So my wife and I have three cars; a 2015 4Runner sr5 premium 4x2, 2011 Ford F-150 xlt 4x4, and a 2005 Honda accord. We originally bought the 4Runner for my wife who has always really wanted one and we both love it! She drives 60 miles round trip to work everyday so we decided to just use the accord for a commuter car, it has 176000 miles on it. Well now my wife has this idea of trading my truck and her accord in for a brand new accord. Doesn't sound like too bad of a deal since we would break pretty much even with the trading of both cars for the new accord. Problem is, I am having difficulty breaking away from my truck. I love the 4Runner but my truck at times has become very handy. I'm a hunter so I have a atv with a trailer so that is all I tow. And I hardly ever use 4x4. I think I used it once or twice this past season. So a 4Runner would suit me just fine, I think. What do you guys think I should do? Might be asking the wrong crowd since everyone here are 4Runner owners.
What to do? Need advice?

I personally would be worried about losing a 4x4 vehicle from the stables. Didn't TN just get walloped with snow this weekend?
This suggestion may not help but why not trade in all three and get a new 4Runner but with 4x4 AND a new Accord?
If you are certain you wouldn't need a 4x4 then it sounds like the proposed trade in for the F150 and the older Accord would make sense. Assuming you get 4Runner privileges for your hunting trips when she is out with her new Accord.
I would petition to keep the F150 in order to have a 4x4 vehicle but that's just me. I also realize that in your case the trade-in value of the high mileage Accord alone won't give you as much money as the F150 in order to defray the cost of the new Accord.

im leaning toward keeping the truck but she wants to have a good MPG car. Unfortunately the 4Runner and Tacoma cannot compete with the Accord concerning MPG. I just don't like having 3 cars. She says she doesn't want two gas guzzlers.
Yes TN just got hit last week with some snow but mainly ice. I didn't use my F150 in these conditions because I was traveling with work in Nashville which I used a company truck that had 4wd.

Don't let the truck go. 4runners are great vehicles (I have two) but there are things trucks do that 4runners can't. Unless your having issues with either vehicle, just keep them.

I agree. The new Taco look great. I have a 2012 Tacoma and a 2014 4runner Trail. Love them both. A truck is always needed.
I agree with you on the withdrawal part I traded my 2006 Dodge Ram 2wd to get my 4Runner. But I had to wife works some long hrs some times and I need to be prepared for whatever seeing I have a 2 yr old. But what gets me through the withdrawals is remembering that I was getting like 9 mpgs in the city and now people don't ask me to move things for them. I will eventually get another truck but for now I'm happy.
As for you [MENTION=119064]bcb97[/MENTION] if ur going to loss ur truck also trade the 4Runner in and get a 4x4 with her understanding that when u going hunting it's ur turn to play with the 4Runner.
Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I'm going to talk her into keeping my truck and just tell her to keep driving the 05 accord for now and we both can use the 4runner when we want to. I'll just have to get over playing musical cars in the driveway and garage with three cars. If the 4runner was 4wd, I wouldn't have a problem with getting rid of my truck. :violin:

Unload the 2015 4Runner. I presume this still has payments. Sounds like its just an extra car. Why was it even bought? Doesn't make the most financial sense unless you paid cash and are loaded.
You need your 2011 4wd Ford for towing/atv. She is going to need a car eventually to replace the Accord which is gaining over 16K miles a year. But, until that Accord dies, don't replace. Cheaper to keep it.

The economics of trading out a good running reliable vehicle because it's a "gas guzzler" typically never come close to paying out. Yes, you will spend less on gas after you buy a new vehicle but the fuel savings almost never justify the spend. When you factor interest and depreciation losses on a new vehicle it's a loser - do the math! It's an emotional response not grounded in reality....

We only owe money on the 4runner. Paid half down and financed the rest for only 3 years. She really wanted a 4Runner and the original plan was for her to drive the Accord to and from work and we both would drive the 4Runner on the weekends and on trips. But, 3 cars in the driveway is crowded.
I already have a trailer and there is no room in putting an enclosed trailer. Nice thought though.

So sell her old Accord out right, let her drive the 4runner full time because that truly is what makes the most economic sense (If you only want two vehicles on the driveway).
Or tell her if she wants she can trade in the 4Runner and the old Accord and get whatever ya'll can afford.
Tell her regardless, you're keeping your truck 'cause that's what you want to drive and you don't want to hear any more about it. She can decide what she drives and you decide what you drive. Most women ultimately are happier when their man has a pair - never confuse what a woman says she wants with what she really wants....

I like having 3 dependable vehicles, although all 3 of ours are gas guzzlers! The main thing is, if you have problems with one you simply jump into another one and it's not as big of an event to get it fixed. It frees up your options a lot.
How much room do you have around your house? I ask because your main beef seems to be playing "musical cars" in the driveway (which I agree is a PITA). Can you pour a 10x20 pad alongside a section of your current driveway to park the truck on? Might be a solution - that's what we have. I really wanted a 3 car garage, but there weren't any houses (that we liked) on the market in our price range when we bought. The extra parking pad has been a good compromise. If that's an option you could keep the truck and the 4runner, then simply get a new Accord. Best of all worlds, everybody happy!

I wish I had the room to add on to my driveway but unfortunately, I live in a neighborhood where the houses are fairly close so I would be approaching onto the neighbors yard and I doubt he would like that.
My wife and I haven't talked about it since the other day so I'm just letting things fall where they do. If I do end up selling my truck, then I will tell her if at some point I start needing a truck or 4x4 SUV/Truck more and more, I will be looking at getting something else. Good thing the 4Runners have great resale value. Getting rid of the 4Runner we have no is not an option because for one we got a great deal and two we really like this one.
