stuffed on the plastic rocker cap. The mudflaps are removed. Extreme BMC. Lots of plastic and fender liner cutting. That said, a 285/75 or 295 would fit no problem.
