Greetings,
looking for advice on the best options for possibly replacing dated gadgets with newer gadgets.
Case in point: I have the OG iPad Air debuted in November of 2013. 16GB, Verizon enabled. I got it new as a christmas present in 2013. It's had one screen replacement already, and THE SCREEN IS CURRENTLY CRACKED. I've been using it sparingly since it fell out of the truck 2 months ago and shattered the screen as we've all seen before.
The first time I had the screen replaced in 2015, it was a local shop that charged $99. Today, same shop charges $149 for the same service. Comparably, similar providers in the area gave me quotes of $136, $159, and $185 for replacement of the screen.
Ebay tells me that the same used item in good condition with no cracked screen sells for about $185-$225.
Ebay also tells me that the same used item in similar condition with a cracked screen sells for about $165-$190
And finally, I can get a brand new in original packaging exact same item on ebay for $225+
Obviously, the cost of replacing the screen is questionable based on the value of the ipad.
I'm content with the abilities of the older ipad air. I don't need a fingerprint home button or any of other whirly-doos of a newer generation ipad.
The ONLY situation I can see myself actually going out of pocket for an "upgrade" would be to replace my current ipad in some process with a comparable ipad mini. I could see a use for a mini with a data package as a cockpit upgrade.....the full sized air is just a bit too big for my 3rd gen.
As I said, looking for opinions from folks who have been in a similar spot. I admit....it's kinda silly putting this much thought into something so minute as an ipad....but I could really care less about "the latest and greatest", so I may be over analyzing. I can tell you that the idea of spending any money to fix the cracked screen has been very quickly brushed off since the shatter two months ago as since then, I'd rather deal with the cracked screen than waste any time or resources on any solution - that's how little i care about new tech.
a) sell cracked ipad as-is on ebay, use proceeds towards comparable ipad mini*
b) repair current cracked ipad, keep it, and get over the idea of having an ipad mini in the cockpit
c) repair current cracked ipad, sell it, and replace with similar mini*
d) other
(*if I DO sell my used ipad....besides resetting to factory defaults, do I remove and keep the sim card or include it in the sale? trying to protect privacy)
