What Should I Do?

Hey everybody,

My 05 just passed 93k and it is coming time for the big V8 service. The timing belt, spark plugs, etc have to be replaced which is costly. From what I heard, the service goes anywhere from $1200-$1500. I cannot do this service by myself because of time constraints and inexperience! My truck is almost 6.5 years old but still runs amazing. I know this may sound like a stupid question, but should I put that much money into the vehicle? Of course it is a Toyota but my platinum extended warranty expires in 6/2012. What would you do? Thanks for the advice!

Its a matter if you want to keep it honestly, if not then sell it to someone who will want to keep it for longer and who will invest the money.

But the 90k Service will be a good thing for your Rig and if you intend to keep it a worthwhile investment IMO.

Do the spark plugs, fuel filter, air fliter, and various other jobs yourself, and then go around to a few places and get the lowest quote on the timing belt job, it will save you a bit of splash not having to pay for the misc jobs in the 90k service.

I plan on keeping the truck at least 3 more years. Thanks for the advice so far. I am still pricing the parts/labor at different dealers.

Change the belt and water pump $600-$800.. You knew this was going to be an issue when you bought it in 05. Why all the sudden is this big news? Change the plugs yourself..

Your Runner is 6.5 years old and runs amazing. Should you spend the money on it? Question answered by you already with the first sentence of second paragraph.

I may be wrong but I think your warranty will not be covered if your timing belt snaps or if anything else is damaged because the 90K service was not performed

The TB will not snap because he's at 90k. Toyota is very very very conservative with their TB interval. Most if not all show few if any signs of use/degradation at this mileage.

It's funny to see people that think it's a ticking time bomb the second you hit 90k.

But, why chance it? Peace of mind wins in my book or owners manual.

I'm just saying "IF" it happens to break the warranty will not cover it as the 90K service has not been done. Not saying it will, but there has been a few cases it breaks before 90K. I have 92K, so I'm in the same boat. I'm planning on doing it before 100K.

In-laws have a Camry with a recommended interval of 60K - it broke on them at 61K and some change.

Just sayin'.

Is there any reason to get your timing belt changed if nothing is wrong and you don't have a warranty? 100k

Yes, the belt stretches and can throw off the timing.

But at the end of the day, it's your engine/car. What's the saying... an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

Not to mention, when it breaks (and it will eventually), you'll be stranded wherever you are.

I just changed mine at 96k for the first time. Once I got in their I ALMOST didn't change it because the belt looked BRAND NEW. No cracks, discoloration, chipping, peeling, anything at all, looked identical to the brand new one I had on hand. Of course I had spent lots of time and money buying all of my necessary parts and dismantling everything but I'm telling you I could sell the old one...it just looks that good.

Anyways, she's running fantastically with her new belts, bearings, water pump, and coolant, glad I got it done. Especially since I'm about to start driving it 2000 extra miles a month for work...

American made w/ american parts.

The 2UZ is in a different league of engines. Particularly the Japanese variant.

Just sayin'

True enough - same manufacturer though with a recommended change interval.

Point is, no, it probably won't break at 90,000.1 - it may go 5-10-20K more. It may never break.

Just, as you know, the timing belt is "scheduled" maintenance item that will leave you stranded and you can't readily fix it on the side of the road, in the middle of nowhere. In that situation, things become a lot more expensive.

Why take the chance on it? Warranty or not?

Ya but it won't JUST leave you stranded. This is an interference engine, just like any diesel. If the timing belt breaks while the car is driving then your engine is, for all intents and purposes, ruined. Not just the cost of a TB ruined, like thousands upon thousands of dollars ruined.

Spend the cash. Change it soon. Be calm and happy.

Thanks for the clarification on the interference/non-interference....wasn't sure myself.

Timing Belt

Hello, I'm at 145k and the original timing belt, I went to replace it and it looked like new (I started to replace it on a sunday morning and needed to be to work monday morning) SO I will be doing this SOON, I agree that Toyota is being extreeeemly conservative with the 90k replacement
