Nah, you can go up to 265/75r16 with no problems. If you're going for aggressive looks with no actual off-road, keep your sidewall to passenger rated. Unfortunately that's going to limit your choices, as many at/mt tires don't offer less than load range c.
Good names to investigate for an all terrain include:
Cooper discoverer at3
Bf Goodrich at ko
General grabber at2
There's others, naturally but these come to mind.

This is the same diameter as stock is it worth going down a rim size to gain a little sidewall?

Stock wheel size on an 02 sport is 16", unless the previous owner of your truck replaced the wheels with 17". I believe the later year 4runners may have moved up to 17", but the largest stock size on a 3rd gen is 16".

Yeah, kid, I got a friend like that, I'm helping him with his build, and keeping it functional. I have a good feeling the reason he doesn't intend to off-road is that he hasn't gone yet. I figure once he gets built and I drag him out on the trail, the bug will bite him and he'll be hooked.
OP, to answer your other question, no I wouldn't go down a wheel size just for more sidewall unless I was planning on really wheeling it, and then only if I was replacing the wheels for other reasons.

Where do you go for off-road trail fun Brique? I'm not too far from you, just down in Huntsville. I can't seem to find much around here.

I haven't been much here yet, but there's a place near Chattanooga called copinger cove that's pretty cool. We also have a couple off-road parks near Nashville that I need to check out. I bought a trail map for the tn "dirt devil" recently, but I'm told it's more of a scenic drive than real off-road. Still sounds pretty cool.

Alright, cool. I just looked up that dirt devil thing and it does look pretty neat. I'm sure it would be beautiful if you time it right and go in the fall when the leaves change. There's a place down in Talladega called "Skyway Motorway" that I've been wanting to go to for a while now. It looks fun with lots of views, but nothing too crazy at the same time.
If you're ever going out to one of them and looking for someone to join, let me know. If I'm available I'm down to go. I've been a little hesitant to try any of the offroad parks here until I get my sliders(mid July hopefully), and now that I've got bigger tires that should help a little too. Everything else is stock though, performance wise.

Eh, it's not too bad. 1.5-2 hours. I don't mind driving though, I've driven farther for some of my 4Runner parts... I subscribed to the thread!
