What the F$7k Just Happened?!?

:redbrick:

Have had it too long. The skid plate bolts are stripped which is why it's not done.

It's anybody's guess whether that is oil/coolant or ATF/coolant, but either way you're looking at some major work. Start reading up on top end tear downs just in case. I hope you find some deals along the way to lessen the blow, but this one's probably going to cost you.

BTW, my guess is that you've got a milkshake on your hands. When you get a coolant/oil mix (due to a BHG) it's because coolant is being pulled into the combustion chamber on the intake stroke, past the piston rings, and mixing with oil in the crankcase. This is unusual.

Usually w/a BHG, the combustion gasses push past the HG, into the coolant passages, pressurizing the cooling system... that starts to fill the cooling system with exhaust gasses, pushing coolant out of the radiator and into the overflow.

A cracked head is a possibility, but given the rapid onset of the problem, the condition of your truck (rust/corrosion present), and the fact that you never got that B&M installed... my bet is on the milkshake.

I would also add, having had a cracked head CYL #3 last year and searching multiple threads on it, that such a large mixing of oil and coolant, to the point where it turns from green to brown is unusual.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen but I didn't see it on any of my research at the time.

Most cracked head / head gasket threads show that the coolant is burned up in the engine causing the coolant levels to go down and the engine to overheat. The fluids could mix slightly or they might not.

So this could be good news in a way,
because I would rather have a pink-milkshake failure than one that mixed oil and coolant so much that it turned 3+ liters of green coolant brown.

Maaann roughhh wish I could help...Sucks I work for Halliburton too, guess its time to look over my 4runner when I get home, wish I could throw one of the Hilux motors in my luggage to carry home with me...has me worried now! haha Keep us posted dude...best of luck!

I am 95% sure that it is oil and coolant. I have seen the pink milkshake.

The hiss was coming from the cooling trying to get into the overflow. Then I took the radiator cap off with gloves so I could move it again.
I am thinking head gasket as you said Pit and then on the list. Head gasket wouldn't be too terrible.

The only reason I am very upset is because I just towed my other car to where I am moving in PA two days ago. So now I have to tow this one, get the GF to DC for an internship, pick up my work car, and move 400 mi in the next two weeks. Whaaaaaaaaa, I know.

What are you referring to here?

Enjoy Tampa as much as possible. Play the lotto, you may get lucky.

The reason I ask about the radiator is that it does look like the pink milkshake, you just hope it collapsed there and that mess was not circulated through the engine.

The Halliburton curse, if I went into detail, would get me some unwanted intrusion by three lettered government guys.

I was sitting in the middle of the row at the airport parking. So to cool the engine I took the cap off and let it spray everywhere. And then put a gallon of water and and then drove it about 300 ft to the nearest parking spot so I could hop on a plane.

It started and drove fine for that 300 ft other than a hissing sound. Maybe that is bad.

It jut hit me today. Vacation is nocation now.

When you drove it that 300ft what was your exhaust like? That would tell a huge story. If it was white and smelt like candy your head is toast. If you didn't notice this, which it is very hard not to notice, it is most likely the tranny.

Negative on the white smoke. It started and ran fine other than a hiss. I can imagine the engine doesn't like being cooled with tranny fluid.

Really if you haven't put a tranny cooler in, you really should. It's like the ball joint thing, of it happens to you and you didn't replace it you will want to drown yourself in your own urine.

Literally same thing happened to me yesterday. I was driving down I85 south and I saw my check engine light come on. I was about to pull off on an exit (as lucky as I was that I was right next to one) and the hissing noise ensued then BAM!!! radiator hose blew off and steam poured out. All the sudden the same color liquid came pouring out of my hood and down the side of my truck. Began to overheat like crazy. Had to get it towed back to Richmond, thank the lord for AAA, and it is sitting at my go to shop for a check out on Monday (just praying I didn't crack the head, the tow truck driver seemed to think I did). Good luck to you, hope all goes well with it.

I guess misery loves company. Hopefully we both luck out with a blown tranny. Can find those for $500.

Keep us posted the more information we have the better.

Will do, only reason I think it wasn't my tranny was because that was seemingly the only thing working well on it last night right before it died on 85 north as I was trying to limp home then heard a rapid clicking noise in what appeared to be the front mid-left (from the drivers seat) of the car. If it is the tranny, just hope I can find another solid 5 speed.

I'm going out to the garage *right now* to put in the new radiator and tranny cooler that have been sitting in the closet for 6 weeks. Y'all are giving me the heebeejeebees.

Ok I have lifted and blown many of head gaskets on my high boost cars I have built. Oil and water dont look like that, it has lots of seperation, but this thread is useless without draining tranny.

If its just a head gasket that its not bad at all. If its cracked head than yea it will be costly, but a blown head gasket is not as bad as a blown tranny. Good luck.

Yes I know. I wish I could pull the dip stick. That would answer a lot of questions. But I can't until Tuesday night.

This must be the worst vacation ever ... I would hate stressing over this the whole time and not being able to do anything

Yeah it is all I can think about. But I have to act like I am having fun and enjoying.

I am too the point now that it pisses me off an is going to be a pain in the ass because I am 400 mi from home.

Since we're all taking guesses, I will say its a coolant system issue.

Stuck thermostat, loose hose, etc.

I may have missed it, but what maintenance have you done on the coolant system?

None. Flushed it a couple months ago. What coolant issue would there be where oil and water mix together?

I don't think it is mixed oil and coolant due to lack of seperation. Just dirty coolant or mixed red/green coolant.

Also from looking at your pics, is that heater shutoff valve hose connected? I can't tell on my phone.
